Tuesday at 07:03 PM1 day The hits just keep coming. Good god we can't keep these pitchers healthy for whatever reason.
Tuesday at 07:24 PM1 day I don’t think he was going to be any help this season anyways. Hopefully not a long term concern.
Tuesday at 07:30 PM1 day I can’t decide if this is good news or bad news. Never want to see a guy hurt, but it could explain the inconsistency (specifically his last outing).
Tuesday at 07:38 PM1 day Sucks but glad it happened this way rather than “he made a start on Saturday, was terrible, and now is going to miss time on the MLB IL with a shoulder impingement and accumulate service time after we started his clock and dfa'd someone else” Edited Tuesday at 08:21 PM1 day by Bob Sacamano

Tuesday at 08:26 PM1 day This should take him out of the major league rotation plans for the rest of the year. Obviously there is a non zero chance he can help sometime in August or September, but you can’t really plan around that now. Realistically, if all goes well, maybe he could factor into bullpen mix if we make the playoffs.

Tuesday at 09:39 PM1 day https://www.mlb.com/whitesox/news/hagen-smith-out-with-left-shoulder-impingement?t=mlb-top-prospectsYou wonder if this suddenly happened. Remember in his next to last start he struck out nine or ten guys and looked very good. Then Saturday he stunk the joint out. Edited Tuesday at 09:44 PM1 day by Lip Man 1

Not sure how serious the impingement is but Fegan's report - two weeks of rest before throwing and another 2 weeks before returning to games seems like it could be something relatively minor, but without having additional info or knowledge about that condition, any projection about when he might return is not useful. Getz and his team will just have to focus that much harder now to acquire pitching.

Getz and his team will just have to focus that much harder now to acquire pitching.I'm waiting on an MRI because I may have blown out a shoulder a few weeks ago. In the meantime I've checked with my doctor on different scenarios. He told me an impingement, if I understand him correctly, is something that irritates the nerves or muscle, usually something like a bone spur or chip that rubs up against it. Surgery is usually the way to heal it taking away the source of the irritation.
9 hours ago9 hr I'm sure there are many different forms of impingement, but I've got to believe that one possible outcome is a torn labrum. My understanding of an impingement is based on a hip impingement, where there is extra bone on the "shaft" that connects the head of your hip bone (the ball) to the femur. In that case, certain movements can cause that extra bone to rub up against the labrum and cause a tear.If a protocol of rest is at play, I would assume that the impingement is causing inflamed tissue similar to how @Lip Man 1 describes it. My understanding is that surgery would be required eventually, but it may be something that you'd be able to sort of re-set by letting the inflammation periodically calm down to a baseline level. Worst case, though, you could be looking at a major surgery caused by this additional bone mass in a violently-moving and critical area.Note: I am not trained in any of the above (I didn't even bother to look anything else up), so I really hope @ptatc comes back to clear this all up for us.
