Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer

Featured Replies

5/125 is perfectly reasonable for a 29 year old coming off of two consecutive 4+ win seasons. This franchise is a fucking joke.

  • Honestly curious - do you think people think this type of stuff (posting in every thread at once) and the poop bit are funny?

  • we just saw two of the most expensive rotations in baseball squaring off in the World Series but yes spending on pitching is a terrible idea.

Dallas Keuchel had a lower ERA than Zack. Keuchel's was .21 lower than Zack.

Don’t go down that road.

Jerry is never going to want to spend that much on a pitcher.

Agreed, I wonder if it was the years.

when does Bob leak the sox offer? any minute now, right?

This is laughably bad.  The headline free agent SP the next 2 years that won't be 40 years old is what? Paxton? Bauer?

Thank God we hit on all those 1st, 2nd, 3rd round picks since we've been terrible to trade for a SP. Wew.

Remember yesterday when so many people told me I was wrong about this. I remember.

No, I think they could still have a great off-season, I just worry that if this was really "their main target and guy" that a 10 million dollar difference over 5 years is what cost him that it's really detrimental to the future of this team.

It's the fact that it was such a small amount of money that cost them that makes it much worse.

Hey it was a "competitive offer"!

Fine. I'll take Rendon instead. :D

5/$100M was my max.  Was willing to stretch to 5/$115, full well knowing that it could blow up.

It sucks to lose out on Wheeler, but I don't think this is the end of the world.

Watch it be like 4/80 with incentives.

I'm happy they didn't go that high. 24 mil a year is a bit crazy.

The issue is that if they valued him at 22 million a year, then 24 is just the cost of doing business in FA.

This is too close to excuse; unless they matched and Wheeler just wanted to stay in the NL and out east, there's no excusing it. I do admit that it's possible that was what Wheeler chose.

It's only $2 mill more a year than what a lot on here said they would do.

Anything over $20 million a year for that guy  or most SPs is absurd.

It's not smart business.

At those number for pitching, beef up the lineup in RF and DH and pray for a miracle from Lopez, Kopech, Cease.

The pitching market is just absurd at this point.

I will wager we try to trade for Chris Archer now.. Would be such a White Sox Move..

Cash is king.

2nd place again. When is the annual participation trophy ceremony? It's $10 million over 5 years. If that hampers their efforts they might as well start trading the Moncadas and Giolitos now.

So what pitcher will we sign now? Madbum is said to be getting 100m. This is a disaster.

The failures of this Front Office are really piling up.

I think we can all kiss any hope of winning anything goodbye. We can also kiss Moncada and Giolito goodbye after 2021, as they'll be traded and we'll just start the whole rebuild over again.

This fucking sucks. Chicago sports is a barren wasteland right now. No hope anywhere.

The Sox don't seem to realize that in FA, your "worth" is what someone will pay you.

This is not the end of the world, so long as the Sox have strong contingency plans. Our whole offseason does not revolve around Wheeer, but they had better pivot to other quality options quickly.

Its been well document that the Sox had an offer on the table of 5/$100M-$110M.
