Sun Times says it’s time for the Schrif to move on

Schriffen is a perfect reflection of this organization.  This includes how it hires unqualified people for top positions and how it has given Sox fans an utterly crappy product.

Unqualified? That's bulshit.  Schriff is plenty qualified especially now with two full mlb announcing  seasons under his belt.  This sounds more like BS political complaints about DEI hires but anyway, too late, Schriff will be back next year and he earned it with a lot of hard work. Beyond all that, John is a great guy and has made the broadcasts fun to watch despite the losing season. Not easy to do.

You may not like Sciambi, as I am not a fan of his delivery, but there’s no doubt he does a ton more legwork and research prior to games than Schriffen does.  He shares a ton of analytics and information that would basically make Schriffen respond with **crickets**.

Could his staff be handing him a printout with this info before every game which he uses as he sees fit? Just saying. I love statistics.

It's not.  What experience did he have before he took this job that qualified him to be a major market PBP #1 guy?

What a lame deflector.  Not sure why you are upset, you got what you wanted.  Another season of inferior broadcasts

What was Benetti's experience before the Sox job? A little bit of KBO. ESPN3. Very similar to Schriffen except Schriff did work for ABC News. They both did radio broadcasts for their college.

"Experience" is kind of a weird argument. You're either good at the job or you're not, you don't need a 30 year track record to be "good".

Mind you, while I think Schriff is actually good at being a commentator, I wish he knew more about baseball. Had actual takes beyond what he's told by producers. He's done it a couple of times this season where his 'eye' offered a little bit of insight. If he spent his free time researching baseball like Benetti obviously does, he could be really good.

It would be a shame to just fire him. McKnight isn't any better. Schriff's energy appeals to a non-boomer crowd. But it's like caulfield said, baseball fans can tell the difference between someone who knows what he's talking about and someone who doesn't. But baseball isn't rocket science, I suspect if he made an attempt to be better, he could be. Something that still sticks out to me from last season is him talking about how he wishes he had time to research the minor leagues. I think he should find the time. I listened to some semi-recent Tigers broadcast where Benetti was talking about the 'pitching lab' at his alma mater, Wake Forest...seemingly just random knowledge, but actually insightful. I think Schriff tries to be insightful about the players' personalities or whatever, but I think we would all like it to be about baseball.

He could be genuinely good at the job. But, like, management needs to light a fire under him a little bit. Contract year might do that.

I have zero interest listening to the broadcasts anymore, he is so corny and hard to listen to

Haha, I love your accusation of racism when Schriffen was literally commentating fucking SlamBall prior to the White Sox.  Do you even know WTF SlamBall is Tray?

Are you truly this naive?  Jerry is fucking cheap and so he obviously went cheap to replace a better announcer in Benetti, or am I also being racist?  Am I now anti-Semitic for calling Jerry cheap?  No, I’m not.  He IS fucking cheap.

Meanwhile, no one cares if Schriffen is a “great guy” if he sucks at his job.  Only a truly clueless Sox homer would think he is a good commentator.

Your passive aggressive hints that everyone else is racist when they disagree with you are an embarrassment to this site and humanity in general.

You play this game that everyone is out to get you and any of your awful takes when people disagree with you.  No, they aren’t.  Stop making bullshit whiny excuses because you can’t convince anyone else to agree with your ridiculous takes on everything.  That means your arguments are weak.

Tray constantly defends Jerry and thinks Schriffen is great at his job.  How can anyone take him seriously at this point?

This is either conspiracy level trolling at this point or Tray has achieved greater White Sox homer status than Hawk Harrelson.

I desperately await your “Fvk you” post…

😉

Yeah, must be that. Couldn’t possibly be a reference to someone like Getz, the poster boy of privilege.

The hot dog bit would’ve been funny if Beckham wasn’t a homophobic douche. Why is that the focus of the article? That’s the least of Schriffen’s problems. His problems are a lack of baseball knowledge and preparation. His non-baseball bits are generally good. But 90% of his job is talking about baseball and he isn’t good at it.

if they could combine Mcknights knowledge with Schriff’s personality and energy, you’d have a great announcer imo. To me this falls on his manager for not telling him he needs to beef up his ball acumen. It’s not hard.

mknight and "good announcing" is an oxymoron. emphasis on moron

and people forget that STONE likes/approves of him. i was a benetti guy, but it was obvious that steve was getting tired of his schtick.

That’s a pretty context free and disingenuous version of the reality of this situation

not sure we should be letting a guy flirting with retirement call the shots

yeah, but he's the senior guy with the guaranteed contract. And the owner loved him more than hawk.

Not even close to reality. This is from my story in November 2022 from one of six sources I spoke with:

“Jason Benetti’s deal with the Sox is up, the Sox hold the option for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He went to Fox to negotiate that deal with them after he was told to do it and then come back to the Sox and they’d work something out. Jason wanted to get the deal done with the Sox first and then go to Fox or ESPN or whoever. Turns out when he came back to the Sox and said that he needs 40 days off so he can do the Fox work he was told, ‘no, that’s not happening.’ So I don’t know what’s going to happen to him or Steve Stone.”

He didn’t “break” his contract.  His deal with the White Sox ended and he signed a better deal with the Tigers.

Whenever someone says that Benetti “broke” his contract due to his other engagements for ESPN for college football or whatever else, I always laugh.  Look at how many games Steve Stone is allowed to take off because he simply doesn’t want to travel to the west coast.  And then we get the pleasure of listening to Beckham or whatever other clown they have to throw in the booth.  What a joke.

The Sox told him to look for a new deal and then told him to leave when he got it.

And even as a Sox fan from Homewood, Illinois, Benetti learned that it doesn’t always pay to have your dream job.  The guy’s best career move was getting the hell away from cheapskate Jerry.

Shockingly, the Tigers don’t have a problem with their commentator getting more publicity by doing nationally broadcast gigs.  Jerry is a moron.
