Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer

Featured Replies

Sox are willing to spend. This was not a failure. They learned from last year. Wheeler is an idiot for leaving money on the table. That tweet from Rosenthal was enough to make me a believer.

  • Honestly curious - do you think people think this type of stuff (posting in every thread at once) and the poop bit are funny?

  • we just saw two of the most expensive rotations in baseball squaring off in the World Series but yes spending on pitching is a terrible idea.

If you are willing to spend 25 mill/yr on a 4 win pitcher...why not spend an additional 10 mil per year and get a 9 win one.

Maybe missing out really does open up the door again, we can only hope i suppose.

wish the phillies would stop blowing smoke.

Wheeler was the guy. He was the only realistic shot at TOR performance that didn’t require a $160M+ contract. The other “fish in the sea” are either substantially worse or substantially more expensive. I don’t think the abject despair some are feeling is overblown if you look at the context of the market.

The only way to get the pitching they need now is via trade, which would pull from a talented bun already thin system, thus hurting the teams chances, and all, again, for the sake of saving money.

The team is simply not operating at the same level as the rest of the MLB. If this is how they are going to act, only blind luck will ever bring a championship

He's not a TOR pitcher though. He's good, but he's no ace. I think you guys are way too emotional.

Feel free to delete the last 10 pages of overreaction now.

Unfucking real.

I take back everything I said.

Is it really more in real dollars or performance based options.

Give Strasburg $200M over 6 years.

LOL

Ok, Jack.

Huh? Impossible to blame the front office if they offered the most money.

This has to be very demoralizing to Hahn and Co.

They had the highest offer.

WOW.  Stop the b****ing, fellas.

5/120 is alot.

Get Ryu for 3/60 if you can.

They have to act fast in terms of FA or trade to thwart the rising anger.

If that was ANYONE but Rosenthal I would say BS. Since it's Kenny, it's safe to say it's a fact.

Actually I'm heartened they had the highest offer. Maybe it's not so crazy that they look at Strasburg, at least.

wow... the one fucking time we don't sign the relatives, family, best friends, uncles, imaginary friends and all that, of the player we want to sign and it actually would have made a difference.

When they missed on Manny last year, I felt like someone punched me in the gut. This year with Wheeler, it’s nothing like that.  Hopefully they get creative with this money now.

Get mad JerBear and just go get Cole or Stras..... Or/And get tve most criminally underrated pitcher on the market, Hyun Jin Ryu.

Our offer for Machado was "more" as well. Was it more guaranteed money though?

I think even if we went 5/$125M it may not have been enough. Close to home, staying in NL, with a division he's familiar with. I don't fault them for losing this one.

Take a walk or something.

nuh-uh man, no way phillies can afford more players (phillies sign castellanos from sox)

The other fish in the sea is true. Sorry. Go back 2-3 years and tell me if you thought you'd be heart broken about not signing Zack wheeler to a $24mm/yr contract?

There will be other SP that come along. Just like Giolito sprouted up and did well, there will be others. There will also be small market teams that are willing to trade Archers and Coles.

Everything will be fine. Breathe and just enjoy a team that's finally turning the corner and on it's way to 81 wins. Have fun with it. There will be ups and (many) downs this year as these 22 & 23 year old kids learn the MLB.

I will apologize if the "more money" in the tweet was actual real money and not fake not guarenteed money, again.

But is Rosenthal commenting on actual guaranteed money or did we pull another Machado fiasco with bonus' and other escalating clasuses

Cole and Strasburg will both look like significantly better deals on a $/WAR basis than Wheeler does. Targeting one of them should be a no brainer.
