This seems like an over reaction. In fact, I think worrying about who the opening day starter any season is an over reaction.

  • Huh. Very cool for him. Even though I thought Davis Martin deserved it.

Good for Burke. He has the best stuff of the 4 guys named. Ultimately it doesn’t matter as everyone is the #1 on the day they go.

When is opening day?

A week from Thursday. For the Sox, anyway.

10 months ago it looked like he'd never make the bigs. Pitching for a rotten team does have its perks.:)

As a 3rd rounder, the guy was always a dude. He just needed to return from the injury.

Thanks. Haven't had much time to pay attention

He's got 0% chance of being as good as Crochet, but he could be a young Freddy Garcia with a better k/9. Good 4 pitch mix, plus velo, big body and extension.

Why would Smith make sense but not Burke?

Have you seen Smith in ANY of his starts this spring. In his first start, he was nervous and walked the 1st two guys and they scored. But since then he has been amazing.

Did you see him against the Dodgers and a very real Dodgers lineup? And I know it's spring training yada, yada, yada. But Smith has looked really impressive.

Mowed down everyone in his last B game start too...it has been all positives since that first inning of the spring.

Will picked a nobody because somebody had to do it. Why waste a good arm when he might win game two.

Then he can start game 4 or 5. What's the difference?

Define great please. If you mean only losing 110 games then I'm right there with you! 😆

Getz intimated it was about match-ups later in April against AL Central foes, but that's really stretching it.

In theory, they'd want to break up Burke and Shane Smith and have those guys slotted between the likes of Cannon and Martin Perez that are soft tossers.

So maybe something like Burke Perez Martin Cannon Sh.Smith/B.Wilson...

I think there is zero reason to put that type of thought into it before the season begins. They will be rained out/snowed out probably once a week for the first month.

That's just depressing.

It is.

Very depressing, the entire organization from ownership on down is depressing.

I've been a fan now since 1960 when I was five. This will be my 64th season I have never in my life felt less hope than this year.

It's really remarkable when you think about it how this franchise has been flushed right down the toilet.

My thinking right now unless a miracle happens is I'll check the final score and that it. No sense wasting my time on anything else.

Did you see Burke in the majors last year?

He was basically rookie Kip Wells-esque his first three starts.

We'll see soon enough how sustainable it is...but the cold weather definitely will suppress runs scored in April.

Can just imagine fastballs (and cutters/sliders) at those peak velocities barrelling in on the hands at 95-96 in 34 degree weather.

Imagine hitting Sasaki fork/splits off a 97-100 mph fb?

Of the 4 members of the rotation, it's hard to for me to understand how it wasn't more deserved by any of the other 3. But I guess it doesn't matter

Maybe if it’s all the same to anyone, then you just roll with whoever seems to be most physically ready to bring his stuff and go the longest. Whoever.

I have been to Opening Days on the South side for many years. ODs have gotten a lot better every year since the Sox moved across the street. Now it's just a massive picnic. The feeling among the crowds is similar to what we have down Western Ave. with the SS Irish parade...everyone is in great spirits, smiling,  and sharing a lot of camaraderie, drinks and food  with family and friends.  To me it's a sign of Spring and the baseball season to come.  The games are usually played in cold conditions so the starting pitcher and the players (and us fans) need to soldier through that.  Our OD starter may not have been the consensus pick based on match-ups and metrics, but rather for his grit and determination.  I am 100% behind him and the team. Our group will have a great time, win or lose, rain or shine as we always do on Opening Day.

I’ll be hammered while tailgating by first pitch so doesn’t really matter to me.

Hoping the best for him....but expecting the worst

I haven't heard of any of our pitchers so I have work to do. That said, do you guys think we're looking at two times the order for all our starters and that's about it? The Sox are into analysis now, right. Not flaming here just wondering. Are we expecting 4 to 5 innings max out of our starters?

Kind of hard to imagine any of these guys aside from Perez racking up very many innings. Could get brutal after injuries mount with the pen worn out by July

I'm glad they gave it to a guy who may have a future with the team rather than a re-tread who will be gone at the end of the season at the latest.
