Is Leury's time almost up

Agree to disagree here. He’s got to be much better with the bat than he’s been so far.  The versatility isn’t worth much of anything when he’s hitting at sub replacement player levels.

Yeah...and with teams having 4 man benches, most have a guy that can play infield and outfield, even if they can't hit much (like Leury). He's not that special really.

The funny part is that there is probably so many contending teams around the league wanting a guy like Leury.    He is not THAT bad guys. Cut it out.

  • You all realize that Leury is putting up a .730 OPS over his last 30 days with a .276 avg & .375 OBP all while being a pretty solid defender over multiple positions.  He also has .5 WAR thus far -

He is in the 3rd percentile for xwOBA and was in the 4th percentile in 2019.  He has proven himself to be one of the worst hitters in baseball.  I get that his versatility is theoretically valuable, b

yeah he had a good game today - but that doesn't change that it's bad that he plays every day for a contending team.

No fuckin shit.  Nobody is excited about the devastating injuries this year that are the main factor for his playing time.

Abreu death knell thread, meet Leury death knell thread.

Leury is guaranteed $3.5M. Unless they're going to decide to leave him off a playoff roster, he's not getting cut until then.

Haha, Leury is a as safe as safe can be

With Goodwin around, there isn't as much need for Leury. Mendick has shown to be playable in the OF as well. This is probably his last

hurrah for the Sox.

I've been an advocate for having Leury on the bench because he can play all the infield and outfield positions well, and that gives you incredible flexibility with your team, especially in the late innings. That and the fact that he can't be sent down have led to him having a lock on a 25-man roster spot no matter how bad his hitting was.

However, nobody predicted Yermin Mercedes, Jake Lamb, Danny Mendick, and even Billy Hamilton outhitting him, so have we reached the point where Leury's flexibility no longer justifies carrying his sub .600 OPS on the roster? Hamilton (when he's back) can play the OF about as well as Leury and has been hitting better than him, and Mendick can handle the IF and is also hitting better.

Leury has been hitting the ball better lately.  He has value as switch hitter and flexible positions. With Madrigal out we need him even more. Keep the guy.

With all of the injuries we have had, it is a minor miracle that he isn't yet hurt.

Ahhhh....i  totally misread that as two thoughts.

"This is probably his last"

"and hurrah (hurray) for Sox"

I am not a huge Leury guy by any means, but its good thing he's been around.  The less he plays the better, but its good to have a guy like that around.  Its not like we have anything behind him that would be more exciting.

This is probably his last season is a Sox uni, though.  But there is no way he doesn't survive the season, barring injury.

Why would his time be up he's our #3 hitter now

we are injured though thats why he is batting 3rd duh....

You all realize that Leury is putting up a .730 OPS over his last 30 days with a .276 avg & .375 OBP all while being a pretty solid defender over multiple positions.  He also has .5 WAR thus far - which given how bad his April was - is pretty impressive.  He is pretty much back to being exactly who he has been most of his career with the Sox (which is a pretty darn serviceable utility guy who ends up getting quite a bit of ab's due to his versatility). IN this case - probably more than anyone would like given how many injuries happened.

Leury also gets bashed a lot about his baseball IQ but in tonight's game against TB he hit a double took 3rd on a fly ball by Mendick and scored a run on a wild pitch that probably most of our players do not score on. He got a big secondary lead off third and made a split second decision to go home once the ball was in the dirt and bounced away from Zunino. He was really surprising how fast he got home and was easily safe. His speed, versatility, switch hitting and his OF defense all help win games. The same can be said for ( except for switch hitting) Hamilton. Until Eloy and Robert come back I suspect both will be around until then or the trade deadline.

He also has a solid enough arm to play all three outfield positions and especially SS better than Mendick.

Compared to Vaughn/Mercedes/Eaton, he's not even the biggest problem offensively in the line-up right now.

And it seemed inevitable that some of our other "back up QB" hitters (beyond those already named) like Lamb were going to return to earth as well.

For now, Goodwin's the flavor of the day/week, but how long will that actually last?

Basically, TB just has a better bullpen and a better defense right now...overall, they SHOULDN'T be better than the White Sox with everyone back in the line-up and a bench of Collins/Leury/Engel/Hamilton or Lamb.

He is infinite.

"Well, you've got to have speed,” said La Russa of the aggressive play by García. “But talk about multi tools, with the switch-hitting and the ability to play all over. He came from first base, he got a great jump and it all developed ahead of him. He was just steps behind the scorer. That's who he is, not just a great talent, he's a very instinctive player as well."

These threads do their job well

Good thread thanks.

Leury flashing the leather, hitting .256 and some hits in big situations the last couple weeks. What more do you want from a utility guy? Oh yea he can play 46 positions as well.
