This is a way too simplistic way of looking at things. Going “all in” at the trade deadline may be foolish, but augmenting your roster with non elite prospects is something any serious GM should be doing to some extent.

And in the case of the Dodgers, they traded away a single piece as they had soured on the player and were able to get a nice return. They are also not a good example of anything when they can rock record payrolls that allow them to accumulate significant depth during the offseason.

I get that, but I also think Detmers is a bit better than bottom of the rotation. And he's young. Don't think Davis Martin was even in the majors at his age.

I think this org needs to buy some pitching because it's really pretty barren in the minors, and this guy at least has some control and some upside. There really isn't any for sure starting pitching at the major league level right now - hopefully Martin and Shultz but not close to sold on them. So, I guess, where is the pitching going to come from over the next few years?

What are significant assets in your opinion for Detmers? A fringe top 100 prospect?

Detmers will command much more than that IMO. Like a teams number 2 and 3 or 4 prospects. Something like a mid top 100 AND a fringe top 100.

That's fair enough, I'm just guessing. I wouldn't give up Bonemer for him, certainly not Bonemer and McD for example.

What reason would they have to believe Gonzalez is any better than Stott at second?

Certainly not from a defensive standpoint.

Veteran teams hardly ever break in rookies at key positions unless there’s an overwhelming reason to make a change.

Robbie Ray would be a guy I'd be interested in. Would cost very little in prospects (if anything) and be a veteran presence who does carry some upside.

I'd imagine there's a couple of guys other orgs could find interesting who might be topping out in ours. Bergolla, if he ever gets back on the field. Whatever noise last offseason that made Getz put Duncan Davitt on the 40-man might still be there. Tony DiPino and Colby Shelton are dudes. We're not going after Tarik Skubal, so guys from #8-15 could be enough to get that type that looks like a tweak away from being something, or whatnot.

Tomoyuki Sugano or Robbie Ray shouldn't really cost anything. Detmers or Jose Soriano should be the tier right behind Skubal, but Artie Moreno may think they're another Anthony Rendon away from glory, so they might be asking the Sun, the Moon and the Stars for them.

Jerry would approve this move as a cost-saving measure as he wouldn't have to pay full price for the tiny pants Ray wears.

With the lockout coming up, it's a valid question to ask if he wants to compete.

The only reason they're willing to start adding multi year contract guys in FA is the belief they will need to hit a payroll salary floor number in the next 12-24 months...

All that said, it's suddenly becoming much more interesting now with three key positional starters out for CLE. They're just not going to be able to run away from anyone, and Kwan has had one of his worst seasons so far as well.

I think yeah, that’s about the smart thinking. My concern is trading a top 3 player, or some 17 year old infinite upside Venezuelan we just signed who goes on to be a star for the Padres. Just stay in between the two worst case scenarios, and I’ll be satisfied

At the MLB.com site they had a story today on 10 players likely to be moved.

Chapman, Wacha and Ryan were listed as possibly to the White Sox but not Gray for what it's worth.

Ryan would cost them Bonemer to start with...and a couple Tier B/C guys.

The Twins would make the Sox pay a heavy heavy price to trade him to their arch rival.

I have a hard time seeing Jerry committing $14M to a 35 year old SP next year. And I’m a little afraid of the price for Wacha + $ kicked in. A patch in the boat for the next year and a 1/2 isn’t worth giving anything of value for.

Why would Jerry be afraid to commit $14M next year when we have one of the lowest payrolls in baseball?
