  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 04:43 PM) Why not? $8 million to lock him up for 3+ years would not be a bad gamble after the year he threw this year. As much as I believe that Humber could stick around as at least a decent starter, Santos had two seasons of performing well. I don't want to commit to Humber after just one season that may end up being a fluke.
  2. I just finished season 1 of Mad Men, and I'm gonna try to knock out season 2 this weekend. I have to say, I don't get all of the hype so far. It's pretty good and definitely watchable, but I dunno.
  3. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 03:01 PM) The 2011 White Sox were characterized by an extraordinary amount of underachievement. Tony LaRussa, like him or not, is but a handful of wins away from being the second winningest manager in the history of the game. That means he has overseen a whole lot of achieving throughout his managerial career. Now how much of that achieving can be directly attributed to him and his managerial style can obviously be debated, but his record of players coming through for him stands on its own. And I can't help but wonder, what with our more noteable underachievers seemingly tethered to this team for the next few years, if it makes more sense to bring in a guy like LaRussa with his record of achievement to try our best to get something out of these guys. Or are we really comfortable just handing this mess over to someone with no managerial experience whatsoever and hoping for the best. This is not meant to be a slam on Alomar or Martinez, who both profile as effective future managers in this game. I'm just coming at this with what might be best for our particular roster of players. (And as for LaRussa purportedly being an ass, I could care less. I wouldn't have to deal with him!) Damn, I just went and looked up the two ahead of him. John McGraw was the manager of a single team for 30 years, and Connie Mack for 50. That almost sounds fake.
  4. QUOTE (Wedge @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 12:06 PM) How about this: LaRussa Pros Experienced manager (I count 34 seasons) Won two world series titles with two different teams Won three NL pennants Won two AL pennants Cons Everybody thinks he's a giant asshole He wears his sunglasses at night I laughed out loud.
  5. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 11:20 AM) Nobody really does, they are all guesses based on history and coaching tree. Honestly I am happy that there arent really any crappy candidates being forced on us at this point because they are cheap. Joey Cora would rank below all of the ones I have heard so far and I always thought he was the heir apparent. FWIW, Davey Martinez has a hitting/bench coach history and doesnt really do much with pitching. We just happen to have a pitching coach already in place and rumors are swirling that Baines may be in line for the next hitting coach position. I wasn't a big fan of Baines as a player, but I actually think he'd make a fine hitting coach. A guy that played forever has to have some insight on how to adjust one's swing.
  6. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 02:41 PM) Appreciate the kind words Milkman. No problem. I'm sure most actually agree.
  7. I like it. Even if we tank it, his being locked up for so long cheaply will net us something nice.
  8. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 11:12 AM) Frank Reynolds' busted up face had me rolling the whole time. I wish they would have incorporated a scene towards the end where his nose started uncontrollably blleding while he was emceeing on stage. We caught Whitney last night. Painful. Reminded me of the Penguin for some reason.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 07:45 AM) Guillen puts the ass into class. I take the "the" out of "psychotherapist".
  10. I believe they could hire a manager at any time, as long as that guy isn't in the postseason at the moment.
  11. I think people are expecting too much out of Axelrod, Lindsay, Santiago, Marinez, Stewart, and Martinez. Seriously, some of those guys are complete crap right now.
  12. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 10:23 PM) C'mon Marty, I'd miss you too much!!! You and your comrade-in-arms, VictoryMC. Once upon a time, there was a poster at chisox.com named Ncorgbl. You aren't even close to him as a poster in terms of daftness and tin-foiled theories. Keep it up. Although I disagree with him a lot, Marty gets an unfair reputation here. And he's definitely no VictoryMC. That's an insult. Wow, I actually remember Ncorgbl. Just awful.
  13. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 05:10 PM) CF, this is really some of your best work. You're making us all proud. Without a doubt.
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 30, 2011 -> 12:11 AM) The guy is 52. He is YOUNG by baseball standards. THis would be a great swap; Oz for Tito. Tito will win 1-2 WS title with the Sox and be a Hall of Famer! Sox are gonna blow this and it is UNACCEPTABLE It must suck for the rest of baseball to know that so many World Series are already locked up in the next few years between Guillen and Francona.
  15. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 08:21 PM) Alomar may prove to be a better manager than Martinez none of us know. What we do know is that Alomar would be the comfortable pick for this organization. I think they need something more than "comfortable" at this point in time even if that comes with more risk. Very much agreed.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 09:20 PM) Go Aberdeen! Great reference, haha.
  17. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 08:08 PM) Cmon man, it's no good to put out crazy predictions where no one will remember it if you're wrong. Verlander will throw one no hitter and give up 12 runs in his other outing! Well find out that he's pine tarring the ball too. See? I demand consequences!! Sorry, seemed more like you were just being a jag. I dunno, I'll change my avatar for 3 minutes
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 07:54 PM) So, if somehow you're right you get to brag, what happens if you're wrong? What the f*** is your problem? I'm just throwing a fun prediction out there.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 07:56 PM) No one is taking that money on. Not for rios + Dunn. I never said anything about Boston refusing to pay anything.
  20. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 07:35 PM) There's a huge difference in experience, neither has been a manager obviously but one of them was a bench coach for 4 years on a team that won 2 division titles, a Wild Card and a Pennant. The other has 2 years experience as a first base coach in the city of Cleveland and 2 years as a catching instructor with the Mets before that. I have nothing against Sandy, I don't think he'd be reserved at all, he could be a fine manager and if he gets the job I won't be upset but the prospects of Dave Martinez just excite me significantly more. It mostely has to do with my love of Joe Maddon, that guy is all kinds of special. Perfectly put.
  21. I'm sure that Crawford will come back to normal, at least closer to his norm. It might not be in Boston, though.
  22. I'm going to make an absurd prediction and say that the Phillies' rotation bombs this series.
  23. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 29, 2011 -> 07:25 PM) im not gonna lie, i think Detroit is a darkhorse here, their offense has really come alive and their pitching can carry them. If they get past this series and can pitch Verlander multiple times in a series, they could really start rolling I agree. I actually wouldn't have a problem with them winning it all, either.
  24. Who cares anymore. New season coming up. Let's just drop all of it.
