Was on a plane so I missed the break, but wow. This is fantastic news. 

I think Moncada is going to be streaky his entire career, but the tools are so loud and he’s willing enough to adjust that the average production will make this a steal.

You should remember that last year could be a career year. Hopefully not . We're all thinking on the bright side that Yoan will continue to be a stud just like when a player is bad we expect them to keep being bad such as McCann. Or Mediocre like Mazara  Why do you think everyone was clamoring for just about any RF besides Mazara ?

It always hard to imagine players being anything but what we have seen in the past.

As @Eminor3rd noted his tools are so loud that he's going to produce 3 WAR despite himself any given year.  And the Sox have him in his athletic prime.  I can see Moncada staying a 3-5 WAR player but I can also see him ascending into a 6-8 WAR player like Betts.

If he rips his ACL or core apart yea this contract could stink.  But other than that there's almost no way he isn't a solid contributor for the duration of it and likely, much much more.

Last off season when the Sox didnt sign Machado then said the money will be spent focusing on their own players. Many posters scoffed at it and repeatedly asked, "when will the money be spent?"

This off season they have signed free agents and their own young players to a total of 336 million, pretty close to the amount that Machado would have made if he met all of the incentives in the contract. It looks like they've spent it. Hopefully, it was spent wisely.

The Chicago White Sox have agreed to a five-year extension with third baseman Yoan Moncada worth $70 million, a source confirmed to ESPN on Thursday.

The contract includes a sixth-year club option worth $25 million and includes a $5 million buyout. It also buys out two years of Moncada's free agency.

 

So 6/$95 or 5/$75 (including buyout).  Story credits The Athletic with having the story first.

Over the past year, general manager Rick Hahn has pushed back on the idea that the White Sox should consider all baseball decisions with the view that at the end of the 2023 season, Yoán Moncada would potentially walk out the door and drag their contention window shut on his way out.

On Thursday, the Sox and Moncada eliminated that possibility entirely by agreeing to a five-year contract extension with a club option for the 2025 season, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. The deal is for $70 million and the club option could bring the total to $90 million. The Sox now potentially have contractual control of Moncada through the next six seasons, at the end of which he would be 30 years old. Who knows how high the oceans will be by then.

I’m not sure if it was actually reported or listed in here, but Fangraphs has an excellent payroll tool and it shows the amounts for this extension as follows:

• 2020: $2M
• 2021: $7M
• 2022: $14M
• 2023: $18M
• 2024: $24M
• 2025: $25M*

So the total arbitration commitment is ~$40M if you include the small increase he got this year.  For some comps, Machado got ~$32M over his three arbitration years while Arenado got ~$34M.    Also, Bergman’s extension was worth ~$44M in his first four years, which is ~$3M higher than Moncada’s deal.  His two options years were worth $57M vs. Moncada’s $49M or ~$8M less.

Obviously there is some inflation built into this deal, which is also reflected in the Bregman contract.  That being said (and despite Balta’s ridiculous injury theory), we are paying him star 3B money for his three arbitration years.  The real value is those two free agent years we’re buying.  In all honestly, those are probably worth somewhere in the $80M to $100M range and we’re getting them for a reasonable $49M.  Yes, we need Moncada to be a star, but if he is this deal should provide quite a bit of surplus value right when our core guys are starting to get expensive.  Just an amazing deal all things considered.

This is awesome.  Seems like a great deal for the Sox.  Love the fact that Jimmy and NSC had the info first and turned out to be right.  All of the vehement denials by the national reporters look pretty silly.

The deal really made my day yesterday.  It was a rough day at work, and didn't get a chance to look at SoxTalk or Twitter until about 7:00 last night.  This was just the type of news I needed.

Late to the party here. Love the deal obviously, not because it’s a super team friendly deal, but for the reason that this guarantees he will be on the team for the next 5/6 years.

For comparison, Kris Bryant made $40M in his arb years and he was ROY and MVP by year 2, and CWS noted Machado and Arenado made a bit more than $30M in their arb years. I think Yoan could make $30-35M in those years based on his current trajectory. So really we’re getting his 5th and 6th years for $55-60M. Not huge savings financially, but the deal helps keep the core together and guarantees strong production from a key position during our “window”.

I am quite confident the Sox will be paying Moncada more over the next 4 season than they would have via the arb process.  He wasn't making $41M the next 4 years.  But its really about the 2 extra years of team control, 1 of which is an option.  Awesome deal for both sides - glad it got done!
