  1. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Jan 27, 2010 -> 12:09 AM) I wouldn't scoff at the A's ability to compete in the West. If Sheets/Duchscherer (or just one of them) come back healthy w/ Anderson and Cahill, their rotation is legit. And a foursome of Bailey, Zeigler, Wuertz, and Devine can be lights out. They definitely need a bat, or a couple breakout seasons, but that pitching staff can be fantastic. You are far too kind, that rotation definitely has some promise but their offense makes the sox offense look potent.
  2. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 08:27 AM) Seriously, is there a cooler player in the NBA than Joakim Noah? I struggle to find someone out there who you can tell loves the game as much as he does and loves to win as much as he does. I don't think we give the organization enough credit for this draft pick. He is playing through a lot of pain, and this quote makes me giddy. ''When you get caught up in the game, you start forgetting about it,'' Noah said of the pain. ''It was pretty painful. It just feels good right now because we beat three solid teams in a row." I absolutely hated that pick at the time, I was really hoping for Yi to drop to us or if not him Spencer Hawes. Needless to say I'm happy with the way things turned out in that draft because as the team stands now Noah and Rose are the only 2 players I think should be on the 5 year plan for the Bulls. On an unrelated note it seems Amare is on the market now and it would be amazing if we could package Deng and Tyrus or Hinrich to acquire him.
  3. QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 09:02 PM) What a douche. Soxtalk is a community, to generalize it based on a few posters.. Wow. All it seems he's doing is whining as well. Why not he come here, debate a little if he finds a need to debate. To be fair there are a lot of posters here that are "know it alls" so somethings he mentioned weren't all that inaccurate, that being said I still prefer this message board to WSI overall, but it has gotten to the point where I have cut down my posting by a significant amount.
  4. QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 07:08 PM) You graduated from SIU but shunned the school for Illinois and now you wanna come back? I don't think so. I'm the President of the Soxtalk Saluki Calvary. I have final say. I just transferred to SIU this year and was a bandwagon Illini fan from their March Madness run with Deron and the gang.
  5. QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 08:17 PM) Without another power hitter, this team will be lucky to win the 79 games that they won last year. I think your way over-reacting, this team will still be competitive with the pitching staff we have, the addition of another power hitter would be imo the piece that puts us from a mid 80's win team to that in the 90's. That being said, I am also discouraged by Thome not being brought back but at same time I was not happy with the off-season that lead to the sox winning a WS too.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 09:59 AM) As a long-time fan of the graphic novel, the film was initially a bit disappointing, but successive viewings have made me like it more each time. I think they did a really good job capturing the eras of the first and second-generation heroes in particular. I never knew anything of the novel and I know the ending was changed(Knowing the novel ending I think for the better) but I loved the movie. Probably a top3 movie of the year for me.
  7. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 11:53 PM) Wasn't Navarro a pretty highly-touted Yankees' catching prospect??? If you're talking about the likes of Howell in the bullpen (pretty much their entire bullpen), Aybar, Akinori Iwamura or Fernando Perez, then I'll bite. The Royals are waiting on those three big bats in their minors, but it seems like they were always waiting on "3 big arms" in the minors the last 20 years or so. Just look at their first round draft picks from 1990 on and it makes the White Sox look like the Twins in comparison from a development standpoint. Anderson was also a highly-touted prospect. If I was the Royals I would of signed guys like Anderson or Dallas McPherson. Even trading for guys whose value have plumetted like our very own Josh Fields or another example Brandon Wood. I think they already had some pieces with Gordon, Butler, and Dejesus and a couple of good hitting prospects in Hosmer/Moustakas. Instead of spending all the needless money on Ankiel/Pods I think they'd of been better off acquiring another SP.
  8. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 10:58 AM) Kobe sure as f*** isn't one of them, so thusly your statement is ridiculous. I never said Kobe was on Jordan's level, if you read the post I was responding too it said Kobe will be the closest we ever see in our lifetime and I was saying that statement was ridiculous.
  9. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 11:32 PM) I want to be able to play AAA, AA and A+, that's 90 teams. Not really a little fact. If I can't do that, then there's no point for me. That's why I kept playing MVP 2005 for three years up until 2008. The minors in MVP baseball stunk though because the player progression was horrible in that game. Even so, if they have AAA and AA that is where most of the top prospects will be anyways.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 01:38 AM) Watched The Pianist for the first time since I watched it back when it first came out and it just utterly gets to me how we as human beings have done unspeakably horrible things to each other because of race, religion, nationality etc...the human race sucks. Sure if you just look at all the bad, there is a lot of good the human race has done too, even in that movie it shows some good in how people risk their lives to help save someone with no benefit to themselves.
  11. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 09:01 AM) Courting Conan: FX, HBO, Showtime, TNT, USA, more He should go back as a writer and save the Simpsons and SNL from years of mediocrity.
  12. For some reason watching that clip of all things is whats making me impatient waiting for baseball to start now.
  13. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 04:36 PM) Kobe is the closest thing to MJ that any of us will ever see and probably ever will. That is just a ridiculous statement, Kobe came along before Jordan even retired and you dont think another player will ever come up again that is as good? There might not be any player who lives up to Jordan in the eyes of everyone who saw him in the 90's but there will be a few who might come close to being as good or even better.
  14. Well I'm officially off the Illini bandwagon, I guess I should switch my alliegance to my school's team, at least at SIU are football team is competitive.
  15. Retherford would definitely be a great player to have on the major league team if he can develop as a catcher. It would pretty much give us an extra roster spot since he could play the middle infield too.
  16. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 12:38 PM) Jenks - closer Thornton - set up Pena - 7th Linebrink - 7th Putz - 6th Williams - loogy Nunez - long relief Assuming Putz is healthy enough to make the opening roster I don't think Nunez has any real chance at being in the bullpen. Id imagine it goes to Sanchez or Dolsi.
  17. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jan 22, 2010 -> 09:10 AM) No, Brock/Mir II wasnt close at all. Mir's face looked like hamburger after the fight, he was resembling the elephant man with how lopsided his face was when he started swelling If I remember right Mir did have one really good kick or punch to Brocks face that for a second or two had him dazed but it also led to Mir being taken down which lead to the end of the fight as well. Carwin will be a big test for Mir though, its the one guy in the UFC who is as big as Brock even though he isnt near the athlete, if Mir looks as dominant as he did vs Kongo I'll be looking forward to a 2nd rematch.
  18. QUOTE (The Critic @ Jan 21, 2010 -> 08:02 AM) In theory this is true, but I'd be more confident in Huet if he had ever won a playoff series before. Although Niemi hasn't either, so that point is probably moot. The bigger point to all of this is, I don't think the Hawks brass is looking to move Huet, and even if they were, the takers are few and far between. They'd have to make a second major deal to acquire an upper-level goalie anyway. If you can't get an elite goalie from anyone, then you're just trading Huet for another question mark, and what's the point of that? Well I think Niemi would be the starter than and your trading Huet to allow the hawks to resign Sharp, Versteeg, etc. I think its evident that Niemi is at least a lateral move from Huet so the hawks aren't losing anything by getting rid of him.
  19. Yeah Im still failing to see what is holding the white sox back from signing Thome. If Ozzie wants to rotate the DH spot more he can still do that by sitting Thome vs lefties. It would make the lineup much better, be relatively cheap signing, and bringing back a fan favorite....
  20. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jan 20, 2010 -> 02:53 PM) Also I have noticed young people use the term "that's gay" to mean "that's stupid", which is really offensive to the G&LC... I'm not gay by the way That expression is not unique to kids.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 19, 2010 -> 09:35 AM) One other comment on the Cubs here...after all of the Bradley escapades last year, it seems like the Cubs have totally forgotten the reasons why they signed him in the first place. Their 2007-2008 lineup was lacking 2 things: OBP and power from the LH side. Bradley blew up and provided neither of those at a high cost. Their solutions to that issue for this year are seemingly; Carlos Silva and Jermaine Dye. Yeah, that'll do. He still had a .378 OBP which is pretty good considering his average, his career OBP is .371 so cant say he didnt provide that.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jan 18, 2010 -> 08:17 PM) I can't believe noone (that I know of) mentioned Hayden Panettiere. I think people are trying to choose girls that arent so obvious.
  23. This might might make me sound bad but wow was that a waste of a 2nd rounder, definitely unexpected though.
  24. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jan 16, 2010 -> 01:10 PM) Time for Illinois to come out swinging and make a statement. Hopefully at worst they lose a tight, competitive game. With a win it makes them true contenders to win the division despite how frustrating the season has been so far. I think they lose pretty handily though...
  25. Should we bring in Mike Sherman so we can have former head coaches of every NFC North team?
