From the Sun-Times story this evening:

It’s May and what’s up with Kyle Teel?

The projected starting catcher has been down with a Grade 2 right hamstring strain since March 10 after running out a double for Team Italy in a victory over Team USA during the World Baseball Classic. Though he’s been throwing and hitting and even crouching to do some catching, running has been problematic Teel admitted on Wednesday.

“Every day I’m taking a step to be back playing baseball,” Teel said. “The rehab is going good. I’m running better every single day. And it’s only a matter of time before I’ll be ready to go on my rehab assignment and be back.”

Teel has been saying this for weeks. But the reality is this: Around April 19, Teel had a setback running and his rehab assignment at that point was delayed. Originally he was only supposed to be out four to six weeks. That timetable has long since come and gone.

You can’t play if you can’t run and the Sox continue to delay his minor-league rehab assignment. Plus, Venable has been satisfied with the work of Drew Romo both behind the plate and working with the pitching staff.

“Teel is getting closer,” Venable said. “I feel really good about his progress, him getting up to speed with his running. But some of the recovery has been slower than we wanted. We’ll continue to push him to run the bases when we go home and see where we are at.”

No mention of Quero....

Stop me if you have heard this one before...

Not good at all. hamstring is probably the worst lower body soft tissue injury outside a tendon or ligament rupture. We will be lucky to see him by June in Chicago it seems.

And people thought Luka may return from Grade 2 hamstring strain after 4-6 weeks for the Lakers. This is taking Teel a while.

@ptatc please come back to us!

Adductor killed a Robert season...Eloy with his pectoral muscle tear. Oblique strains/tears.

The "setback" while running sounds like the hamstring may have been re-injured to some degree. Anyway, whatever happened there seems to have created another uncertain timeline. As a fan, I wish someone from the White Sox medical or training staff would address this rather than Venable.

See you in 2028

Might as well keep giving Romo time. I was intrigued by him when we picked him up since he was a former top prospect and it’s been nice to see him playing well

Agreed. The Sox seem to treat their injuries like hockey teams would. Like they are at a disadvantage if they give out too much information on an injury.

Hopefully that is not the case. Although the Romo pickup could be huge if it is. In any case, Quero probably needs to go down regardless. Give Romo a shot as starter and call up Lee to back him up.

I've been saying for years the manager who doesn't have any real medical experience or training shouldn't be commenting on these things at all.

When they are asked by the media they should be saying, "talk with our trainer..."

perhaps they won't send Quero to AAA, maybe give him the Colson/Fuller treatment first in Arizona, maybe they can do some tweaking there

It's annoying not to have him, but I don't really feel that alarmed. From what has been said about it, it seems the "setback" was merely that when they pushed him all the way to full-speed sprinting, he was continuing to feel the catch associated with the initial injury. I don't think we have any particular reason to believe that he reinjured it...it's just not fully healed. Or at least it wasn't a couple weeks ago. Brooke said during the broadcast in LA that he had reached a stage at which the main focus was his ability to bounce back after full speed workouts and that he had just reported not feeling sore after such a workout. I believe it was during the pregame show so I can't find a recording anywhere since CHSN doesn't seem to archive much of anything. Wouldn't surprise me if the Sox are trying to be as cautious as humanly possible with it.

Best data I can find is that in pro sports, about a third of players who pull a hamstring will have a recurrence of it within that same season. And when it recurs, it's usually worse. So they are trying to protect him. And, of course, it's not the White Sox propping up those 33% recurrence rate numbers. It's hard to keep guys perfectly healthy.

Bright side is there's not really a ton of risk of a serious long-term problem that extends beyond this season. Just a matter of getting him 100% and being as sure as you can be that it's not about to snap back (pardon the pun). Then you avoid injuring some other part of his lower half from compensation.

As bummed as I am that I won’t be able to see him for my first in person game of the season next week, I’m glad they aren’t rushing him. Get him healthy and play him when he’s back to 100 percent. No need to further injure something and compromise one of our future cornerstones.
