Hendriks now to IL with Right Forearm Strain

So the team that had the best closer in baseball, possibly knew he was living on borrowed time, goes out at the trade deadline and gets the second best closer as insurance. Brilliant if the second best wasn't a complete bust.

How Hahn keeps his job?

Masahiro Tanaka is the one k can think of that rehabbed a partially torn ligament rather than going for surgery and never hurt it worse.

Sale had a forearm strain in 2012 and it took a full 7 years before TJS, that’s not bad either.

Didn't they briefly make him a closer because of this?

Three week injury and we didn't put him on the IL three days earlier to help the bullpen?

Anytime the dreaded forearm strain happens I feel like there's a Kubler-Ross 5 stages of grief process both the pitcher and the organization have to go through.  Resulting in a slow drip of progressively worse prognoses and timelines with the final step being the phone call to Dr. James Andrews.

You do realize that Sousa was also warming up, right?

Instead he went with Hendriks with 5 run lead to save Sousa for a high leverage spot on Saturday, which he failed, and the Sox lost.

It is pretty normal to use a closer in a low leverage spot if he has not pitched more than 2 days or so and there is no closing opportunity to keep him in a rhythm (usually it is about an every other game rhythm).

Hendriks hadn't pitched two days in a row so friday was just "time" for him to pitch again.

Thank God for Tony. Who else would have figured Lambert could close?

That's 10x worse than Rodon in the 2020 postseason. At least Renteria knew the quality was there and wanted to utilize it somehow.

If he said Matt Foster or Ruiz have shown flashes but not consistently...that would be one thing

As we know with Kimbrel, closing is totally different. Kimbrel sucked in the 7th similar to Lambert. Maybe with the added pressure of closing Lambert will be awesome.

Of course :lolhitting

Hopefully other teams will waste time prepping for multiple closers.

That's what is commonly done when the closer is ready to go. Otherwise he may not be available the next day anyway.

Yeah - pitching him in that situation is not a legitimate issue (unless that was like a 3rd straight game or he was already unavailable and TLR pushed him). Sitting him down and than bringing him in the next game would be worse, quite frankly.  This is not on TLR (unless he ignored advice or something else and put him in anyway).

Ptatc - Since I just associate this with Tommy John - how often do the two actually correlate or come together. Is it actually most of the time in these instances, rest is what the dr ordered and they can be fine or are we at this point just waiting until he ends up with TJS?

This injury is depressing as fuck.

For some reason, I’m kind of numb to this one even with the ominous prognosis that generally comes with forearm strains. Perhaps apathy. Losing Liam long term would likely be the kill shot.

Acceptance. We've reached the fifth stage.
