No, but you could always use the old fashioned way of calling whomever you're trying to talk to.

Nice video. What's crazy is that meteor is probably the size of a car and it still lit up the night sky.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 01:48 PM) The Royals designated Tyler Lumsden for assignment I was PISSED when the Sox traded him. Odd how Cortes is the name that may come back to haunt us.

QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 01:57 PM) In all likelihood, we're getting a first round pick for Cabrera. On the other end, I don't think KW has much interest in having 2 first round picks and having to deal with those money issues. I would understand a money issue if, say, we have two first rounders and two 1st round supplemental picks, but we'll probably end up with two selections in the Top 50. We shouldn't be signing someone slated to be in the first round with one pick and then going cheap on the other. Teams with good farm systems don't do that unless that second, cheap player has been identified by reputable scouts. And at this point I don't trust our scouts.

If Williams plans on trading players with the obvious intent of unloading salary, I hope he has enough sense not to sit around for several months waiting for everything to unfold on the free agent and trade market. Can you imagine the outrage if he did nothing after trading Dye/Vazquez/whomever else for Swisher like packages? I don't think he would pursue people on the FA market more than put together a package for a player such as Beltran, where he would be willing to take on the remainder of the contract. Other teams use their finances (famously the Cubs) to lessen the talent they have to give up, if we're unloading a huge amount of salary that's a good position to find ourselves in.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 11:21 AM) So is Viciedo our Liriano Flash? Haha. I've really lost all my talking points on Soxtalk. Liriano isn't even Liriano, we've recognized problems within the minor league system (Wilder, poor drafting philosophy), and if this signing is any indication we hold a significant advantage over other major league clubs in atleast one Latin American country. I'm sure I'll find something else to annoy everyone with.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 21, 2008 -> 07:17 AM) Where's Flash? He's always complained about our scouting in Latin America. We're getting Cuba's best players. Yeah, I have complained for years about our lack of success in scouting and developing Latin American talent. I believe with the Dave Wilder fiasco and lack of success in developing even relievers/4th OFs those complaints were justified. With this signing, I don't look at it any differently than a draft pick. I love the article posted earlier questioning Viciedo's weight gain. Have these scouts seen Brett Wallace lately? They call him the Walrus for a reason. If anything, the strength and conditioning coaches available to the White Sox organization should help him get into shape. As I'm sure St Louis will do with the disgusting fatbody Wallace. Felix Hernandez grew up idolizing Freddy Garcia, and it certaintly helped Seattle (even if only a little) in signing him. If young Cubans are growing up watching their countries best talent playing for the White Sox, you hope that one day when a once-in-a-generation talent comes along we'll have an edge. Sure, money will ultimately dictate a player's destination more than which team they root for, but I'd like to believe we're doing a lot to create good will among Cuban baseball players. I actually believe Fidel Castro is helping us. If Cuba wasn't a socialist state every major league ballclub would have already set up training academies for youth players. There's the obvious disadvantage here that, in players like Dayan Vicideo, he would have alreay been signed as a 16 year old. With how everything is run in Cuba they can develop as players before their attempts at defecting into America. Everyone has an opportunity to sign them, with atleast a little more certainty in your investment than a raw teenager who can hit the ball 400ft.

Tonight was the season finale of South Park. It has been, undoutedly, the WORST season since the series has started. Last season is a close second. This show is rapidly decreasing in quality.

Bjork?! hahahaha. Ridiculous.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 11:20 PM) I actually live in the apartment complex that was built there. Haha, that's awesome. Looks nice from the frontal view available on wikipedia. Although I'm guessing those are for the $1925/month "Capotes." Your ass is probably in one of those "Austen Lofts"

QUOTE (shipps @ Nov 18, 2008 -> 09:06 AM) Now that you bring it up,me and friend were talking about how much we miss the days when we would go to the mom and pop video rental place. There was a anticipation before you got there because you never knew what movie you would be able to get.Sometimes you wouldnt be able to get anything good but sometimes you would hit the jackpot and get 5 movies that just came out and it would be like striking gold.Nowadays I get everything so easy through Netflix or Blockbuster has like 100 copies of every piece of s*** movie so the convienence has taken the fun out of the experience. I've thought about this many times. I'm 23 and grew up through the transition from mom-and-pop video stores to a monopoly of Hollywood Video/Blockbuster/Netflix. Before my family moved to Palos we lived off 63rd and Lawndale in Chicago. Within half a mile of where we lived there were six family owned video stores. One of my earliest memories is riding with my brother to every single video store looking for Super Mario Brothers 3 on NES, and when we found one, kept it for a good two months because we continued renting it over and over. Of course, none are around today. And two of the video stores were typical of past businesses in Chicago where someone lived above the actual store. Definitely won't find those around here, anymore. To address the actual thread, I recommend everyone here rent "Once Were Warriors" if it's available at your store. It's the best movie you've never seen. Another is "Session 9" if you're into horror movies. Most video stores should have this title.

I wanted Jenks traded after 2007. Although, to be fair, I had absolutely no hope for the 2008 White Sox and thought they should have attempted a rebuilding project. And because there weren't many legitimate trading chips, Jenks would have been one of my first options to dangle in front of teams. It's not even that I have faith his production will be replaced. Although I'm sure one of Thornton or Poreda would atleast be servicable. Even the worst closers have save conversation rates over 70%. I just care more about the 8 innings leading up to the 9th than the 9th itself, and if Jenks somehow provides us with an adequate major leaguer (or prospect) I wouldn't think twice about him leaving. I've never been emotionally attached to ballplayers, anyways.

Baseball America White Sox Top 10 Prospects
Flash Tizzle replied to Fantl916's topic in FutureSox Board
It's encouraging to read of Beckham's success. I hope people realize that it's our terrible 2007 (and Cincinnati selecting Alonso) that made this possible. In fact, myself and many others here were upset they didn't lose MORE games in 2007. Every victory after midseason was a useless victory in my mind. Our system was (well, still is) one of the worst in the majors and any additional boost to our chances of selecting a talented prospect was worth the embarrassment of potentially losing 100 games. I know the "I NEVER WANT THE SOX TO LOSE" fanboys didn't think so, but their kind is unable to look into the future. Entering last summer the White Sox desperately needed their high selection to be successful. So far, it looks good. This isn't even including the numerous other draftees who have shown promise in their first professional seasons. Sure, it's always a combination of luck (ie, players falling past their projected position) and the ability of an organization to identify the right talent. It's just easier for these forces to come together at 8th overall opposed to the 15-25 range we usually found ourselves in. Yes, Beckham hasn't proven himself; but atleast there's someone available from within that will provide one less question mark either midseaon 2009 or entering 2010. -
I'll have to catch up on this show with OnDemand. Another series I've watched within the last several days is Crash, available on Starz. I've really enjoyed it. Every storyline is entertaining (aside from the immigrant attempting to enter the United States, since they haven't developed his character). One issue with the series is the numerous WTF moments involving Dennis Hopper characters and The Doctor, undoubtedly due to both inhaling drugs.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 15, 2008 -> 09:06 PM) You ever actually have it? It's delicious. EDIT: I just heard that it's called rooster sauce. You've clearly had it and know it's the greatest thing ever. Hey little girl is your daddy home, did he go and leave you all alone? I got a bad desire. Oooh ooh ooh I'm on fire. Just found a third Springsteen song I like. Reminds me of INXS' song Mediate.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Nov 15, 2008 -> 04:44 PM) Quantum Of Solace was enjoyable. I'm not a Bond fan, but the movie kept me interested throughout. What's more interesting to me were some of the previews. There's a movie coming out called 2012, which is about the end of the world theory. It'll probably be the same as every other movie in that genre, but they always interest me. And I really want to see Valkyrie. That's the one about the assassination plot against Hitler by German army officers. Those two previews caused me to do a considerable amount of Wikipedia research. Here's the trailer. Interesting choice of music. It must be one hell of a disaster to cause 15,000+ ft waves, enough to compeltely cover mountains in what I'm guessing is Tibet.

QUOTE (chunk23 @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 07:27 PM) I've started to calm down about this trade. What I'm seeing it as is very similar to the Carlos Lee trade. We may have gotten some useful parts out of it, which I think we did, but more importantly with Crede, Uribe and Swish gone KW has a lot more room for FA. I think you can expect the Cuban kid, another INF and an SP through FA. We'll probably still trade for Tavares though. For any trade to be compared to the Carlos Lee deal proves it was terrible. I wouldn't expect a starting pitcher through FA, nor would I want one. We're better off holding on Vazquez and plugging Richard into the lineup. You're going to be disappointed if you believe all the money from Crede/Uribe/Swishers departure will be used for FA. Does anyone know how much our payroll is increasing over last season? A significant portion of that money may go towards the raises of players currently on the ballclub.
-
This is one step in Williams Guillen proofing his lineup. If Swisher remained here Guillen was going continue plugging him in CF; regardless of how he fared defensively. Find a CF for CF, not some retread OF who is past his prime or a AAAA OF who's only asset is speed -- whenever it is he gets on base.
-
I've never liked Swisher, anyways. His clubhouse antics coupled with limited offensive production made him irrelevant in my mind. I know in the chat we collectively believed he was off some performance enhancing drug from last season to this one. And yes, I know there was an article posted several weeks ago suggesting Swisher was ridiculously unlucky when his BABIP, among other statistics which escape me, were taken into consideration. Too bad we couldn't sell the Yankees on this. For us to trade him now, for basically nothing of value, really says alot. I'm sure his attitude was one issue, as others have discussed in this thread. But when you consider his meager salary over the duration of the contract, and the looming FA of our slow footed trio of Konerko/Thome/Dye, I'm surprised we couldn't give Swisher another season. There's no question this package is terrible, though. I'd probably be more upset if I didn't dislike Swisher so much.

I honestly had no idea prior to viewing this special that there were additional victims outside of Jonestown, in Georgetown, when a mother heard a radio transmission sent from the camp and murdered several of her children with a knife, before herself and her oldest daugher killed themselves. Also, a bit off topic but similar on the discussion of terrible acts, while browsing through information on Jonestown there was a link I followed that had information about the Tylenol murders. I had previously been unware that it occured around suburban Chicago. Just reading through the story made me never want to pick up an Extra Strength Tylenol again.

QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 9, 2008 -> 09:19 PM) Anyone watching this? No, but I'll check it out later. It's on MSNBC for anything else interested. It's an interesting story, though. Many people associate Jonestown with the images of the helicopter flying over the mass suicide/murder, but the image that comes to my mind is when Jim Jones sent armed groups to kill reporters from NBC as they were leaving the airport. Very unsettling video.

QUOTE (DukeNukeEm @ Nov 9, 2008 -> 01:09 PM) Unless you're an idiot who believes Putin is just a madman trying to bring back the USSR superpower status, it was the only thing reasonable. Putin does come across as exactly that, though. If I was to judge on appearance alone, which I do all the time, he fits the role of a Russian leader. He has that look in his eyes that he can have you killed without hesitation. Also, isn't he amending a portion of their constitution to come back into power?

QUOTE (Soxy @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 11:16 AM) I think they're also going to have to do something about the rapidly rising cost of higher education. Wait, doesn't everyone have their parents pay for their education?

Tonight's episode was a pile of suck. Not even Bob Dylan could defend it. The entire colonial time flashback seems more of the stunt a show in its 6th/7th season does when it's out of ideas. Hopefully we're not going to experience a clip show anytime soon.

The brief career of a New England Pats cheerleader
Flash Tizzle replied to juddling's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Cmon. That's all it takes to ruin this girl's dreams? Her dismissal from the team made even more news than the act itself. She's a nameless face on the sideline, afterall. I'd atleast put her through sensitivity training for PR purposes before removing her.
