To further clarify, he had to stop pitching due to pain in the elbow. It was diagnosed as a "flexor strain." They later saw the spur when imaging the elbow to check his recovery. They decided to remove that. The next time he tried to throw full speed was in spring training when his UCL gave way all the way.

Fair enough and I stand corrected.  If he had the bone spur in 2024 hopefully that explains the velocity. There were games he wasn't even topping out over 91 iirc.

The score isn’t really ugly.  The offensive performance however…

I spoke too soon.  But this is usually how ST games go once the starters take a seat.  Although Paez has to last on the active roster for a bit to remain under Sox control.

my over riding posting philosophy remains larry from sss dead horse meme. make a point and move on.

I have 2 points. Or one question and one point. You played college ball, right? Is the dead arm period of spring training a real thing?

The point is that Thorpe threw 7 games in the bigs, and 6 were reasonably good 5-6 inning outings. Then he tried pitching through pain to disastrous results. I don't rely on my eye test or the reading of deep dive stats to know if Thorpe is actually awesome, or not. I know he was known for a great changeup.

Who did the Padres trade to the Yankees to get Thorpe?

The  Padres got a lot more than just Thorpe for 1 year of Soto
And if they didn't get enough, they mitigated well by getting 2 years of Cease.   And they paid a lot more for 2 months of Tanner Scott than 2 years of Cease.
Getz has had the better leverage position in most of these trades; he needs  use it.

Padres were desperate to form a super pen that year and had LAD down 2-1 in post season with Cease starting...

Just didn't work out.

Same with Soto in NY, in the sense they didn't win it all or keep him.

I think this was mentioned numerous times by posters back when the Cease trade went down, but it seems even more likely to be the truth now.  You had two good organizations with good scouting both willing to deal away a top rated pitching prospect in Thorpe, even though his minor league numbers were excellent.  It’s almost like both the Yankees and Padres knew while Thorpe could dominate hitters in the minors, his stuff simply wouldn’t fare well against major league hitters so they sold high on him.

People have been pretty dismissive of Mead based on last year, but it does look to me like he made some kind of adjustment over the offseason.

His EVs, barrel%, and pullair% are all way up in spring so far. Wonder if he was another participant in the Fuller bat speed program.

But who does he play over?

Vargas?  Sosa?  Hays?
