I hope the Sox make the right decision here and keep Cairo as the manager. He’s doing something that TLR didn’t do and the players seem to be responding to him. Even if they don’t make the playoffs, he’s got them competing and fighting. It’s refreshing to see this.

Literally the most exciting two weeks of Sox baseball this season and they are going to ruin by letting this absolute bum come back.  I'm not sure how anyone in the front office could honestly defend him managing again.  The team was dead in the water until he was forced out.  Now they are right back in it, just to get ruined by this clown insisting on starting Luery fucking Garcia every game down the stretch.  Awesome.

He's cleared to travel for the ceremony for Stewart tomorrow. He's not yet cleared to manage. The perfect "cover" is for him to attend the ceremony and then (citing unexpected fatigue) announce he's heading back to Arizona for further tests. He stays in Arizona for another week before they announce the joint decision of he and his doctors to stay at home through the end of the season. Hey......a kid can dream.

Pulling the rug out is a perfect description.  He will be back Tuesday. The press release makes the entire situation even more weird. His "doctors " couldn't monitor this from afar and give Chicago docs the tests they want to give him. No have this guy whose heart is on no shape to spend a few hours in the dugout fly to AZ. Now it's OK to fly to Oaland. No s%*#. It was OK to fly before.  Also to Chicago. He isn't flying to Chicago to eat deep dish.  But will somehow be cleared from afar.

Yeah. The whole “he’ll be joining the team on it flight back to chicago” bit is the dagger. Cannot believe they’re actually going to let him back in there dugout. Jerry is a fucking idiot.

They need to place him in the booth and let him “‘manage” from there. Like Bernstein said bring back the cardboard cut outs, make history by telling him he is going to be the first manager to coach from the booth and put him in a fake stadium with the cut outs and be done with him, his incoherent self won’t know the difference

Or, just tell the guy he has 2 options: 1) step away from the game for good for medical reasons; or 2) get publicly fired tomorrow. But rejoining the coaching staff isn’t an option. That’s what a well run organization would do. Alas..

This exactly what needs to happen!

Sadly the Sox and Jerry are the most dysfunctional organization in baseball.

If Jerry were smart he could use his buddy angle and tell Tony personally that he is doing this for his health. 

Rick Hahn and Kenny Williams need to grow some balls and sit down with Jerry and convince him no matter how brutal the conversation gets. 

My hope is that they are bringing him back to announce a change in person.

My fear is he had COVID and is now back full time in a few more days. 

If he comes back...fans riot. Simple as that or he will be back next season

If he's back Tuesday, there needs to significant booing for him, and loud fire Tony chants.  Fans cannot accept it.

The funny/ironic thing is that attending the Stewart Ceremony is almost the perfect indicator of the future awaiting Sox fans if someone who couldn't handle a GM-like role properly with the DBacks was for whatever reason given control of those decisions in Chicago almost a half decade later.

1. Making Tony La Russa Chief Baseball Officer (May 17, 2014)

It seemed a wise and popular option at the time, James Parziale of Fox Sports saying, "It's hard to view La Russa's presence in Arizona as anything but a huge win for the organization." But it was a radical departure from normal front-office structure, effectively creating an entirely new level for La Russa: it’s this at which (Derek/Derrick) Hall’s "too many cooks" (GEE, THAT DOESN'T SOUND REMOTELY FAMILIAR, NOW DOES IT???) comment seems aimed. It was also a position with which La Russa was inexperienced, having no front-office experience. While there’s no denying his managerial skills, after 33 years in the dugout and more MLB games than any other living person, what transpired shows they don’t necessarily translate to the front-office, any more than great players automatically become great managers.

#2. Hiring Dave Stewart (Sep 25, 2014)

Before this season, Stewart was asked about the PECOTA projections. "Think we only win 78 games? That’s a joke." Turned out the joke was on him, as the team fell nine games short of that mark. I never thought D-backs fans would look back on the Kevin Towers era with nostalgia. But for all his flaws (not least of which was a large mouth), Towers at least knew the role and how to handle the processes. In early 2015, Stewart reportedly "tried to make a trade with another team that would have violated MLB rules, and the GM of the other team had to explain to him that such a move was not allowed." Stewart’s lack of experience was painful, and often exploited.

 

#1 The Shelby Miller trade (Dec 9, 2015)

Really, Dave? A trade about which, for example, Yahoo’s Jeff Passan said at the same time, it "has a chance to go down as one of the worst trades of the last 25 years"? That’s doubling-down and going all in. Got to admire the guts there. The intelligence? Less so. Because if true, it demonstrates an abject failure to learn from mistakes (ideally, other people’s, but more importantly your own). Mind you, it could have been worse, considering there was discussion with the Marlins about Jose Fernandez; Miami wanted A.J. Pollock and Patrick Corbin. If subsequent events had all still occurred, that would have been quite the steal for the D-backs in 2016... Not so much, going forward.

It’s interesting to imagine an alternative timeline, where La Russa was not hired. It’s likely this would have led to someone other than Stewart taking over as GM, and in turn that makes #3-5 probably evaporate. Perhaps, say, the team goes with Mike Hazen as GM, two years earlier. Simply by not doing anything, never mind making any positive moves, the team would likely be little or no worse off in the standings, and would certainly have a much better future.

This is our best hope.  Hopefully he's just flying back to Chicago to gather his things, and we get an announcement from Tony today that the everyday grind is just too much for him at his advanced age.
