  1. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 05:46 PM) He has fanned at least 10 seven times in his career, and 5 of his last 9 starts. His ascent to ace is happening. What will be interesting is what their plans are for him. 4 years of control after this year. Next year is a throw away, a lot will have to go right for 2019 to be close to the same. Do they trade him for prospects? If the ascent to ace is happening, that would greatly speed up the rebuilding efforts. The pitching staff could very well be ready for the most part by 2019. Either way, this would be a great problem for us to have. In a perfect world Hahn finds a way to extend Rodon this offseason, although that's obviously a huge long-shot.

  3. QUOTE (harkness @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 11:26 AM) engel is great defensively.. but I'm troubled by the fact that he can't hit a fast ball down the middle of the plate. I don't think Engel ever figures it out offensively and I would definitely play Luery over him in CF next year. And I honestly think Willy, Delmonico, & Cordell all deserve playing time over him in LF as well. Best case scenario IMO is Engel hits enough to be a solid 4th OF.
  4. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 11:00 AM) Hansen and dunning should both be major league ready after two more full seasons in the minors. Surprised everyone is so quick to give up on Adams and not include him in the pricing staff. He's only 21 years old and pitching in AA. Considering he might still have some growth and projection left in him I feel he is a prospect to watch. Here's the problem. I fully expect Lopez & Giolito to be in the rotation to start next year along with Rodon. At some point, Kopech will force his way into rotation as well. Assumes all goes well (unlikely I know), that basically leaves one spot for Adams, Stephens, or Guerrero for 2018/2019 before Hansen & Dunning start pushing for spots. I think Adams will end up being a quality #4 starter, but it might not be with us. He'll need to grab any opportunity presented and run with it or else some of the higher ceiling guys will take his spot.
  5. QUOTE (Quin @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 10:41 AM) Gillaspie it all depends on whether or not you believe he's a fluke. Delmonico's biggest knock (by far) is his defense. Multiple positions is a misnomer - his play in LF the other night was amazingly awful. The problems I have with Gillaspie are that he's a poor athlete, a below average defender at 1B, and lacks bat speed. The batting eye is obviously plus and apparently he's got significant raw power, but if that doesn't translate to in-game power he's a dime a dozen 1B/DH at best. I'm not giving up on him just yet and was ecstatic to get him in return for Jennings, but I view him as someone whose stock is signicantly down and will need to prove himself all over again.
  6. Great list. My two biggest complaints are Gillaspie being too high and not including Delmonico. I get that Gillaspie was a top 100 guy for Baseball America last year, but honestly I'm not sure that was warranted based on the scouting reports I've read. I really think he should be in the low to mid 20's after guys like Burdi, Fulmer, Guerrero, Adolfo, & Basabe. And I think Nicky should be in that range as well. He's a much better athlete than Gillaspie, has the ability to play multiple positions (although poorly at this point), and is actually having a solid season. I probably like Nicky's chances of becoming a regular better than Gillaspie's at this point and he also has the floor of useful bat off the bench.

  8. QUOTE (Lillian @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 07:22 AM) Bringing this discussion back to the 2018 Draft; I'm leaning toward Singer or Kumar Rocker, with our pick. By adding that one more top of the rotation starter, the future staff isn't going to need all that much offense. I personally think we get diminishing returns with more pitching. We already have a glut of starters in the pipeline and adding another high end one means someone like Hansen or Giolito loses a potential opportunity. Now, if Singer is hands down the best player, by all means take him, but if it's close I'd definitely lean position player. An elite SS prospect like Turang would be a huge get for the system and provide us with a potential impact player a few years into our competive window.
  9. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 07:05 AM) Donaldson's been hurt for most of this season and has less than 15 homers, despite Sox pitchers helping quite a bit...he's either the greatest "buy low" candidate at age 32-36, or a disaster in waiting, along the lines of Dunn and LaRoche at similar ages. We actually haven't had much luck with vets in this age range since 2003-2005, unless you also want to consider Thome a net success. Still, longer than a decade. I'll see how he does in 2018, but assuming the production is there, I'd be willing to go multiple years with him. The beauty of Donaldson is his production can fall off a bit and he can still be a quality hitter. Even in a down year, he'd be around the 45th best hitter based on wRC+. And we'd have the luxury of moving him to 1B if his defense starting slipping. And let's not compare Donaldson to Dunn or LaRoche as Josh is an elite, well-rounded hitter.
  10. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 5, 2017 -> 05:50 AM) Arenado's going to get paid the GDP of Aruba by someone... What are the reports on Burger's defense so far? Looks like three errors in 21 games, that's not bad at all for those levels. We're going to have a ton of money to spend, so why can't it be us? The future roster I proposed had 18 pre-arb players, with no massive salaries to speak of other than Arenado. Also, Machado & Donaldson are both free agents the year before, so that will knock two big spenders off the list (although I think we'll be active with those guys as well). Honestly, there are only so many spots to address and 3B seems like the best bet today based on our current needs and the potential options that should be available in the coming years.
  11. QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 4, 2017 -> 11:24 PM) Only 2 more seasons of team control for Profar. This is why you pass on Profar. And we're overflowing with fringe OF prospects who age-wise could be part of the future core, no reason waste playing time on the 29 year old Brown.
  12. 2020 Lineup 1. Robert, CF 2. Moncada#, 2B 3. Jimenez, RF 4. Arenado, 3B (FA) 5. Abreu, DH 6. Collins*, C 7. Burger, 1B 8. Rutherford*, LF 9. 13. QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 4, 2017 -> 05:11 PM) James Fegan posted a lot of good vids for WSalem yesterday. Also made mention Collins said he was trying to fix the hitch but ditched it during season and will make adjustments in offseason. Honestly, I thought he'd address the hitch this offseason, so glad to hear that's actually the case. I still have high hopes for Collins now that it seems like he just might sick at catcher.

  15. I'm watching, hopefully Nicky D jacks one here.
  16. QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Aug 1, 2017 -> 03:58 PM) Kopech, Hansen and Dunning are all in the top 12 of all minor league pitchers in strikeouts this season. IMO, by year-end Kopech should be the #1 pitching prospect in the game with Hansen around 50th overall & Dunning in the 75 to 100 range. Nothing wrong with dominating high A ball in your first full professional season.
  17. I enjoy these walk-off wins, but we aren't going to get that #1 pick if Matt Davidson has any say.
  18. QUOTE (BlackSox13 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 09:49 PM) Works for me. Who do you think goes to WS if/when Jimenez goes to Birmingham? I'm leaning towards Adolfo. I would hope Call. He started the season at Winston-Salem and that's where he should finish. Plus Adolfo's K rate is still above 30% and I don't think promoting him will help in that area. What's really going to be interesting is how they address the OF logjam next year. Call, Fisher, Basabe, Rutherford, Adolfo, & arguably Robert & Gonzalez should all start next year in high A. They'll probably ease Robert into full-season ball by sending him to Kannapolis, but that still leaves six potential OFs for W-S and that doesn't even include interesting but fringier guys in Booker & Schnurbusch. They'll probably have to push Fisher and either Call (more likely) or Basabe (less likely) to AA to create enough playing time for everyone. Good problem to have I guess.
  19. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 05:09 PM) I mean, I guess we haven't seen much of Tilson (2 PAs!), but his game has never excited me much. He doesn't excite me either, but if somehow he & Engel are your best two options for LF & CF, then it should hands down be Engel in CF & Tilson in LF.
  20. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 03:43 PM) Sox trade Sanchez, Leury, Saladino and Avi over the offseason. C Navarez 1B Abreu 2B Moncada SS Anderson 3B Davidson RF Wily Garcia CF Tilson LF Engel DH Delmonico/FA UT - Cordrell UT - Hanson C - Smith BE - Ashe SP Rodon SP FA - one year deal SP Shields SP Lopez SP Holmberg/Giolito CP - Fulmer SU - Jones RP - Bummer RP - Petricka RP - Beck RP - FA LHRP SW - Danish/Holmberg Why would you ever start Tilson in CF over Engel? I don't get the Tilson love to begin with, but Engel is an awesome defensive CF and Tilson isn't.
  21. I thought you could only send one player below AA. Is that still true? Also, are there any restrictions preventing a player participating multiple times? I know Jimenez, Collins, & Kopech all attended last year, so not sure if they're eligible again or not.
  22. What was the point of Jorah getting gray-scale if he simply runs right back to Dany? There's got to be some reason to send him to Oldtown and/or meet Sam. Also pretty crazy that Dorne & the Tyrells are completely out of the picture now. Seemed kind of rushed to me TBH. If the end game is really Starks + Targs vs. Lannisters before the ultimate war against the White Walkers, then I hope GRRM finds a more interesting way to get there. There's way more going on in the books right now and getting to this ultimate showdown between the main families can't be as simple as the show made it.
  23. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 08:25 AM) Definitely Gonzo. I'll say Holland as a PTBNL or cash considerations type (maybe even after the deadline on the waiver wire). I think Clippard stays the rest of the year. I think someone takes Holland and tries him as a LOOGY. Clippard you might as well pitch through August and hope some team has an injury and maybe Clippard has shown something by then. Long-shot I know, but otherwise he can just be another body in the pen and obviously we need some of those.
  24. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 31, 2017 -> 08:12 AM) Should Pelfrey be included? He has been solid this season but probably worthless since he hasn't been in the pen all season and that is probably where he would provide any sort of worth I don't think he'd have much value if any to a contending club for the reasons you mentioned, but he could be an important piece for us down the stretch to soak up innings. If we somehow trade both Gonzalez & Holland, we're going to need some bodies who can multiple innings even if we call Lopez & possibly Giolito and Pelfrey makes sense as one of those guys.
