It was a cute column, nothing scientific about it. It was more a comment on everyone's mood.

ESPN just reported
Wow, I gotta say I am surprised. He went from 5th starter to possibly AAA and off of the 40 man roster. I wonder if anyone will claim him?

Chicago's Japanese Community
QUOTE(mreye @ Jan 28, 2005 -> 01:42 PM) http://www.cityrating.com/citystats.asp?ci...hicago&state=IL Does it break down "Asian" at all? That would include Japanese, Chinese, Korean etc.

Chicago's Japanese Community
QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jan 28, 2005 -> 01:31 PM) Yeah, that's exactly what I was getting at. I didn't really see a big turnout last year for Shingo. I know on the coasts, especially out west, Japanese players add to the attendance big time. I'd be curious to see some cencus stats. I think being an everyday position player has a chance to push attentence much more than a relief pitcher does. Especially since you have to factor in that Shingo was barely used in April and really took a while to win the closers role. I think Iguchi will provide a daily presence that will make the opportunity to see a Japanese player everyday, much more likely.

Comparing the 2005 team
QUOTE(Yossarian @ Jan 28, 2005 -> 11:57 AM) I'm not so sold on the starting rotation. MB and Garcia should be solid. El Duque will be fine if he's healthy but is he? Contreras has been "inconsistent" to put it mildly and we've all been over the enigma of Jon Garland a million times. I like the bullpen. I'm not convinced about the rotation, but give KW credit for going out and getting El Duque. Actually looking back on the 1983 rotation was kind of interesting. I looked at their careers and 1982's and it was kind of interesting. Hoyt pretty much carried the same numbers from 82-83 and obviously got a big bounce from the offense. Bannister was pretty steady from year to year. Burns had a big improvement from 82 to 83. And when you look at some of his other years, he was wildly inconsistant, going from eras of 2 1/2 to 4 to 3 1/2 to 5. Dotson had a huge improvement from 82 to 83. Koosman actually had a bad 1983. So what I am saying is that their pitching staff looked to have some questions going into the season as well. They even had one of their starters ERA go up by a run over the prior season. Two of the guys were pretty much steady. Then they had two big improvements. I think the similarities are more apt looking at the starters now.

NHL Lockout over?
QUOTE(winodj @ Jan 28, 2005 -> 10:01 AM) The players caved 90%. The money hungry children are the ones keeping the lockout going... and those would be the owners. I about fainted when I saw the players proposal. A 24% reduction is salary is just incredible. That's more than the airlines who are hemoraging billions of dollars a year could get out of their unions, but because it doesn't offer "cost certianty" they won't listen. How about this for cost certianty, don't spend more than you make?

It's a Trend
QUOTE(Texsox @ Jan 28, 2005 -> 09:44 AM) Which is why I'm guessing it has been done before, and I wouldn't be surprised if it reached back to Kennedy or before. If the Department took ads out in major newspapers and on various talk shows to promote the policy initiative, would that have been ok in your eyes? I am leaning towards yes. The administration also has access to all the talk shows and Sunday morning news magazines. For programs, I am solidly in favor of the government spending money to promote the program. What good is a program if no one knows it exists? I have no problem with it, as long as they are making it obvious that they are presenting the opinion. Then people know who it is and can process it for FWIW to make their own opinions. It is much different to pay someone else off to do to the samething and not tell someone why they are supporting something.

Top 10 Most Improved Teams Of 2005
QUOTE(Cali @ Jan 27, 2005 -> 06:52 PM) Good. I prefer that the Sox keep the KW mentality of being "Under the Radar", no one will give them any attention, and they'll (hopefully) come out of nowhere and surprise the "experts". And I hope all of this stuff gives the Sox a chip on their shoulder. I hope everyone of these articles ends up on a bulletin board in the clubhouse, and they use it to go out and whip some ass.

Its conflict on interest on one side, and at least unethical if not illegal on the otherside. The sad thing is I am surprised it took this long to come out.
