Robert’s Future

We will likely never see Luis Robert play another game in a White Sox uniform. Chris Getz and company really screwed the pooch with this whole situation. Dude should have been traded at the same time they unloaded Cease. Robert will now go the way of Moncada, with his option quietly declined during football season when no one is paying attention.

Moncada on the bench the last two or three weeks last year while making $27 million essentially was JR's version of twisted revenge ... or Jimenez disappearing ignominiously into thin air, along with Tim Anderson.

For some unknown reason, they did hold onto Yasmani Grandal until the very bitter end, though.

Sucks about Robert. No real reason to dislike the guy other than he never lived up to his potential. I guess if the Sox have no other CF options and he's not blocking anyone then there's no harm in bringing him back. If they don't, someone will sign him to a $3-5 million 1-year deal or something. But also, the man's made life changing money. He'll live a good life even if he doesn't return to the game.

I can't help but wonder, my gut reaction is Robert's option won't be picked up. The saved money will not be spent on any free agents and you could have a team payroll in the $40-$50 million  range in 2026.

This just makes no sense. They would have traded him for anything if they were just going to let him go for nothing.

Not so sure about that. I don’t think they wanted to be embarrassed about just how little they got in return for him.  Funny thing is I would have been fine with what the Giants got back for Rogers.

So they won't be embarrassed when they let him go for nothing?  Lol, is that what you are saying?

They will definitely pick up his option.  Benintendi is a more crippling contract than Robert.

Which I’ve been saying for months and was ridiculed by some for taking this stance. I mean, wasn’t it obvious to everyone else? Certainly wasn’t obvious to Getz - scary.

Won’t it be even more embarrassing not picking up the option?

This, my friend, is what I have been calling the sunk cost fallacy. Best move is to move on. If they don’t, eventually they will be forced to regardless.

If the Bader and Mullins deals were what was on the table for Robert, I thought it was great for Getz to tell them both to stick it, and to keep Robert. Builds credibility going forward, and all he lost out on was three minor league relievers? (the trade for Cedric Mullins - one of which was a converted 3B) I've got no problem with Getz being tough to take advantage of when he's in a hard spot.

I don't really care what happens with Robert. Good luck getting a team to trade for him now that they've all been vindicated by Robert being out of the year before September even rolled around.

Next year, you probably have Brooks Baldwin, Teel/Lee and Bryan Ramos (or player moved by Ramos) looking for OF innings. Maybe Robert holds the interest of casual fans? I don't think you get anything more out of the Mets, Phillies or Padres this offseason for LuBob. Maybe somebody thinks they're a CF away from competing next year?

I don't think it would be insane to not pick up the option for next year. I imagine they will, and all that will do is smoosh a couple of deserving young players into a single OF position.

It appears opposing GMs made the right decision in choosing Bader and Mullins over Robert. Both are outhitting Robert since the deadline and both are actually still available to play.

Payroll won't be quite that low, but it will be low, just the way JR likes it.

If they could opt out of Benintendi that would have been done a while ago.

Im sure they figured they could try to trade Robert again over the winter with a strong finish to the season. He is now hurt, again, and likely to not play again all year. I could definitely see them declining the option now due to this, or else they are risking paying him $20M for essentially nothing.

Its called cutting your losses, and sometimes you just need to do it.

And with him being injured Getz now has a logical reason to let him go and not necessarily have egg on his face again.

This is the team that non tendered Carlos Rodon when they actually were contending. There is no way they pick up Robert now.

Rodon wasn’t good the year they non-tendered him. Are you talking about the QO? If so, you’re bringing back enraged feelings of why they didn’t offer a QO at the time.

But it is valid. Dude put up a 5.1 WAR for them in 2021, and were so fearful of him accepting the 18.4 qualifying offer, didn't even extend one. He went on to make 31 starts for the Giants the next year, and put up a 5.2 WAR in 2022.

Meanwhile the Sox had to release Dallas Keuchle in 2022 after he posted a 7.88 ERA in 8 starts. He was making 18 million that season.

Just awesome asset management from the Sox.

Yeah, that's what I meant. They were afraid the top of a rotation starter might accept for less than they will have to pay Robert.

Wasn't a big reason being floated around as to why they didn't offer the QO was due to..... his health..

We sorted it out. They non-tendered him after 2020 when his era was over 8. Didn’t offer QO in 2021.

The season ending injury 100% percent changes things. Luis Robert is not even close to being worth a $20 million dollar option and has already proven he has little to no trade value. Decline the option and offer him a one year deal for 5 or 6 million. Let him walk and be done with it if he declines.

Oh, the egg is there, it's everywhere.  He's going to get released for zip on a day the Bears play and the only people who will notice will be on this board.  Trade him for a rosin bag at deadline and you get mocked because everyone is watching.  Release him during NFL season and nobody notices.  Gosh, Getz is so inept.

I understand the distinction, wasn't clearing it up moreso citing they have made some decisions that didn't make a lot of sense and were clearly financially based.
