Not sure if Raines' off the field issues during his prime and then slight dropoff in performance also didn't create an imperfect storm for him.

Hall of Fame elects Johnson, Martinez, Biggio, Smoltz
Pants Rowland replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (flavum @ Jan 6, 2015 -> 05:10 PM) For some reason, this game is memorable to me. http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SE...199406250.shtml McDowell was coming off a Cy season, but not doing great at this point. A classic pitcher's duel. What is amazing is to see the monster numbers Thomas was showing at near midseason but went 0-4 with 3 Ks and a GIDP. Shows you how awesome Johnson was to take down a hitter in a season long zone like that. -
Sox agree with George Kottaras on a minor league deal
Pants Rowland replied to Heads22's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I was hoping for Markakis but will settle for Kottaras. Can't wait for Greek Heritage night. Moustakas can suck it. -
To think I believed I could quit you.

Funny thing I saw in this article - Bevington...allowed Albert Belle to have a traveling entourage but then kicked Ozzie Guillen's kids out of the clubhouse. Maybe he wasn't ALL bad.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 1, 2014 -> 10:59 AM) No thanks. Hitting still counts. Its something I will tell stat people a million times over. The ability to actually get hits, matters. Again, Butler had a poor year, but horrid is a stretch and I think when you look over his longer span, you'll see a guy that was very productive and is a flat out good hitter. Great, no, but good, yes, and you know what, I'm sick of how many BAD hitters we've had. Adam Dunn made me sick. This^ And I totally agree with you about the possibility of Beane disrupting the clubhouse chemistry with all of his trades. The most talented team in baseball does not always win it all. Beane took a page out of the Kenny Williams playbook this year in trying to go for broke with a bunch of big trades and the A's had a different vibe from that point on in the season.

It's about that time of the year again...

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Sep 24, 2014 -> 10:26 AM) Yeah, and Sale shuts out DET but we lose 1-0 in extras. I'd prefer to beat Detroit and then let KC walk all over us. Make Detroit play the one-game WC rather than KC. -

I have given up on the Sox doing much to improve their draft position over the next 6 days. At this point, I just want them to break Detroit's hearts. -
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 18, 2014 -> 09:14 AM) It is easier to find AB and hit totals for individuals in newpapers and box scores than plate appearances. I don't think anyone is disagreeing OPB not being important. But is is funny how offense has dropped. Jim Thome, took a lot of grief around here. He was very streaky and station to station, and was on the team when some of this board became anti home run. But his first 2 years with the Sox would actually lead the league on OBP this season. His 3rd season would be top 25 and his last top 20, and that is with what would be maybe top 5 HR totals. I don't think it is all steroids. I have said before, I think Bud deadened the ball a little to give the appearance his steroid policy is working. I think pitching is becoming even more specialized, which makes it harder to hit. The White Sox have played 5 nine inning games this season that took over 4 hours to finish. A lot of that is pitching changes, trips to the mound, batters taking their time, etc. They have to fix it. Generations attention spans are shrinking. Most 4 hour games on a Tuesday night suck, One thing I think people might be underestimating is the banning of amphetamines along with other controlled substances. They were an acceptaed part of the game for a long time and really helped keep player energy levels to handle the grind of a 162 game season. I personally think along with the ban on greenies should have been a return to the 154 game season. Take those remaining 8 days to: (i) start the season in April, (ii) give 4 more off days later in the season, and (iii) get the wildcard playin game and start of divisional playoffs going a bit earlier. Right now the pitchers have experienced a huge competitive advantage over hitters that are in the field every game. The grind has to be a lot tougher on them than even a bullpen pitcher.

7/23 Royals @ White Sox 1:10 CT
Pants Rowland replied to GGajewski18's topic in 2014 Season in Review
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 23, 2014 -> 02:50 PM) I meant for today. Didn't think there was a deadline but could be wrong. Just walk up. I have done before with kids and they let them in free that late in the game. Anything to sell concessions at that point makes sense for them. -
QUOTE (robinventura23 @ Jun 18, 2014 -> 10:53 AM) Here's to a quick 2-game sweep. Adam Eaton CF, Gordon Beckham 2B, Conor Gillaspie 3B, Jose Abreu 1B, Adam Dunn DH, Alexei Ramirez SS, Dayan Viciedo RF, Alejandro De Aza LF, Tyler Flowers C, (Chris Sale P) Any word on whether this tempest coming through will impact the game today?

White Sox Announce Latest Ticket Promotion
Pants Rowland replied to Donny Lucy's Avocado Farm's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Jun 9, 2014 -> 02:00 PM) 6/9/2014 3:00 P.M. ET White Sox Announce Latest Ticket Promotion Inspired by the club's recent success with the "K-Zone" promotion, the White Sox today have announced a new in-game fan experience and a specially priced ticket package to commemorate Robin Ventura's managerial prowess. In addition to exclusive seating options, the new promotion includes a unique, ground-breaking fan experience that provides the fan one challenge flag that can be thrown once per game giving an opportunity to overrule Robin Ventura's on-field decisions. Sox Draft Carlos Rodon> Draft Day Discussion Thread
Pants Rowland replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in FutureSox Board
QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jun 6, 2014 -> 01:27 PM) Stop trying to kid yourself. If we sign Rodon and his bullying, we are DONE as a franchise. THIS.TEAM.IS.DEAD! -
QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Apr 16, 2014 -> 11:25 AM) You know, there's a lot of talent on this club. The veterans are starting to play back to form, and the rookies are developing faster than I thought. There's two or three potential all-stars in there. I think wer're a contender right now. All we need is something to bring it alllll together.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Apr 11, 2014 -> 12:22 PM) Outfield seats for tonight are $10 and $12 using the code UNIV. via whitesox.com?

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Mar 21, 2014 -> 04:07 PM) You sure about this? I thought you could opt to not purchase playoff tickets. I thought the only time that happened is if you asked for your money back instead of keeping it in your Sox account. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think we paid for 2012 postseason tickets (lol) and still improved our seats. I believe you are correct. On another note, I also split seats with a handful of people (two seats right behind the Scout Seats). Basically 8 shares of 10 games a piece. Seats are selected via a snake draft just before the season starts. We sometimes have someone flake out at the beginning of the season over whether they want to reup or not. I can keep you in mind if you are interested in trying it on a partial basis. I find 10 games is plenty for me. PM me and I will keep it archived for next year if you are interested. Thanks.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 31, 2014 -> 10:13 AM) Is his ringtone Minnie the Moocher? Had the opportunity to meet Minnie last year. My kid played in a fall league up in Horner Park and Minnie is buddies with some folks in the league. They paraded him from field to field and stopped the games between innings so he could say hi and give some major league pep talk. He rambled on and on and was difficult to hear. Told the parents not to beat their kids (I am not joking) and repeated several times that he is one of only 7 people in history to have 4,000 hits or more in his combined career. I am not sure how far back he went to compile his stats, but he just kind of struck me as a self promoting jerk. I was reticent to mention it to anyone since he is such an icon, but my friend said he met him at a bar once and got a lot of the same. I still think he should be in the hall of fame, though.

QUOTE (Frank_Thomas35 @ Jan 21, 2014 -> 06:50 PM) I agree I really enjoy listening to him talk. It's kinda a breath of fresh air from the KW days. I also believe, Hahn thinks we have a legitiment shot at Tanaka. Couldn't agree more regarding listening to Hahn speak. KW drove me nuts with his smirks and ridiculously measured responses. It was amazing how many words he could cram into one sentence that conveyed so little (and fairly useless) information. His statements were frequently so loaded to make everyone think he was working on something ridiculously special and revolutionary.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 19, 2013 -> 03:07 PM) Now, pay more attention and increase the number of infield shifts you use, and we'll really be cooking with peanut oil. Funny you mention this. As soon as I read the original post, it got me thinking of that article about the Pirates employing a strategy on their staff of learning/throwing the 2 seam fastball and then employing the most shifts in MLB aside from one or two teams. I would love to see the Sox jumping into the 21st century of pitching to contact and inducing more ground balls. It may help keep pitch counts lower and even improve defense and the fielders will be ready at all times and not get caught back on their heels.

Hahn may have bigger plans for Eaton and Elmore
Pants Rowland replied to Lillian's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Did I miss a headline where the Sox acquired this Elmore guy? -
This notion is so ridiculous. If you are negotiating with an idiot, sure the idiot may say, "you already have those two guys who are really good, you should just give me the other one for nothing." But, if you are MLB GM and have a surplus of starting pitching, you are dealing from an area of strength and only that individual's performance and statistics are what matter. Any GM who tries to argue otherwise is simply playing games because he wants the best deal possible.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Nov 17, 2013 -> 03:56 AM) Guy was a class act. My Dad and I would meet with him every year and talk for at least 30 minutes after a game while he was on the road playing the Halo's. It was common to have such encounters for all 3 or 4 games during a series. Great guy. I heard he was a kind of a curmudgeon as a teammate, though.

Tigers Name Brad Ausmus New Manager
Pants Rowland replied to GGajewski18's topic in The Diamond Club
Wonder if this is a message that the conventional old school way of thinking in baseball is very quickly being scrapped.
