@Buster_ESPN: Rival executives believe that if Joe Maddon winds up with the Cubs, the Rays will investigate the issue of tampering.

What happens then? Tampering is ridiculously hard to prove anyways, but are they just going to take away a draft pick and give it to Tampa or force Chicago to give them a player or what? Hopefully it's the latter and hopefully it's Kris Bryant. :)

Jeff Torborg won 94 games in 1990 with a team with the lowest payroll in baseball. After the next season, the GM himted he should take another job. The reason TB won 90+ games several years in a row wasn' because Maddon was making out the line up card. If the Cubs have the players to be good, they will win whether it is Renteria or Maddon calling the shots.

Managers don't make 20 game differences in the record. If they did, Tampa Bay would have given him whatever he wanted.

Always been talked about around Tampa was that the front office pretty much made the lineup card based off whatever their data showed was the best matchups for that game.

maybe thats why the organization didnt feel like meeting Maddon's number in talks.

Maddon really became bigger than the team. He was on just as many billboards and promos as the players around here. He walked on water with the fans and media. He would complain if fans were booing any of the players or being negative. Well good luck going to a major market if things dont go perfectly.

He'll be missed most probably for what he does with the team from the time between the last out of a game is made and the first pitch the following night. Which is why I dont think there will be much of a drop off from Maddon to Martinez if Dave gets the job. If Martinez doesnt get it then he must be a horrible at interviewing and needs to give up on the dream of managing in MLB.

Meh. Maddon is a good manager but managers just don't have a big impact on wins and losses.

If their young talent plays to their potential, Ned Yost or Ozzie Guillen could lead them to the postseason. The main thing the Maddon hire will do is create even more buzz for their future, which was pretty high heading into the offseason. I also expect them to spend a ton this offseason, as they are huge favorites to sign Lester.

Hopefully the Dodgers continue to field an All-Star team, while the Pirates and Cardinals continue to put competitive teams out on the field.

Ha. Someone doesn't want to get charged with tampering...

Cubs' source calls Maddon report "inaccurate." No word from Cubs or Maddon's agent.

I think they don't want to compound their potential future troubles by having this news break 2 hours before game 7 of the World Series.

The arrow is definitely pointing up, but they will never ever live up to the hype even if they somehow managed to win it all once or twice.

Sources: Maddon talking to #Cubs as well as other teams. No deal in place with Cubs - yet.

Joe Maddon is talking to the #Cubs and other teams, agent Alan Nero says, but Nero and the Cubs say that no deal is done. At least not yet.
