Benintendi, 31, might be all but impossible to move. He is owed the balance of his $16.5 million salary this season, $16.5 next season and $14.5 million in 2027. No longer a quality defender, he derives almost all of his value from his left-handed bat, which is right around league average. Robert, who turns 28 on Aug. 3, is somewhat more attractive, a plus defender in center who has stolen 21 bases in 26 attempts. But while batting .192 with six homers and a .581 OPS, he, too, holds only so much appeal. The White Sox would pay down his salaries to enhance their return.

Pick up a once highly regarded dude who can be rehabbed, and they'd parlay the low value Robert has to something a step or two up.

To continue your use of a simile…calling what’s happening to Robert a slump is like calling Mount Everest a small hill. Jerry will be $35M in the hole paying Robert to break out of his 2 year “slump” if his option is picked up. I have a hard time believing that will be an option

They have made this mistake already and I find it hard to believe they sign off on a $20M option for what has essentially been a .212 / .275 / .606 player over the last year. I would be stunned if they pick that option up.

June 23, 2025Jun 23 it is so astounding that this guy became one of the worst players in baseball while entering his prime. I'm sure some blame goes to him, but man. Every single one of that 2021 core became non mlb players by the time they hit 28. It makes no sense.
