2024 Official Draft Thread - Day 2
Who exactly have they drafted that was ranked much higher than the draft position, such that they warrant overslot, for which punting is required? Or perhaps that player has yet to be drafted.

Well this guy should be right up the Sox' alley.

Crochet wants an extension to pitch in the playoffs
Robert hasn't gotten it all together, yet still has an OPS >.800, 11/11 in Steals and 10 HRs. He's a major talent. Some team has got to bite. One player that hasn't been mentioned much that I would like the Sox to get is the player we should have drafted last year: Bradfield. I know he's no cinch to make it, but boy the team could use more speed and athleticism.

From what I read, his swing needs a lot of work. Also pulls everything.

Because he was in the bullpen until Getz came along.

At least it breaks up non-stop "Getz sucks" And frankly, while he's made a bunch of questionable moves, Crochet and Fedde brought a lot more good than the others caused harm.

Given the reaction for our acquisition of a 5 8 OF, I can't imagine the reaction with 5 5.5 Caldwell.

It's like they punted round 1; or semi-punted. They have the geekiest Pres of Ops.

This doesn't scream out "Shirley" to me; it screams "Safe pick" because we're pretty good with lefties. Last year was the "safe pick" type to, although he's not looking so safe. Anyway, no need to force position players in later rounds; if the value is with the high school pitchers, do what you need to do.

2024 Official Draft Thread - Day 1
He's kind of put himself into a box. He really needs to trade these guys for the best packages he can get regardless of whether they pitch or hit. Now, the prospects are narrowed, unless he is adept enough to bring 3rd teams in who want pitching prospects and have hitting prospects the Sox like. Seattle's top 10 prospects are all position players; I hope they want Robert.

What's so great about Jones other than the Yankees saying he's "untouchable". Late first round pick, blah minor league numbers, high Ks.

Good gracious. Smartest guys in the room. The absolute last of the possibilities i wanted the Sox to draft. Lord I hope I'm wrong about Smith.

So it looks like a choice between Weatherholt and Griffin for us, I guess.

He's a young guy. He can learn both. He's more valuable as a RF - get some value out of his arm.

7/14 - Pittsburgh @ White Sox - 1:10 pm, Keller v. Shuster
This team has 3 good players and the plan is to trade all 3. There are a few other okay players and they will be dispatched as well. Getz gets an F with the position player plugs that he brought in (Moldanado, Nicky Lopez etc.). This really had no long-term impact but it was impactful in making the 2024 team terrible. Nicky Lopez? Are you kdding? Mendick? He gets an F- for bullpen; he actually had veterans who have had a good season in his hands, and cut them for lesser pitchers. This cost the team trade pieces. Whoever in the org. thinks that Pedro Grifol is in any way competent gets no grade. That person needs to be banned from baseball. But, Getz gets an A+ for starting pitching: Crochet and Fedde. And frankly, in the long term, that way outweighs the first 2.

Crochet wants an extension to pitch in the playoffs
Grifol could have pulled him. But I'm sure he'll bring in the good relievers now that the game's out of reach. And like clockwork he did: NOW he brings in Brebbia. it's ridiculous to let this fool manage this team.

2024 - MLB Draft Thread
I've got to think Griffin is an undereslot situation, especially if one of the big 4 college hitters is still there. IF they can float William Schmidt down to their #2 spot, it could work.

Crochet Trade Updates (Nightengale)
The Orioles have 3 top 30 prospects that they, understandably, don't want to move. No one does. But that's it for the top 100 in Birdland. We could do a volume trade with them but it would take 3 or 4 of their 4-8s. But really, these lists are so fluid that I just hope that the Sox are really just scouting these players and make a deal accordingly, regardless of what the lists say. Last year at this time, Diego Cartaya as the #14 prospect in baseball and Dodgers #2. Great headliner! One year later, he's unranked and Dodgers #7, and that's after the Dodgers moved several players on their 2023 list. DePaula was Dodgers #12 last year, behind of our very own #10 Nick Nastrini. Now he's Dodgers #2 and #64 in baseball.

Hunter Harvey to Royals
I think I understand fine. If you are paying more than the slot value of your draft position, you have to make it up by either a) paying underslot on later picks (aka punting) or b) pay a tax. And I’m not sure the extent which b) is allowed. The nationals just got an extra pick which has its own slot value. If they want to use that slot value to pay over slot in round one, that’s fine; but they will still have to make up for it by going under slot somewhere later in the draft, whether it’s the extra comp pick they got or a different pick. The extra pic may make it cognitively easier, but they still have to punt something

Hunter Harvey to Royals
Well the Nationals would have to throw away a pick to do that, just like the teams that passed on him could have done if they chose to. There is some cognitive dissonance aspect as it may not feel like you're throwing away a pick due to the way you acquired it and feeling like it's kind of a "bonus pick." Anyway, unless it's a really stacked draft, I think a college player would be nuts to do that.
