Jerry wouldn’t eat the money on Evan White.

I don’t think there is any eating money here. We are very likely to pay for a Marco Gonzalez esque pitcher in FA.

He’s a 1 year, $12 mill contract. His club option next year doesn’t even require a buy out.

its a real bummer as this is a perfect trade for a Getz to make.

But a hallmark of Reinsdorf Gms is extreme team building laziness. They are too obsessed with their own legislated team building pieces and systems and don’t just call and anticipate other orgs needs and difficulties.

I was specifically talking about Evan White, who’s owed $15M over the next 2 years (plus buyouts) and hasn’t even appeared in the MLB since 2021.

Gonzalez is a #5 except for that one fluky 2020, and getting worse and is paid a lot. Why would the Braves want anything to do with him?  Why would we want anything to do with him?

This is a salary dump.  But for a like us that needs innings and has nothing better to use the rotation spot, he could have been a good use of bad money for us assuming we got something else.

I’d take Kelenic as a throw-in.   Need an outfielder, he could improve.

And it’s a chance to right a wrong!

Kelenic is the main course here.  The Braves are effectively buying him from the Mariner’s to help their payroll situation.  You just rarely see trades like this and it’s rarer to have the team buying the player to be one with a super high payroll already.  If clubs are willing to make trades like this, the Sox should be all over it because we need some warm bodies as placeholders and desperately need more young talent in the org.

They SHOULD be. But we know they don't like taking back bad money.

Also $12 mil for a starting pitcher is not a lot.

Yeah this would have made sense for Sox.  Who would be the equivalent to the Braves players in our system?

Well Carlos Carlozo said Cole Phillips wasnt even a top 40 prospect in their BA update for the Braves. The KC prospect was good enough to get an injured Kyle Wright but has largely underwhelmed.

I'm gonna say Sean Burke and like Shane Murphy

The Sox handed Texas $1.25M in international slot money to avoid paying a $500K buyout on Wellington Castillo and an $1.25M buyout to Nate Jones in 2019. Shipped over $3M away during the prior two seasons.

The lengthy timetable for international prospect realization makes it easy to write off in an isolated year, but it’s a big-picture issue. The White Sox’ pre-rebuild farm rankings show how hard it is for a farm system to produce talent on a reliable basis when it abstains from meaningful international investment. If they’re trying to build a pipeline with one hand tied behind their back while handcuffing themselves in free agency, the math says they’re going to be short of hands when all of them are supposed to be on the deck.

I believe Hahn's last deal was prospects from LA for international slot money in early August. Hopefully Getz, Paddy and others can convince Jerry the fastest way to contention will be to accumulate as many prospects including International, as passible, and not limit the latter to older players defecting Cuba in their 20s.

But that's not actually eating money. International slot money is more "potential to spend." Not actual cash.

The difference this time is the Sox actually got bona fide players in return for the bonus $. Aldrin Batista looked good at Kanny and the reports on Maximo Martinez look pretty decent. Obviously, the Sox cash allowed LAD to sign a much more well-regarded prospect, but the Sox weren't going to get him anyway.

Yes, Jerry views it as a win win, since he doesn't pay the buyouts, and doesn't spend international money. Hoping the Getz and others can convince Jerry to prioritize maximizing their international prospect return versus saving relative pennies while missing out on the dollars saved by quality cost controlled players.

Agreed, they received prospects this time versus punting dead money. That said, if they can focus on drafting at least some teenage prospects they can get a higher upside versus buying older players that other teams passed on in their teens.

If the Sox are intent on getting a legit ready to play OF prospect in the Cease trade or giving Colas another shot after more development, then it wouldn't make sense at all to target Kelenic.

If they had gotten Kelenic from the M's, then they would just worry about trading for the best packages, without excluding positions. Opens up for more possibilities rather than saying "we need this guy because he plays OF."
