Flying in for a couple games, need info

Recommended Posts

So I have made my girlfriend a huge Sox fan. She has never seen a MLB game in person so we are flying in from Raleigh, NC in June to spend a few days in Chicago and go to 2 games. Looking like 2 of the games against the Orioles.

Which airport is best to fly into?

Which area is best to stay in?  Going to 2 sox games and will also have a free day to explore Chicago.

Any recommendations on some food places we need to eat at would be appreciated?

Midway is much less of a hassle and closer to the ballpark. I have family in Raleigh, and we usually fly Southwest RDU to Midway. Depending on the days/time you should be able to find some good pricing.

I have no experience flying in but we loved staying in the Millennium Park area, close to all the landmarks and also the magnificent mile, we stayed at The Gwen which is right on Michigan Ave, we liked it a lot. If you are looking for a deal check Priceline, you usually can get a pretty good deal and can figure out the hotel beforehand if you do a little research. All you have to do is jump on the red line to get to the Sox park which has multiple stops in the downtown area

Airport depends where you stay. Both suck these days really. Midway slightly better. I'd stay in streeterville/ east River North area. Can hit up all the touristy stuff and world class restaurants all around. Can also take the El to get to the games easily and quick from there.

Appreciate the info everyone. I took my son to 2 games during John Danks last year, we were terrible. I made the mistake of booking a brand new la quinta inn. Unfortunately it was in the scary part of town where the uber guy told me to be very careful. I dont want to make that mistake again.

I would do Midway personally and would probably stay at a hotel in River North / Streeterville or in the Loop if you are doing touristy things.  Sox Park is super easy to get to by L (Green or Red lines) from downtown and has some decent pre/post food & drink options.  South Loop and Chinatown are also a super close Uber/Lyft ride or a few stops north on the Red Line for food/drinks after.

I'd stay away from the city.

Fly into O'hare and Stay in Rosemont right next to the airport.  Take the Blue Line to the Red Line transfer to get to the ballpark.

Great restaurants in Rosemont (Gibson's, Carmine's, Harry Caray, Morton's, Capital Grille , Giordanos (if you crave Chicago deep dish)).   You also have our best Casino there in the area.

Dont stay in the Loop, its not safe to walk around anymore once the commuter crowd clear out.  Stay in Streeterville or River North if you really want to you’ll probably be fine.  Stay away from large groups of youths congregating anywhere.

All of this right here. Avoid downtown especially on the weekends.

If you’re afraid of crime in the city the worst possible advice is to tell him to take the blue/red line in lol.  Especially the blue, its a mess lately.

Odds are if you're staying in the city you are still using public transportation to get to the ballpark.

Tourists are definitely taking ubers to the ballpark.  No one is taking our cesspool transport that doesn't have to.

That's not true. Red line was all yankees fans and Northside Sox fans  this past weekend. You'd be hard pressed to run into issues going to a game on it really.

Just two things here:

1) Not sure I would consider "Northside Sox fans" as tourists.

2) Yankees fans are basically walking cesspools

The chicago crime is really starting to stoke fear fires ... sad to see. But I somewhat get it.

Don't let people get you down on here. The city isn't perfect, but isn't falling apart completely.

As someone who lived in the city I'd make these adjustments:

Consider uber or taxi instead of red line. red line should be okay on a game day/night, but if you want to be extra careful, it may make sense. if you schedule your uber for pickup like 2-3 hours ahead of time you should cut down on costs.

You'll be okay staying in any hotel downtown. again, it's just being aware of your surroundings. it sucks, but sadly its a reality nowadays. if you see groups of people, then you may want to be on guard.

food wise? I think your best bet for a patio is fried chicken pizza ice cream. it's like a half mile from the park and has some damn good food. You can guess the menu. they have a nice patio and beer selection too. best food around the park.
