  1. QUOTE (oldsox @ Jul 17, 2015 -> 12:36 PM) As long as this thread is talking about trading Q for an outfielder, why not Q for Cargo? I would rather have Cargo than that head case from LA. CarGo is a player in decline. We'd be getting ripped off big time.
  2. Does it make me a homer that I think the Dodgers would have to throw something in besides Puig? Puig is making more than Quintana over the next 3 years, then throw in the two beneficial team options in Q's deal, Puig's slumping numbers without the benefit of a silly high BABIP, LAD's need to clear away outfielders... I think the Sox say no.
  3. QUOTE (Mike F. @ Jul 17, 2015 -> 11:23 AM) What does that even mean? Is that some sort of advanced metric? http://www.baseballprospectus.com/glossary...at&stat=123 It's really simplistic. Abuse points for a game are (Pitch Count - 100)^3, so every additional pitch over 100 is a little bit worse than the one before it. Obviously 100 is an arbitrary number, and the 115th pitch in one game might be less stressful than the 95th in a different game. It does appear in BP's "Archaic" glossary, so I don't know if anybody takes PAP seriously or not.
  4. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 17, 2015 -> 09:52 AM) I swear every game I go to Danks is pitching. I've been to an inordinate number of Danks games too but I'm still 6-3 so no excuses.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 12:56 PM) So let's try it this way. The White Sox are well known to favor guys who have come through their franchise for various positions. Any ideas on who might be a good candidate to take any of those roles out of people who have been in the Sox organization at some point? Carl Everett.
  6. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 12:02 PM) the tone of voice doesnt bother me as much as him missing crucial plays or calls because he is trying to make inside jokes with DJ. And he calls for a homerun pretty much every other batter, and that is no exaggeration Here's LaRoche he could tie it up with one swing of the bat Carlos Sanchez could tie it up with one swing of the bat Abreu can change this game with one swing of the bat right here
  7. QUOTE (BigFinn @ Jul 16, 2015 -> 10:23 AM) Chris Sale isn't unique; baseball seems to be experiencing a significant uptick in strikeouts these days. He's just the best. And he pitches for the White Sox. How cool is that. Just to add some more fun historical context - the qualified starter with the 30th highest K% this year, Mike Fiers (22.7%), would have been 5th overall in 1965. The 30th highest in 1965 - Ken Johnson, 15.9% - would be 84th this year, just ahead of John Danks.
  8. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 15, 2015 -> 09:05 PM) I think you're reading too much into this. Guerra was called up and basically rotted in the bullpen for a few weeks, Beck had one spot start when Erik wasn't available (would've had to pitch on two days rest), & Montas is getting the call once again when Erik isn't an option. IMO, Johnson is clearly the guy pegged for a rotation spot. They've been monitoring his innings very closely as of late, even skipping a recent start. IMO, that tells me they're expecting/hoping the guy will be needed in the majors in the very near future. This is how I've read it.
  9. QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 03:51 PM) If the voting were held today, would Sale win the CY? No. His ERA isn't low enough. QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 03:53 PM) Now some genius Rangers fan blogger that gets his article on Yahoo says that they should trade for Sale. Goooood luck. http://rangersblog.dallasnews.com/2015/07/...-deadline.html/ DOES ANYBODY EDIT ANYTHING Shockingly, Sale is winning the dumb little poll.
  10. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 03:45 PM) I think you guys are insane, truly nuts. Since when did we start not wanting our guys to play in All Star games and think the manager has some agenda?? This is Chris Sale. He should pitch in the darn all star game and I WANT him to pitch desperately not rest. My gosh, the Royals are 18 over .500 and we are 4 under. They could drop 15 in a row and still beat the Sox out. The Royals will take 3 of 4 by just showing up at the Cell. Yost isn't fretting about Chris Sale. So Ned Yost is plotting some effort to make sure Sale doesn't face his team?? Makes absolutely no sense. It's more of a slap to the Sox if Sale doesn't pitch. They can sell the series, "LETS SHOW YOST!! SALE SHOULD HAVE PITCHED!! HES ONE OF THE BEST AND HE GOT OVERLOOKED By YOST. MUST HAVE BEEN BECAUSE OF THE FIGHT EARLIER THIS SEASON!" Yost is not thinking about the White Sox impending series and Chris Sale. Cmon. The idea Yost is plotting to make sure Sale can't face the Sox is pretty dumb. I mean we are talking about the White Sox here, the lousy, anemic White Sox. It's a total snub if Sale doesn't pitch tonight. Not Yost in some sinister plot. The guy pitched on Saturday. Today is Tuesday for gosh sakes. 1-2 innings tonight. Dude are you ****ing kidding me.
  11. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 03:35 PM) I don't like the "feel" of it, I guess. There are a lot of potential conflicts of interest. I don't think we should be taking ideas from soccer anyway, soccer is dumb.
  12. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 03:21 PM) So who picks up the bill if a career altering injury happens? The article sort of addressed that...poorly "If Sale were to get injured, either team would have the option of canceling the loan agreement, with any/all players involved returning to their original clubs." That is not a solution. Let's say we send Sale to Houston. They get five good starts out of him and he ends up getting hurt, so we send back the prospect? What?? I would be screaming bloody murder for about 100 reasons if this happened.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 12:29 PM) Ha. I think it all started over the period of a few years when I was young and Mt St Helens erupted, and a few years later I got to ride out a hurricane in Texas. I have always been interested in natural disasters. I can't tell you how much reading and watching I have done on earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, etc over the years. Even the only prize I ever won in a science fair was a project on the reforestation of Mt St Helens. The article on Cascadia was spectacular. I have seen it mentioned on a couple of different programs over the years, including the clues of the saltwater-killed forests hundreds of feet above the water line, but this article was great in its detail and length. If you have more on that, I'd be most interested to hear. I am finding a ton of good and interesting stuff on Pluto. I am a pig in mud right now. I'll echo that. My job involves natural disasters pretty heavily so I already knew some of that stuff, but the salt water killing the forests specifically was something I had never heard and found fascinating. Really well-written piece.
  14. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jul 14, 2015 -> 07:11 AM) Winston-Salem Dash ‏@WSDashBaseball 13h13 hours ago Nate Jones' 2nd rehab appearance: 4-3 GO Infield 1B 4-6-3 DP 9 pitches, 7 strikes. Once again, he hovered around 100 mph with his fastball. Encouraging.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 11:40 PM) Give up on a young player 2 years left on deal expensive; average defensively Low OBP High K another stopgap We've seen this act before and it's an approach that has consistently FAILED. Bruce has posted an OBP above league average 5 of the last 6 years, with the one exception being last year's injury-caused down year. He's a good hitter with plus power and he even handles lefties well, something that would satisfy a lot of people who are tired of LaRoche. How long all of that is set to continue and whether it would with a team/league change are up for debate. There are reasons this makes sense and reasons it doesn't. Good thread.
  16. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 01:44 PM) And seriously, if someone can gif the mic drop at the end, please do. The Internet, as always, has you covered. I wish he hadn't smiled afterwards though. Heisenberg would never have smiled.

QUOTE (Dunt @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 02:32 PM) He might not be a great fit, but I'm having a hard time identifying where we are expecting to find power moving forward. Prior to last years disasterous season due to rushing back from a knee injury, Bruce's lowest HR total of his career was 21. Im not even sure 3/4's of this starting lineup can peak at a number like that. The Sox have the pitching to win now, they desparately need offense and improved defense. Where is that coming from? If you're after improved defense, I'm not sure Bruce is your man beyond anyone being an improvement over Avi. Other than that, you make a pretty compelling case. We'd all love to trade for young players, but nobody wants to trade their young players. Here's a guy who hits year after year with a fair contract whose team would be happy to get rid of him. It just doesn't feel like the type of move the Sox should be making. I can't articulate why. Maybe it's that if we assume Shark walks after the season, we really have no idea if the Sox have the pitching to win now.
  18. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 02:16 PM) Very dumb. As much as I do love Danks, I concede that is an automatic loss in Game Two Friday. Why would you throw Danks there?? It makes absolutely no sense. I agree with the poster. The Sox are basically in a position they have to sweep the Royals or grudgingly win 3 of the 4 to have any shot at contention this season. So why wouldn't you give it your best shot, at home! You go Sale, Shark, Q, Rodon. I worship John Danks but I do concede he is our fifth starter!! This is a no brainer. Fire whoever came up with this decision NOW! Coop, Robin or Hahn. Stupid. Has there every been anything you didn't overreact to?

QUOTE (knightni @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 01:52 PM) Bruce has very poor plate discipline and batting average. Is that someone that the Sox need to add? He has a 10% walk rate every year and a higher ISO than anybody currently playing on the Sox. I think most lineups would be happy to add him, especially ours. That said, I don't see him as a great fit.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 13, 2015 -> 11:11 AM) Q: If a ball is in the air, does a batter have to wait til it lands before taking another swing? Because otherwise timed penalizes you for actually hitting a long HR. It's possible that MLB didn't fully think through an element of the All-Star event. o_o
  21. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 12, 2015 -> 07:18 PM) Nintendo President Satoro Iwata passed away today at 55 due to a bile duct growth He was responsible for my favorite video game hitting its release date. RIP
  22. QUOTE (gatnom @ Jul 10, 2015 -> 09:43 AM) He also swings at the 3rd most pitches out of the zone and is the 9th worst at hitting pitches out of the zone in all of the mlb. Obviously, he's still young, but I'm not exactly holding my breath. The Sox really need him to put it together. This. He doesn't show any good instincts. His arrow is pointing down.
