I like that there definitely looks to be some talent out there. You should lock up today's selections tonight, though that should have pretty much already been done. You have all night to bargain with the remainder of the possibilities out there. I think one is our's already and now you try to grab one or two that maybe you didn't know if they would be available or they didn't get their number and now readjust.

I agree - hopefully they are working the phones and can add some interesting talent.

  • You have no clue.

  • I truly think tomorrow they have a shot at turning this into what we will look back on as one of the more special drafts in franchise history!

  • I dunno about you guys but I think it's pretty sweet to be in first place and also have the first pick in the draft.

Dylan Bowen. Get it done.

I think I'm a bit "meh" at the moment. I'll be underwhelmed if they don't come away with some high upside prep dudes tomorrow. Roch is a great pick, you can't mess that up. I don't hate Thome, just was hoping for something a bit more impactful. I love the Prosek pick a whole lot. I understand the need for Volchko in the mold of a Grant Taylor/Gabe Davis type. Segura is whatever. Not super inspiring to me. Need to see the whole picture after day 2.

I like the college pitchers more than you, and tomorrow I’m not champing at the bit for prep pitchers. But we will see what they can pull.

It is weird to now feel very confident in them developing a guy like prosek and being pumped for it. Still a bit surprised we had to put so much down for Roch

Convinced at this point that traded for #34 just so they could draft Thome during the game.

Would've been fine to draft him during the alumni home run derby, though.

Leave the Reese McGuire jokes out of this thread, please.

  1. They were proud to announce the Thome pick during the game and didn’t show any of the other picks despite the first pick.

  2. The alumni home run derby took too long to get going after the game.

  3. Keep the jokes in about the chronic masturbator who did it in his car instead of his home.

From Overslot on Teams with Money to Spend on Day 2.

Chicago White Sox

The White Sox are naturally going to have a lot of money to spend given their embarrassment of draft capital. No matter that they gave Roch Cholowsky a record-breaking ten million dollars, or snagged preps Landon Thome and Cole Prosek. They’ve got plenty left in the tank. Dominic Santarelli has been heavily linked to them, and certainly could be a target. It’s certainly been a loud draft for the team with the first overall pick, but there’s still more to come for the club who began the day with over twenty million dollars in the pool.

That isn’t true. I was at the game and they absolutely broadcast the first pick.

They both said the same thing basically. What, you want him to keep it PG in here? Who cares.

Talking in memes vs talking like a normal person still matters to a lot of people.

I meant that they showed the first pick and Thome pick but not the others.

That's really not how this works. We tell you that every year, but still you persist like it is an NBA style where slots are locked in.

yes you tell me that every year and I continue to disagree: if you pay overslot, you are giving up something beyond the pick that you are using. If the player is ranked in the same range or lower than where you draft him, and you pay above slot, it is, by definition, a reach.

If your drafting room and scouts are smarter than consensus, reaching could have a positive outcome.

Or for your example, when the employee's kid outright sucks, like Alek Thomas does, and has an attitude to boot. Somebody should have won GM of the year for sidestepping that guy.

True.
But they all need to be sidestepped, if you ask me. There were "other fish in the sea" beyond Thome's kid. Stay far away from all of the insider stuff.

Carlos Collazo loved the day one haul.

Chicago White Sox

Is it a cop out to take the team with the first overall pick and a historic bonus pool to work with? Forgive me if so, but it’s hard to dislike what the White Sox did on Day 1. Picking first overall is important, and the White Sox kept things simple, straightforward and obvious with the wire-to-wire top player in the class, UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky (chill-OW-skee, by the way).

He’s the best player in the class with an elite combination of floor, upside and proximity.

From there, the White Sox drafted a pair of prep hitters who have the talent that would have warranted going in the 20s: local Illinois product Landon Thome with their newly acquired 34th overall pick, and then Mississippi second baseman Cole Prosek—who boasts one of the most lethal hit/power combos in the prep class.

There’s a real argument that the White Sox landed three first-round talents.

The cherry on top of an impressive Day 1? Chicago then nabbed Georgia righthander Joey Volchko in the third round and Oregon State righthander Eric Segura in the fourth. Volchko’s pure pitching upside is exciting no matter where he’s drafted, so landing him in the third round feels like a rock (Roch?) solid value. And Segura was a Statcast Standouts sleeper, which predicted he might end up going on the first day of the draft.

White Sox fans should be thrilled with this opener.

It’s crazy to me they employ all these expensive professionals to work year round on the draft when they could just have an intern use consensus rankings.

After re-reading some of his quotes, I'm so fucking hype for Roch.

Dude is gonna be to the Sox as the Calebs are to the Bears and Bulls.

Listening to the Baseball America podcast and they “loved” the White Sox draft so far. They said and argument could be made their 2 and 3 picks could have also been first rounders, and their 4 and 5 picks were sneaky good too.

I think the White Sox actually did that as late as into the 90's.

Catching up on the game I missed. Brooke said Roch was in the house and in the locker room for the Braden walkoff game. How cool.

Full story and key Roch quotes in the short in the next post.

Not sure you are serious but there's a lot more to getting what you're looking for than on field performance. You invest in the player and they like to know you have their best interest at heart. They want a good atmosphere. If you listen to the Roch quotes you see how important it is..

Is Thome ceiling higher than a good Gonzalez outcome?

I was being very, very sarcastic haha

Quote from Shirley from today after the last round:

“We still have revenue left in our pool, we can continue to start attacking again tomorrow. So that extra space we created last night via the trade is going to pay off in our first ten or maybe our first twelve rounds.”

Roch and Jerry fell in love with each other long ago at the office apparently. Over! Great that the Sox were able to hide that the fix was always in, and faked a bunch of drama to media LOL.
