AAP: Nevin Griffith
QUOTE (DBAHO @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 01:00 PM) That's very disappointing for Nevin. I remember most around here were very happy for us to pick him up in the draft. I guess that Gomez character from Hardball Times was correct in labeling him an injury waiting to happen following his selection. I was ecstatic when the Sox selected him. Even now I don't feel it was a mistake. Griffith represented a raw pitcher with a high ceiling, and at the time (a little less now) we were starving for prospects with potential. It's not as if we had a history of success in the first round, yet alone the second, to continue signing low impact/cheap players. I'd sign a Nevin Griffith clone in the second round every damn year rather than a Matt Long/Donald Lucy type, where they'll remain healthy but never be anything more than a minor league roster filler.

Video Game Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 02:40 AM) What games do you want? Donkey Kong64 Banjo Kazooie Banjo Tooie Conkers Bad Fur Day Perfect Dark Excitebike 64 WWF No Mercy Paper Mario Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Diddy Kong Racing Castlevania Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness It would seem that the most difficult to find (for a reasonable price, atleast) are DK64, Conker and Paper Mario. If I can pick up atleast three from the local swap o rama I'll be happy. I just hope the bastards aren't charging $30+ for some of these games. I'm really pissed at myself because I remember a time several years ago I went to Gamestop and they had all these N64 games for $15 and under, and now, I'm lucky if I can find them anywhere.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 01:29 AM) Swap O Rama owns. I'm probably going to swing by there before I go back to school. I was down at the flea market near Maxwell Street on Sunday with my dad (he goes there for cheap, stolen tools) and found Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem Zero Hour for $10 combined. It re energized my appreciation for n64. The links you guys listed are good. If I can't find any of the games I want (which are basically all platformers, aside from WWF No Mercy) I'll probably order online.

Films Thread
QUOTE (TheBlackSox8 @ Dec 16, 2008 -> 01:29 AM) The new fad soon to come(has already started actually, but not well) is the video game to movie. I think it's going to get better, maybe bigger than it has. In the same sense as past comic book movies, there had been a need to treat the films as a live-action video game; where you're supposed to be mindlessly entertained more than appreciate the actual storyline. I honestly believe, of all the movies based on video games I can recall at this moment, that Silent Hill is the best. I've always thought the atmosphere within the game is it's best quality, and that's what the film captured. It was honestly disturbing, as well. I'm happy to know they're making a sequel. Although, to be fair, the game itself is adventure based and has a lot more material to work off of than, say, Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.

Films Thread
I really enjoyed the Dark Knight. I wouldn't label it the #4 movie of all time, as IMDB has it listed, but I thought it was superior to Batman Begins. I was honestly surprised at how violent the movie was. I suppose you can shoot anyone you want, destroy buildings, have disturbing images and situations (Pencil trick/ cell phone in body/choosing between two people rigged to explosives) but not blood or foul language! What was strange for me was watching obvious location shots of Chicago throughout the film and still trying to believe it's "Gotham City." In the beginning where Jokers men are pulling into the bank you can clearly see the fitness center/Union state attachment. The moment Two-Face shoots the driver and the car flips you can make out the surrounding landscape (in addition to the Sears Tower in the background) of the train lines leading into Union Station. Every wide shot of the city you can identify some noticeable Chicago landmark. Hell, Joker even mentions Cicero Avenue. This is probably the sole advantage I'd give to Batman Begins -- it paid more detail to distinguishing Gotham city from Chicago.

Does anyone know a place aside the flea market and online where I can buy nintendo 64 games? Preferably around the south suburbs, but I'll be willing to go to any place within Chicago.

GRE
If you want to lazy approach to tackling the GRE, which I'm more than capable of providing, purchase two different books and take several practice exams. If you score over 1000, which is the minimum many LAS departments require for admittance, then you're good. Find out yours before you begin. I scored well above a 1000 on the cumulative and didn't waste my time studying. When I took the exam several months later I did well and was admitted into graduate school no problem. The LSAT on the other hand was a real pain in the ass for me. There was a time I was interested in law school, spent several weeks studying, and couldn't get above a 160 on the practice tests. That score isn't terrible, but it's right on the borderline for several mid tier schools in Chicago such as Kent or Loyola. It seriously required me to reevaluate the way I infer relationships. It seemed every question had atleast two acceptable answers. I'd pick an answer with the logic of "well, the passage gives evidence for this answer" and the answer would be wrong with an accompanying explanation of "LOLOL it's right but this other answer is better1!!! ." I just couldn't work my mind around these type of questions. It's as if you have to have a different mindset to do well on these tests.

AMAZING scientific breakthrough
It'd be interesting to view the visuals on screen. I wonder if it'd be like watching a movie with every detail clearly represented or some odd collection of shapes/colors Although I find this hilarious: Yeah, that's exactly why you'll continue to receive government grants to complete this project -- to be applied in the fields of art and design. LOLz.

QUOTE (Soxy @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 12:50 PM) Lisa Madigan is my hero. Link to story about motion filed by Madigan. She's intimidating. I was watching her earlier at the press conference and she wasn't taking s*** from any of the reporters. Intelligent women, obviously. She may have been helped by her father in some capacity, but I could definitely see her being our state's governor -- or a US Senator -- some day.

C.C. Sabathia a Yankee
He'll be on the White Sox by 2012, after several subpar years and persistent injury issues force his removal from New York. The Yankees will pay half his remaining contract.

Fall of '08 television season thread
I watched an episode of Summer Heights High on HBO On Demand yesterday and found it hysterical. It was Episode Five, the most recent. After this I had high expectations of the show but upon backtracking and watching the other four I was unimpressed. But really, if you have HBO on Demand check out atleast the one episode. It doesn't really require you to start from the beginning to understand everything.

Finals Week Thread
I actually miss the days of taking exams on finals week. In fact, I've taken only one writing exam since entering graduate school last Fall and it accounted for 15% of the overall grade. I'm done now, though. These last two days I've spent over 12 hours completing a take-home examination for my Statistical Applications course. Hopefully none of you will have to deal with bivariate regression, Factor Analysis/ANOVAs, or any other statistical program available on the devil's playground (SPSS).

Multi-location terror attack in India kills 183+
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 01:51 PM) India tortures prisoner. Prisoner blames Pakistan. India blames Pakistan. Central Asia becomes uninhabitable for about 5000 years. Prisoner somehow survives, later says that he gave false information up under torture. I don't see the problem, do you? Pfft. Peace is boring. In fact I'll be the first person to write LOLacaust over the pictures of a nuclear devastated Islamabad. TORTURE AWAY!

Cabrera offered arbitration
Williams and the rest of the organization has to be absolutely furious right now. It's hard to plan your moves when you have a potential $10 million dollar salary hanging over your ballclub. He sure as hell hasn't dealt Vazquez and Swisher to free up salary for Cabrera's return. I'd just go out and tell Cabrera (or his agent) forthright that the team doesn't want him, and if he's playing here next season he'll be on the bench. Let them decide whether or not he's bluffing.

Catch-All Anything Thread
QUOTE (LosMediasBlancas @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 01:05 AM) Have you ever been so tired that your motor skills begin to fail? It feels kinda like being drunk. Yes. I've also been so tired that I've hallucinated and thought I was hearing things, like the door bell ringing and my dog barking. This was during a time where I had back to back projects to finish for school and was probably up for about two days, with MAYBE 15 minutes of sleep on the train.

Nuke or Bio Terror Attack in US "likely" by 2013
It's appropriate this information was released today. On Friday, during a discussion of the Mumbai terror attacks someone in our class asked our professor (who works with the Chicago Police Department in matters concerning anti-terrorism) whether or not Al-Qeada could orchestrate such a coordinated event on American soil. I expected him to say yes, since they obviously planned a far more elaborate attack seven years ago; but he doubted it since, in his words, "Al Qeada isn't going to act until they're confident they can kill more people than 9/11." Commando style attacks would almost be beneath them. He brought up a good point that since they're the foremost terrorist organization in the world, it's almost an issue of ego. Anything less than 3,000 dead and you're showing weakness. To answer your questions: 1. First you have to atleast some general knowledge of ways in which they're going to administer these biological or nuclear weapons. For biological, you're probably going to have someone flying in from a foreign country with the agent in their system. I suppose all international airports should have their quarantine kits updated in the event of terrorism. Nuclear weapons as you've all discussed are impractical on the scale of Hiroshima unless some rogue nation wants to lose their most populated cities. Any attack of nuclear origins would be a dirty bomb, which could be assembled from radioactive material collected from a hospital combined with a conventional explosive. We should do our part to make sure radioactive materials are disposed of properly, or atleast monitored on site. I could easily see a terrorist entering medical school and finding his way to collecting material over the course of several years. An additional point may be to install radiation beacons in our southern friends, Mexico. If by some chance a live nuclear warhead is entering this nation it's going to be through that s***hole. 2. I believe It depends if whatever the means exploited by the terrorists were opposed by Obama. If he's extremely lax on bolstering security throughout our borders and a terrorist does happen to sneak material through there, it won't look too good for him. Although, you know what -- if we're likely to be hit by a nuclear or biological attack by 2013 then Israel should be due for one any day now. When that happens I'll begin to loosen my collar.

Miss England told that she's too fat
I honestly believe a woman's desire to be rail-thin has little to do with how men perceive them. Someone must have told Karen Carpenter at some point that there would be a million men willing to knock down her door and touch her in inappropriate places. I have a theory -- it's similar to those girls who wear revealing clothes yet feel offended when men notice their titties hanging out. It's about self esteem, and wearing sexy clothes makes the woman feel sexier in the company of other women. This is where I believe the issue presents itself. It's not as if they're torturing themselves for the affection of men. Instead, it's so they can feel as pretty as the models on television or their ridiculous magazines. And no amount of telling them they're beautiful is going to change it. This thread reminds me of a Tribune article printed earlier in the year that discussed male models. I consider myself skinny at 6'2 180, and here were people my height and thirty pounds lighter. They had absolutely no muscle definition in their arms and looked ghastly. I doubt anyone aside from gay men looked at the type of fashion the models were wearing and thought that's the look they were trying to achieve. It was really an odd sight seeing the other side of modeling. Is being on a continuous diet (I'm guessing they have to be) and living amongst fashion people worth the money? I'd be hesistant, because I know it'd change me for the worse.

Chicago's Finest Urban Legends
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 27, 2008 -> 07:02 PM) Isn't there a theory that ghosts take energy from electricity so as to take a more tangible form? I’m still somewhat skeptical over the whole ghost scene, but that’s as good a theory as ever. I suppose the lack of lights does contribute to the atmosphere, as you said. It usually has a lot to do with ghost stories. Hull House in Chicago is believed to be haunted, and you wouldn't have the same fear (if you happened to believe in ghosts) walking by it today. It's practically attached to UIC's student center off Harrison street with street lights illuminating the area and students walking by constantly. It'd be a lot different it was perched atop a hill by itself in the countryside.

Chicago's Finest Urban Legends
QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 27, 2008 -> 06:25 PM) You'd think that there'd be more ghosts on the Dan Ryan, then. It's more the atmosphere than anything else. Of course, with a lot of ghosts stories (such as Resurrection Mary) people claim the presence of street lights somehow lessens accounts of ghosts.

Most attractive hair color?
It's always a combination for me -- hair and eyes. My last three girlfriends have had red hair (two actually had auburn), two had blue eyes; one hazel. I wouldn't even say that's the hair/eye color I'm most attracted to. I believe it's these type of girls that are attracted to ME .

Chicago's Finest Urban Legends
Bachelors Grove in Midlothian is said to be haunted with the ghosts of gangster victims that Capone's people dumped into the small lake on the property. And while I haven't seen anything supernatural driving west on Route 83 in Palos Park, if there's any stretch of road that you would expect a ghost it's over there. I haven't driven through the area in awhile but I recall a good three/four makeshift crosses set up on the side to mark where someone had died. It's just something to think about when you're traveling down this two lane road, alongside a forest with absolutely no street lights, where people routinely drive above 70mph.
