On top of a much bigger need. That’s all. I keep hearing that they were worried about losing Thome to another team instead of focusing on Prosek. Interesting. Why is that interesting? Are you saying Prosek is the better prospect?

And of course the idea to trade him would come up and the near universal sentiment was that a couple of good months in Charlotte didn't create trade value. In Chicago, he wasn't overmatched, but he didn't wow either; and he never played middle infield. So how much trade value did he really build up?And then the reality is that he just wasn't on Getz' A-team (sending him back down was the final statement on that). Getz may be wrong about that, and perhaps other teams saw him more favorably, and, thus might have paid more. But I could also see scenarios where they let him linger in AAA for a while, and whatever value there is wastes away. I'll save my angst for when we package young players for an average starter....If it were up to you they would never make a trade

Interesting.I think Thome was happening no matter what. The whole world knew it. Guessing this fit his slot bonus better, and their intel was that Thome might not make it to 41 (Yankees at 35) while Prosek would. Prosek DID make it through.

But I hate young-for-old trades that seem to be all anyone can come up with this time of year. Those trades destroyed us over the past decade (and beyond): Samardzija, Shields.....Kimbrel trade was the kill shot of the last playoff edition, and it would have set this edition back another 2 years had the Cubs picked Crochet instead of Madrigal. Yea, let's do more of that. Edited Wednesday at 01:55 AM3 days by GreenSox

Yea, let's do more of that.Sammy Sosa to the Cubs for George Bell was the grand poppy of them all! I can still remember Hawk talking about how great it was to have a “professional hitter” like Bell in the lineup that year. Edited Wednesday at 05:40 AM3 days by Chick Mercedes

Just because Gonzalez was the most obvious piece have you not been paying attention to all the "experts" saying the Sox had the best draft ?Do you want to be 1 and done or do you want to sustain this and dominate the division for years to come ?
4 hours ago4 hr You gotta give to get. Getz has been giving and getting in his last few trades. Yes there is downside risk, but it also opens up teams willing to deal with you as a FO. If you're always just jerking other clubs around it's not ideal to getting things done and certain GMs do get reps.Look at the Mead trade. Boston is now a top 100 type prospect and Meade looks like a solid super utility guy. We had no room for him or Gonzo sadly, that's just how it goes, at least we didn't lose them for nothing.

Gonzo and Mead tied for series MVP.

It's not just about trading him, it's about getting bent over backwards in the trade. Trading him for a 34th pick is idiotic.
