Keith Law has an insider piece on Tomas today: http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/keith-law/...aw_YasmaniTomas

He says that he may have more power than Abreu does but he isn't as good of a prospect as Puig or Abreu. Says he has below average bat speed, will have to play in an OF corner, and will have a low .obp. Good for 25-30 HR's annually though. He expects that he will get paid more than he should because that market is still the only one without a cap on spending.

Slider-bat speed....perhaps?

Now I really want him. Law on Abreu:

"Abreu has enormous raw power, probably a 70 or perhaps higher, on the 20-80 scale. The power is evident in BP and should translate to 25-35 homers a year in the majors. The concerns about him revolve around his bat speed and his conditioning, only one of which can be fixed or improved at this point. "

I want him too. Keep the Cubans coming.

Let him replace Viciedo.

Not yet. Gotta have patience with Viciedo, like Hawk said yesterday, some guys take a little longer to get going. Viciedo just turned 25. Plenty of time for him to turn it around.

Even when they're getting worse year-on-year? Viciedo's wRC+ for the Sox:

2010/11 (combined 219 PA): 99

2012: 98

2013: 96

2014: 85

Give him a full season before including 2014 in that trend. He looked like a completely different hitter in April, taking pitches and drawing walks. While I'm not optimistic, I'm not going to automatically write this season just because of an epically bad June. The talent is there and maybe Steverson can get him close to the hitter he was earlier this year.

I've been a Viciedo supporter on the board for a long time but he just doesn't offer enough offensively to justify him playing in the field and he really doesn't hit enough to be a primary DH. He's just not very good.

And yet we've been saying similar things about Gordon Beckham in 2011, 2012, 2013...and here we now are with about 25% of the fanbase or more wishing to keep him around.

Fwiw, Beckham's now 26 or 27, Viciedo just turned 25. There's ZERO doubt if Viciedo ends up with a 650ish OPS, compared to 750ish...that the writing will be on the wall in terms of his White Sox career, and there will be considerable justification for moving on.

That doesn't mean he doesn't end up later on becoming a Bautista/Encarnacion/Morse/Melky Cabrera/Pedro Alvarez when he's 27-30, etc. But the odds are not in his favor, either.

And for all of those examples, there are plenty of guys like Domonic Brown who were even MORE hyped...struggled...put together a career year and then failed to make adjustments to pitchers readjusting to him (which may be the case with Dayan since the middle to end of May this season).

Problem there, if it really is a problem, is Eaton and Gillaspie would be the only LH bats. (Assuming we're talking Tomas/Eaton/Garcia with Dayan at DH)

That's another reason to look at Frederich Cepeda (to balance out the line-up), if they're close to being in "win now" mode for 2015. He's a little long in the tooth, but a 2 year deal with an option would be plausible and much cheaper than Tomas.

Plus, Tomas almost means Thomas in Spanish, and we shouldn't trust those with two first names, like Ricky Bobby.

This article about the continuing downtrend in offensive production would highlight why the addition of Abreu was so significant and also why they might think twice/thrice before throwing in the towel on Viciedo.

Exactly what I was going to write. Dayan is a tease. Such herculean home runs, but he only has six of them. He's just not a good enough hitter to stick.

Viciedo's a DH playing LF. 850 OPS would make him worthwhile.

Sox are going to need an outfielder this offseason, and with the potential of Tomas or Despagine is where i would prefer the sox invest their money, with viciedo getting one more year of reps at DH and emergency outfielder.
