Sounds like the WBC guys (Murakami, Teel, Antonacci, Mead) will all be in the lineup for the opener to get them reps before leaving.

Teel (and I assume Antonacci?) set to leave March 1 to join Team Italy

Murakami will miss the first two Team Samurai exhibition games against NPB teams this upcoming Sun/Mon and pick up as they play four more games as they start playing again on the 27th.  First game with them would be 28th but most likely 29th due to slight jet lag/massive time change.

MLB players can't play in the early exhibitions, which is part of Mune's reason for staying in camp a few extra days. He isn't expected to play until the games in Osaka on March 2/3.

Quero knows he can do better offensively and defensively.

Always love these spring training interviews and this is probably my favorite one. Huge fan of Edgar. Seems like a really smart dude, dedicated to improving and taking the right steps to do so, and I'm also really impressed by his English. No judgment to players who don't learn English, but doing a 20 minute interview in a second language with no translator is no small feat. What stuck out to me is Chuck talking about "light at the end of the tunnel", an idiomatic expression that doesn't exactly translate, and Edgar not missing a beat. I hate that my two favorite players on this team play the same position and there isn't necessarily an alternative position for them.

Thought an extra interesting insight to this interview is that Sox pitchers aren't going to be calling for ABS reviews, that the catchers will. That may be standard across the league, but I think both of our catchers have shown an excellent command of the strike zone. It's gonna be a fun year watching those guys compete for the starting catcher job. Teel was the better framer, Quero is picking off guys like a motherfucker. Teel was a better hitter his rookie season, but Quero looks like he'll inevitably figure it out.

I love EQ. Like you said, really smart and dedicated. Comes across as so mature for someone not yet 23. I really value the game/pitcher management side of catching and I rate him over Teel there, so he'd get the bulk of games at C if it were up to me. But I won't complain about being a bit spoiled at the position.

When it comes to ABS challenges, the MiLB data shows that catchers are comfortably the most accurate with challenges, batters are a bit worse, and pitchers are pretty terrible. Quero was good with them from both sides of the plate in AAA due to his plus zone recognition. Thought it was interesting he said he'd value them more as a catcher than a batter.

It just killed me to see so many people suggesting trading EQ. He's so good so young. We've only seen the tip of the iceberg of his talent.

All the inquiries about him were about recognizing his talent and trying to get him before he reaches his full potential.

I realize Teel is the real deal too. He hit all 8 of his HR's in the 2nd half and his OPS was .833 ! He only had 300 AB last year. He could easily double his HR total.

I know its hard to carry 3 catchers but Quero and Teel both need to get 500+ AB as 2 of the Sox most dynamic young players with loads of upside.

Teel is much better than Quero in my opinion. There are only 4 guys in baseball with a slower bat than Quero, and while some of those guys are good (Kwan!), they are also unicorns. Ironically, Meidroth is one of the guys that has a slower bat, and it's a big reason I don't have much faith in either of those guys.

At least Quero understands his bat speed and EV's will prevent him from being an impact bat and is working on it, but I'm skeptical of the add potential there given his approach.

The good thing is, while bat speed is important ,it's not the end all be all of professional hitting.

It's really important to pulling and power hitting but may hurt you if you have an all fields approach to hitting or as Quero calls it being a professional hitter.

Robert had a fast bat and with his strength balls went a long way but recognizing pitches and injuries led to massive inconsistencies.

Quero potential is more based on the mental side of hitting, the science behind it , knowing how pitchers think. A lot of times you can have all the physical gifts in the world but the mental part, dealing with failure, making adjustments is what prevents many , many players from taking the next steps. That emotional and intellectual development puts you way ahead of the curve if you have it at a young age.

Im not saying he's the better player than Teel. Im just saying they both have a lot of room to grow and need to get as many PA as possible.

Id put Acuna , Sosa Baldwin in the same category. Upside high need runway. Guys like Colson and Mune will play almost every day regardless so I'm not counting them.
