QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 02:14 PM) I hope Hahn pulls some magic out and signs Quintana to a nice contract. Do we have to spend any money to rid ourselves of Buddy Bell ?

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 12:16 PM) I still think it's in the DNA of the Yankees and the Rangers to make a move today. Whether it's Rios... we'll have to see. If the Rangers don't make a move they are essentially good with not winning this year.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 09:44 AM) Because no one in their right mind considers Peavy's contract a bad one. And they took it on by giving up a guy with a career .622 OPS...in the minors and nothing else of value. Really great deal for them. It's going to very tough for someone to top what they did. If it was really as good as you hyberbolized more teams would have been willing to take it on and that was not the case. Everyone else wanted Sox to pay part of it. Lots of contenders this year not exactly with the highest payrolls and they valued that more than Peavy's salary and the prospects they would have to give up get him. Surprising number of teams willing to stand pat even valuing their prospects over winning now. So it seems when everyone was saying it's a sellers market and I was saying it's a buyers market, the buyers are winning atm.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 07:23 AM) Was hoping Hahn could do a little better in his first big deal as a GM. The Sox pick up another "toolsy" OF to go with the masses they have been stockpiling. This one appears to actually have a shot at the majors since he has had a little success, but the jury is still out. The biggest holes in the system are at the IF corners, and this deal does nothing to address that. Instead of chasing down a ML ready bat, he should have taken a few players that were further away. We will need to see what he is able to do with his other chips, as Garcia seems like he could be ready to step in if Hahn is able to deal Rios. The other pieces the Sox picked up look like bullpen guys and a UT infielder. The other problem is that it made two teams that you are trying to catch better. The Tigers have their SS of the foreseeable future with Iglesias who is cost controlled and elite defensively. Hitting .330 this season shows he can hit at least enough to stay in the lineup. We will see what else Hahn is able to do, but in a vacuum, I feel he should have done better. This is the kind of analysis you see most and it makes no mention of $20,000,0000.00 .

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 05:46 AM) Brian Anderson and Chris Young were athletic, toolsy outfielders who didn't live up to their potential once they got to the bigs. I still don't get it though ? Does anybody want outfielders to be slow fat with no arms ? OK thats extreme how about 5'10- 6-1 and 175-210 lbs ? With avg speed ? I mean you have to have outfielders in the minors right ? Isn't the requirement of the position mean you should be toolsy ? Should be fast ? Should be athletic ? What is Trout , McCutheon ,Ken Griffey Jr , Mays, Mantle, Aaron if not toolsy ? Everyone sees Hahn say he's got 5 tools and thats all of a sudden a bad thing ? That makes him a non baseball player ? Face it K's in baseball are rising and already at an all time high . What about all the other outfielders the Sox had around that never made it are they any different ? A bust is a bust is a bust. Extra speed and a plus arm doesn't mean you're going to bust ,same as avg speed and baseball savvy. But if some one's going to be a superstar I'll take my chances with a big strong athletic guy any day of the year .

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jul 31, 2013 -> 02:38 AM) People are skeptical because this organization has been enamored with "toolsy" outfielders for years now and have yet to develop one. Obviously Garcia is his own animal here and needs to be judged as so but I definitely understand why people would be worried about acquiring a player like him. How many years is years ? Who before Mitchell ? I like Garcia , I like our what 12th ranked prospect just looked damn good in his start. And Erik Johnson is supposed to be better ? Sorry can't be upset today(yesterday).

QUOTE (HeGone7 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 10:44 PM) I think what he is getting at (and what isn't an unreasonable feeling to have) is as a Sox fan we have just witnessed yet another "toolsy" guy get brought into our system. This may in fact finally be the one who pans out, or at the least, plays some MLB level baseball. None of us know what the future holds for this kid, but we all do know that we've seen a dozen of these type guys come into the system under KW with the same type of hype. I think it is more or less frustration on the part of those unhappy because we have seen this type of player fail everytime so far. Personally, I'm excited. However, it would be nice to just get a "ballplayer" for a change instead of an athlete. Being that we weren't getting top 30 lock caliber players, you had to make a move for "lottery tickets" and I'd say he is one of the best ones out there. If he puts it together, time will tell. I will say that his swing to contact rate is scary. 22 years old or not, that needs to improve and soon. Sorry don't get what's wrong with toolsy . Some of the best baseball players of all time had many many tools. Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Mickey Mantle just to name a few. You're picking out a word like toolsy , before that it was grinder. It's catchy and easy to dismiss or joke about when those guys don't work out . What do you say about all the other minor leaguers who don't work out ? Many kids these days play multiple sports we're lucky the athletic ones chose baseball over football and basketball but don't hold it against them that they are big and fast and athletic or play football too.

I'm good with this . Has anyone mentioned Garcia went 5 for 11 in the ALCS with a double 3 ribbies and a steal ? Overall playoffs AVG. .261 4 ribbies at just over 21 yrs old ! I always get the sense here that a lot of guys on here are enamored of guys in the minors and the minute they hit the majors and don't immediately tear the world apart they lose their luster. Garcia is so much better than many of the guys mentioned in the past few days. Very high upside like batting champ, 30HR potential 25 stolen bases and a cannon for an arm equally as good if not better than Vicideo's. He's barely 22 and has MLB playoff experience and done well to boot. 3 low level prospects and another $20 mill to play with.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 05:53 PM) If Michael Bourn is so fast that Alexei Ramirez, who has one of the best arms of any SS in baseball, can't set up short LF and either cut off the ball and throw to 2nd (he would have had the 3rd out there before Bourne would have been able to score, anyway) or let it go through, they might as well just give up trying to play baseball this season. Not if Swisher was caught in rundown . I really don't think it was played poorly .
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 05:46 PM) Why would Ramirez not be lined up to cut the throw and go to 2nd with the play? They had no shot at the runner going home. Throwing to 3B makes even LESS sense with Bourn (as you say) going there on a hit and run. Konerko's first infield single in years, lol. Ask Ramirez ? He cut it off by third. So at least it's not Viciedo's fault so you can make up your mind later since now you seem to be switching the blame to Alexei .

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 05:40 PM) How does Rienzo's stuff look? Good curve big curve. The kind umps have trouble calling strikes on.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 05:39 PM) The trail runner on the previous hit should have been held at 1st. Viciedo tried to get the runner at 3rd and once again missed the cutoff man with his throw. How would foolishly trying to cut down the runner there and allowing the trail runner to come into 2nd prevent the run scoring, pray tell? It was a hit and run , Bourne was making it to 3rd easily. Not sure why the throw went there. Maybe thats where they wanted it but Viciedo was not trying to get the runner.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 30, 2013 -> 04:40 PM) How's Rienzo's stuff look? Getting his pitches up a bit. He'll get murdered if he keeps that up.
