After spending some years at an obscure state college adrift in the static of subpar hallucinogens, I was about to receive a diploma with a major in creative writing, my prospects for employment as narrow as if I’d majored in saying what animal shapes I thought I saw in the clouds. But I decided the legendary threesome was not done gathering glory, so I held onto my one and only asset, figuring it could only grow in value, and embarked on a life of thrilling menial labor often punctuated by periods of spirit-emboldening unemployment. All you need to do is pick up a newspaper and see the ever-widening transcontinental influence of Mike Colbern, CEO of Intel Computers, Guy Hoffmann, Nobel Peace Prize-winning solver of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and President Dewey “FDR on ‘Roids” Robinson to see that in this as in all of my major life decisions I have, as Topps did with this card, forecasted the future with pragmatic and sober-minded brilliance.

Luis Robert won't be on the next good White Sox team. Acuna and Pauley might be. It's basically that simple. The league just told you what Robert is worth. Holding him into the season would be insane.

Whatever. Didn't expect much

I guess Acuna is young enough where he may become useful but we could really use some more power in the lineup.

I guess this is due

I was in the minority wanting to keep him. My screensaver is Robert hitting a homer at the 78. Oh well, deep down i knew this was coming. Brooks Baldwin step on up!

The whole league knew Getz had to trade Robert, and apparently after the big splash,  knew the Sox were also broke.  Worst Poker Player, Ever.

can't wait until Ishbia launches his ass

So this was the package in which Getz  was holding out, At least he got his guy that can play second base. Again, I don’t understand picking up an option if you are just going to salary dump it before you even play another game.. The while thing was dumb. I will say, Robert not having to be the obvious star of the team might be good for him, but chances are he will still miss 40 games. The Sox were going to be bad with Robert. Now they will be a little worse, but with $20 million off the books, JR probably has already locked in a profit. Bravo.

Never thought he’d end up being a salary dump but it is what it is at this point. I’d have kept him and hoped his talent would have matched but I get it.  Robert always seemed to work hard and I wish him best in New York.

Wish they would have eaten some salary but maybe it didn’t get much? But I’d like to see them invest somewhere - but maybe they just front ran the one free agent signing?

I'm hoping with the savings of 20m we can add a middle tier SP?

No, actually, they should have extended Robert after 2023 for 20 years at $40M per. Prove me wrong.

I like your style but people saying this never prove themselves right. All in all he was an expensive flop. If he ever realizes his potential don’t look back and weep.

I think they’ll sign a starting pitcher and outfielder now.  Nothing exciting though

They had no intention of keeping him to start the season.

Exactly.  They never had any intention of paying his $22 million or any intention of eating any salary to increase the return on him.  This trade is 🤮-worthy.  Acuna is trash.  Getz held on to Robert long enough to make him a worthless trade chip.

Trying to be positive about it:

Acuna is young

Anybody got anything else?

HOW DID THIS HAPPEN A WHOLE HOUR AGO AND I AM JUST NOW FINDING OUT?!?!?!

I would be shocked if Acuna isn’t replacing Robert in CF instead.  The Sox seem to get obsessed with bad players for whatever reason.

Time for a new signature and name....or should I wear this as a proud black eye of judgement?

NBC Sports nailed this trade in one sentence.  Their later comment isn’t too exciting either.

”White Sox acquired INF/OF Luisangel Acuña and RHP Thomas Pauley from the Mets for OF Luis Robert Jr.

This doesn’t seem like a sufficient return, but the White Sox obviously didn’t want to pay Robert $20 million this year. Acuña sort of held his own as a 23-year-old in the majors last season, hitting .234/.293/.274 in 193 plate appearances. He’s intriguing defensively at several key positions, he runs very well, he has decent plate discipline and he’s not entirely absent of power. It seems like a utility profile, but given that he’s just turning 24 in March, there’s some hope for him as a regular, perhaps in center field. He’ll probably battle Derek Hill, Tristan Peters and Everson Pereira for that spot in spring training. Pauley, a 2025 12th-rounder out of Harvard, allowed one run in four innings in his pro debut last season.”

It’s hard to blame Getz. This was clearly a mandate from above. Probably part of the price for green-lighting Murakami

He’s fast.

Eh, I think unloading a huge contract to an iffy oft injured player on the downside of his talent after 2 sucky years is fine, but we did get garbage in return. It’s an expensive flyer for a cheap flyer. Hopefully they do stick Acuña in CF.

Mets are in Chicago Aug 21-23. Can't  wait for Luis to have like 3 HR 10 RBI and a GG catch just to spite us

We basically traded Michael A. Taylor for a package. Learn to be happy.

Let’s be honest — Getz turned an actual asset into diminished goods and just got bent over a table by Stearns with no lube.

It’s more likely he’s injured those games

If Getz was crazy for picking up the option then he can't also be stupid for getting a couple pieces in return for LouBob without paying LouBob any of that supposedly ridiculous money.

Anyway, Sox can now take this money and work on finding an outfielder!

Getz is to blame for not trading Robert sooner.  The Sox were never going to be competitive with Robert on the team.  He waited long enough for Robert’s value to be at its lowest and to have a $20 million dollar salary and a $2 million dollar buyout.  Getz has also been with the Sox long enough to know that the owner rarely, if ever, sends money in trades to improve the return.
