How was Danks' velocity? That is the big question for me. If he can get that fast ball back into the low 90's he should be effective. His change up has

become a solid pitch.

Half of his change ups hang up high and get crushed though. If it's low and fading it's a great pitch, but Danks has shaky control and his lack of velocity makes it pretty easy to wait on that change and crush it when he hangs it

This seems like the kind of thing that would be worse early in the year in Arizona than later in the year.

The problem is batters can sit on his fastball outside too because he's never gonna bust anybody inside. He's always seemed like a 2 pitch guy to me. Not enough weapons at that low velocity.

Yes you can. Let's not pretend like we haven't seen this from Danks since his shoulder was operated on. At this point we are all praying that somehow he magically finds "it" and is good again. The likelihood of that is not good

Sounds like you agree. Hahn assumed all along that Danks is the 4th starter. He brought in insurance for EJ not Danks

 

 

Hahn said the Sox plan to go with Erik Johnson, along with their four returning left-handed starters.

This is exactly the problem I see too. All the same people are using the same excuses of just being spring training, but for players such as Danks there should be no "just wait and see" approach. Weren't we supposed to give him time to heal from said injury before we could accurately asses him? This team cannot afford yet another typical early season bed wetting. And if Danks is being himself by May/June and we're competing, it's time to consider reassigning hos role.

Having players peak the first couple weeks of spring training, especially pitchers, isn't exactly a great strategy. Danks is Danks. He'll be what he's been. Erik Johnson as well. Sure they may suck, but they don't have to be Cy Young candidates to do their job. There's a reason teams are hitting over .300 as a team right now even playing players who will not see the major leagues. The pitchers aren't ready, the fields are hard, the air is thin.
