Passan: Astros sign Imai

If the Sox signed Imai to this contract, they likely would have traded him at the deadline given the opt outs. Accumulating more prospects is fine, but it’s not like this is a straight 3 year deal.

I think this guy is going to struggle here, but even still id have no problem signing him. Our payroll is laughable.

I’m in the camp of getting a potentially very good player on your team is actually a good thing. Especially with the whole perpetual “beggars can’t be choosers” thing the Sox have going on.

That’s definitely a fair perspective. Would have been nice to get him in the building and start building a relationship. Oh well.

Or... hear me out. He's as good as his contract.

This place runs as follows. "OH we should sign this guy!"

"Oh we NEED this guy."

*signs with another team to completely reasonable contract*

"Phew, we really dodged a bullet boys. Glad Jerry didnt spend his money on this guy. Gotta save it for the next guy"

Rinse and repeat year after year.

This is true to some extent.  It is a very player friendly deal, but if you can still get one good year out of him if he truly does pan out and can still give him a qualifying offer and potentially get a draft pick, I don’t see the problem.  Now if he sucks, it could be a waste of up to $63 million.

My follow-up question would be, what free agent starters out there with the potential to be as good as Imai can be signed for similar money?

No doubt, they need to continue adding. I’d take Giolito or Littell as a consolation prize. Or maybe Kona Takahashi.

Well unless they are good with Cannon and Burke battling it out

@Chicago White Sox will be holding a wake at his house at 4 pm, if you want to pay your respects for the club's loss of Imai. Coffee and pastries will be provided.

Go look at the string of events and NBB’s replies.  He totally fell for this Japanese dude’s tweet and made up some BS that there was still some hope for the Sox to sign Imai in his hasty attempt at appearing to know something.  Then he realized that this dude was just referencing the original Yahoo Japan article and changed his tune 3 minutes later.  That is what happened.  NBB didn’t get any communications about the Sox and Imai at 12:45 AM on New Year’s Eve/Day when even Chris Getz is hitting a beer bong for cripe’s sake.

I did see those same tweets last night, but as I said he could have checked with his sources after article came out and did in fact had contacted Imai in the last 24 hrs, same way they did with Mune with his window closing. He likely then go more details on the terms Imai/Boras was looking for and that JR won’t likely go for those, then backtracking his original tweet.

There are ppl vouching for this guy so I would assume guys like Jimmy knows he has legit connections that he could reach out to even late on NYE.

Again, if I’m posing as an insider, I would be a much more interesting follow by fanning the smoke on a potential signing than squashing rumors from other outlets.

Classic Boras contract with all the opt outs.

Yeah, gotta make sure we save that money for Jerry's kids.

I think thats what they used to call the children who benefitted from Jerry Lewis hosting the Muscular Dystrophy Telethons for many years. Jerry's Kids was in the vernacular back then.

Just like with Murakami…

For those who need more confirmation that Moccbomb is a fraud, he reported Imai signed with the Cubs.

Yep there's zero way we were doing anything close to this as sad as that is to say.

Moving on....can anyone explain to me what the hell the Cubs are doing?

Sign Bregman, trade Shaw for pitching

I'd rather put 2 million into Pacific Rim scouting than burn 21 or so million per on a guy that is probably a 2 WAR SP. Certainly at this point of the rebuild. Not saying the Sox will do that, but this wouldn't have been a good deal for the Sox imo.

This deal wouldn’t make much sense for Sox. If he’s good, you basically signed him to a one year deal and paid his posting fee for his next team.

If I had to guess, Sox were ok with money and years but not the opt out after year 1.

Waiting for the teams in their division to get weaker.

Imai has a much higher floor than Murakami. Would have been very surprising if he fell to the Sox the same way.

You think Kona Takahashi is a possibility for the Sox?

But you’d also get a draft pick if you offer the QO so not a total waste if he left after a year.

Now that he signed maybe this will open up the SP market

I actually wouldn’t be surprised if they were in on him once he was looking for a shorter term, but bowed out once opt-outs came into play.

I mean his floor is he blows his arm out in ST and gets paid 63 million to pitch 100 innings for them. It's a pretty big gamble, a team like the Astros that has maybe one or two years left in their window sure, but the Sox? Eh, doesn't make much sense imo. Not with the opt outs taking any trade or surplus value upside away.

That sucks.

Kona Takahashi has the same deadline as Imai, so there should be news on that front soon too.

That sounds like a restaurant in Hawaii that serves great Japanese Polynesian fusion.

I mean if you put it that way, every players floor is “dies in plane accident tomorrow”
