If taken before then, then pick someone else. But, if they can get Thome signed for pick #41 value, which is where he should have been picked anyway, that would reduce the ickiness of this situation.I just don't think this matters. All about the totality of the draft class. Doesn't matter where guys are picked. 1 hour ago, Chicago White Sox said:That makes sense. Definitely doesn’t feel like we should be tapped out yet financially. Not totally but it adds up. Cholowsky has been reported as $10.5 million. I'm guessing it's $6 million total for Thome and Prosek and another $1.5 million or so for Weingartner. Volchko is likely at least slot and Segura and Scolari are probably $500K each or so. These college players have real leverage right now with NIL. 1 hour ago, bmags said:Disappointed they needed to punt. I like Shirley as an evaluator, still think he leaves a lot to be desired in how he manages the budget. I am extremely skeptical other orgs would have been forced into 10.5 for Roch.Paying Roch Cholowsky $10.5 million isn't a Mike Shirley decision. I didn't think they'd have to go to that level but Emerson also getting $10 million at #2. Wasserman group did their jobs.
3 hours ago3 hr Just for fun, here are slot values and my projected variances for each pick:01) Cholowsky, SS (11.35M | -$0.85M)01) Thome, SS ($2.90M | +$0.00M)02) Prosek, 2B ($2.45M | +$0.45M)03) Volchko, RHP ($1.09M | +$0.41M)04) Segura, RHP ($0.75M | -$0.35M)05) Scolari, RHP ($0.55M | -$0.15M)06) Weingartner, OF ($0.41M | +$0.98M)07) Burdette, OF ($0.33M | -$0.18M)08) Jones, 3B ($0.26M | -$0.25M)09) Craytor, P ($0.22M | -$0.21M)10) Bucciero, OF ($0.20M | -$0.19M)That would be $0.34M in net savings so far. Add $1.02M for the 5% overage and you’re at $1.36M of excess pool. With the $150k allotment for any picks after the 10th, we could potentially sign a $1.5M bonus player in the 11th. Feels like something big will be coming within the hour. Edited 3 hours ago3 hr by Chicago White Sox

They should be shaving off 500k-1mil from the Thome and (potential) Contreras deals and giving that money to their father's as "employees of the team". This is no brainer stuff.

3 hours ago3 hr Somehow by trying to make the draft more interesting they've made it more frustrating.

3 hours ago3 hr Author White Sox select Kyle Casteel. Prep pitcher. Ranked 162 on Pipeline. Edited 3 hours ago3 hr by DirtySox
3 hours ago3 hr Author 205 on O-S.Kyle CasteelRHP Butler Area HS, Butler PAOne of the better movers in the class, Casteel has a definitive starting pitcher operation. Complimenting the mechanics on the mound is exceptional pitchability and command around the zone. Casteel hasn't grown into overwhelming stuff, but does have a foundation teams will gladly build upon.To date, Casteel has reached back for 95 but is more commonly 90-93 with relatively generic shape. His fastball plays up a bit thanks to above average extension and his ability to pepper all four quadrants. The changeup and slider both flash solid average upside, the latter perhaps a bit more thanks to diving shape and feel for spin.Casteel isn't fully developed yet and doesn't have the stuff to overpower hitters, but he's relatively young for the class and moves well. A player development department might believe there's low-hanging fruit to get the engine running a bit hotter.
3 hours ago3 hr Author 252 on BA.252. Kyle Casteel RHPHt: 6'4" | Wt: 205 | B-T: R-RSchool: Butler (Pa.) Area Senior HS. Committed/Drafted: West Virginia. Age At Draft: 18.4.Casteel is a projectable righthander who has made solid strides in both stuff and strike-throwing over the past year. He’s got lots of physical projection remaining with a 6-foot-4, 205-pound frame, and after topping out around 93 mph in the summer of 2025, has been up to 95 mph in 2026. He does a nice job keeping the fastball up where it’ll get whiffs, and has a chance for a solid slider or curveball with solid spin, but a slurvy in-between shape currently. Casteel will also mix in a mid-80s changeup. He’s a solid strike-thrower and has all the makings of a starter who might be throwing in the upper 90s in the near future. Casteel is committed to West Virginia.
