  1. If JR, who, according to Forbes made $66 million with the White Sox last year, and has often said his only goal was to break even, shared that profit with players and White Sox employees, you may have a point.

  2. I'm guessing culinary tourism isn't a thing there in Kansas. How about dropping the Greg trolling act and register a different user name and start over? Isn't playing a country bumpkin getting tiring?

  3. It's not frustrating at all. This was never going to be some free agent signing frenzy that for some reason people thought it would be. They have until Aug 1 to sign players. There is no rush. The only players signed are sr signs and a couple dumbass high schoolers. Fear not. They will sign guys you've never heard of and will never hear from again.

  4. Some of you must have sore backs carrying water for the owners. There is so much supposition on this thread, without having any facts in evidence. We all want to have MLB on TV this year. But I can't feature the socialization of losses for a group of @ssh0les that have all the advantages that MLB owners have. Carry on, then...

  5. The owners acknowledge they would be losing even more if they don’t play. The players are the ones taking health risks. Many businesses gave their employees taking these risks, more money. Owners won’t show their books, showing they can barely make a profit.. Asking the players to take even a bigger pay cut is crazy.

  6. Every time the players negotiated fewer games, they negotiated less pay. They started at 114, then 89. Each time that's a paycut for the players, they just want prorated pay for each game. MLB makes hand over fist money, irregardless of fans (see the above link), and KBO getting fans shows just how starved for content people were. Instead, the owners made the exact same offer every single time. They wanted as few as games as possible, or if they wanted more games, to pay the same amount. MLB has a legal monopoly, they strong arm cities into giving them taxpayer funded stadiums, pay minor leaguers poverty wages, and won't even prove that they'll lose money this season. They agreed to a deal with the players and are upset that they have to honor that deal.

  8. Then they should go to a JC. If they're good enough to sign with a pro organization they are obviously good enough to get a full scholarship from a D1 or D2 JC. Then they can figure out where to go from there rather then selling themselves off for cheap. They're going to report, take their physical and get sent home. They have a much better chance of having a fall and spring season in college than they do in pro ball. But there's a bigger reason why they shouldn't sign. The team they are signing with now has no commitment in them. MLB is going to cap how many minor leaguers an organization can have and when cutting time comes for the new draft picks and international signees guess who's at the top of the chopping block? The guys they didn't use a draft pick on and only have a $20k invested. The organization has no skin in the game. These HS guys signing as UFA are getting horrible advice and MLB and their agents should be ashamed of themselves.

  9. The biggest issue is the mistrust due to years of bad behavior from ownership. They should have been able to put everything aside and work out an agreement that makes sense for 2020. The problem is that neither side trusts the other and they're both trying to make decisions now that won't be used against them in 2021 during those labor talks.
    2 points
  10. But the players were willing to give the owners expanded playoffs to increase the revenue for ownership. That just wasn't good enough for ownership.

  11. Situations change. They couldn't start in March, so a new decision had to be made. It's billionaires fighting with millionaires over the money they receive from fans who can barely afford going to a game. And the thousandaires will pick sides? They both are to blame. Remember whose money it begins with that they are fighting over. Both sides are screwing over the fans.

  12. I have been a fan for a long time, but guess what MLB? My life has gone on without baseball. And the longer this stuff goes, the more we will get used to it. You will still have fans rushing back to the park when play finally resumes, but some others will still stay away. They still have not learned from history.

  13. https://www.yelp.com/search?cflt=buffets&find_loc=Lawrence%2C+KS Since Greg has been on an anti-China crusade these days, that might wipe out approximately 1/3rd of his buffet options. Golden Corral occupying #6 and #11. Italian sounds good! https://www.politico.com/news/2020/06/14/missing-data-veils-coronavirus-damage-to-minority-communities-316198 The coronavirus’ brutal impact on African Americans and other minorities may never be fully known because of consistent gaps in gathering data on race and ethnicity that persist more than four months into the pandemic. Despite rising pressure on the Trump administration to fix the data deficits, 52% of reported coronavirus cases in the U.S. are still missing information on race or ethnicity. Recent federal guidance on gathering more of that data through testing won’t start until August.

  14. e peaceful protests and the unpeaceful ones are the biggest reason for the spike and the governors offend me by never mentioning it or even acknowledging it. Sure, do that...as long as you test everyone in the US who protested at state capitols and all those who reopened businesses before CDC guidelines. Well, that’s just part of the problem, because those guidelines were never given a punishment mechanism to underpin them. What about all the police officers and National Guard/military police who refused to wear masks sheerly for political reasons? And when they do get a vaccine, watch the GOP governors run for the hills in terms of mandated vaccinations in order for students to return to schools (when it does become readily available.) Of course, they (anti-vaxxers) still demand government programs/subsidies despite their continued willingness to endanger the lives of so many others, so please make sure they don’t receive waivers of liability in the future.

  15. Demands? That deserves a chuckle. I've never made any demands on here. I just happen to think the peaceful protests and the unpeaceful ones are the biggest reason for the spike and the governors offend me by never mentioning it or even acknowledging it.

  16. You have never engaged in an honest and open discussion. You have never acknowledged anything despite all of your pretending to not understand things that just happened to all fall along a single partisan line. If you ever want to drop the dumb greg act there are plenty of people who will engage you in an open and honest exchange. Until then don't come in here and demand satisfaction on some point while pretending to have been a full intellectual participant in this discussion. The day you drop the greg act, and actually act like the real person you actually are people will treat you with a real level of respect again. Until then, take your demands and stick them with the rest of the trash.

  20. Let there be issues. There was going to be a fight anyway. The owners could have made it a bit better by actually taking some risk here.Caving to ownership isn’t a solid strategy, especially when they won’t prove their claims. If the person or corporation owning the place you work said we didn’t make any money this month, next month looks bad, in fact the next year looks not so hot, we I’ll pay you 1/3 of your salary to work 1/2 the time, I am sure they would be tickled you understood and were on board covering for them. I am guessing most of your colleagues would flee.

  22. Well it's already underway right now in any part of the country that has largely "re-opened". I can't see how Arizona and Florida and a few other spots aren't in full crisis mode by early July, and Texas a few weeks later as their hospitals overflow. But that illustrates another problem... The players are the ones who are putting themselves most at risk by having to travel and be out of any quarantine during this. So, they're not only having to take a paycut on their normal rate, they're also being asked to take a paycut under hazardous conditions.

  23. This could happen right now with no new agreement.
    1 point
  24. No, they want the principle that the players will have their salaries limited/slashed based on revenue to be established. The players already agreed to fewer regular season games and MLB could set the number of games right now. The players already agreed to fewer regular season games and a lower share of their full salaries accordingly.
    1 point
  25. Because they are being assholes and fear their playoffs will be canceled. They want a quick season to get to the playoff money faster.
    1 point
  26. This is why it isn't good faith. The Owners have an agreement in hand saying the players will play for their full salaries pro-rated to the number of games in the regular season. The agreement says the 2 sides will bargain in good faith if the economics don't work. The players say "We will allow you extra playoff revenue in exchange for extra games at the agreed rate". The owners say "No. You must accept pay cuts under any circumstances we will offer". So the players are willing to give the owners extra revenue to help their economics, but the owners are not willing to give the players extra games in exchange for the extra revenue. If the owners can break even at 50 games and a full playoffs, where is the offer of 65 games, expanded playoffs, and full pro-rated salaries? Why haven't they made that offer?
    1 point
  27. Correct. The mlbs own lawyers clearly acknowledged that the players interpretation is correct.

  28. Some of these guys don't want to go to school. If they can afford it, get yourself in an organization now. The team can pay for your college later. It makes sense for certain guys. School isn't for everyone.

  29. I don’t se show you came to that conclusion, but the owners will get rolled in arb as it seems pretty clear the March agreement did not have language that explicitly supports the owners position. I think the theory that manfred misrepresented the March agreement to the owners and its ability to force renegotiations and has been trying to fix that mistake since.

  30. The owners could solidify all of their points by simply opening their books.

  31. I have already seen some teams have come out and announced they will only sign 5 - 10 players max. I believe the Marlins were one. On the opposite end of the spectrum the Royals are going shopping. Signing as many as they can. I gotta think the Sox are in that category too.

    1 point
  34. Absolutely. Based on what I’ve read I’m glad I’ve finally stopped thinking of the owners as simply these rich billionaires. It’s the whole organization of people, supplies and services. Why can’t the players just play for way less this year?
    1 point
  35. Could be the case but ets look at facts. Everything that came out of the union was "we are only going to play at full prorated salary, we are not taking further paycuts. " at one point one of the owners proposal was for 80% of prorated with playoffs and 70% without playoffs. So there was an off of a 20% cut. Obviously the players didnt think that was worth having a discussion.

  36. Players: We know were going to make $20, but we'll take $10. Owners: How about $5? Players: No Owners: 50% of $10? Players: No Owners: 50% of $20, but that percentage only comes out of half of the $20. Players: No Owners: Why are you negotiating in bad faith???

  37. Sadly I don’t see the Sox getting that many free agents in this set up. Most likely guys will either go to rebuilding teams where they have a better chance of moving through the system or the big name teams like the Yankees or Red Sox.

I just wish people were fair and blamed all factors. For some reason the protestors get a pass. Just be fair and blame all factors please. I'll probably never get to eat a delicious buffet again because of this. And I'd like to blame a whole lot of people not just certain folks.

  46. I absolutely love this draft. They hauled in 2 of the best arms in the draft. I love it. I would trade my 2nd 3rd and 4th picks for another top 15 pick every time. And the great thing about the MLB draft, is that you don't even need a trade partner, just a willing player. In a way it is similar to what they did last year, except they traded for basically 2 second round picks. I love it. Get as much high end talent as possible.

  47. I'm not a big fan of any physically mature high schoolers. The advantage they have over their less developed peers make them a tough evaluation imo. I want nothing to do with high schoolers throwing 99. That's peak velocity way too young. I'd prefer guys who grow into velocity, and develop as they age. Being fully developed at a young age is a turn off for me. It's easier to look great when your physically further along. It's one reason I liked Howard a lot. Still plenty to grow into but even though he was smaller he was still dominating older kids when he was young.
