I don't understand why Teel, who might have a smidgen of Italian blood, has to play for Team Italy. He's a freaking American. Team Italy should get Italian players to fill out their roster. I probably wouldn't publicly b**** about it if Teel did not get seriously hurt. But he did, and it was avoidable. I wonder just how much of his genetic make-up is Italian. Is it half? Is it 1/64th?What about Antonacci, who did not get hurt during the WBC? Is he Italian enough for you to have played for Team Italy or is he also American?
Tuesday at 01:50 PM2 days Somehow Oldsox busting out blood quantum isn't shocking to me.Like, I qualify for Italian citizenship because I have an unbroken line of Italian ancestry (with ancestors born in Italy). If I played ball, I could play for them based on that.Going by "blood," I'm at 50% through my mom. Any kid I would have would be 25% because my wife is German/Irish. He's trying to help grow baseball in the country where his family is from (which several Team Italy players stated) so that one day it is Team Italy instead of Team Italian Americans + A few Italians, Canadians and a Venezuelan.

Tuesday at 06:07 PM1 day Let's face it folks. the WBC isn't going anywhere. It's grown to be pretty successful and MLB wants to grow interest in the sport. So, what do people suggest be done going forward? That the White Sox prohibit any players from participating going forward? Doesn't seem plausible. Scrap the whole tournament because Teel missed several months due to injury? Not gonna happen.I'm not going to even waste time trying to explain why every player who was born in the USA isn't playing for Team A'murica. It's been discussed over and over and it's obvious that people just don't want to accept the rationale and will keep repeating the same complaint. Edited Tuesday at 08:03 PM1 day by 77 Hitmen

That seems like a non starter to me as it would also be in the middle of Japan and Korea's season. I think you just keep it as it is, big euro soccer clubs deal with international obligations all the time and it's just part of having good players that want to play for their country.

Tuesday at 06:58 PM1 day Personally, I don’t even get into the WBC that much. The part I really love about it is how much the players seem to enjoy it.And if the players (who clearly understand the risk involved) are that into it, who am I to say they shouldn’t be participating?

Tuesday at 07:14 PM1 day IMO, the entire concept of the WBC is flawed. Roman Anthony and other Americans with strong familial ties to other countries played for Team USA (LOL about Anthony). Recall that elimination game in Florida where there appeared to be more fans rooting for Venezuela. The WBC will probably go on, but a lot of MLB players should be reticent to participate. (and there are restrictions on insurance for injuries in their player contracts) Perhaps citizenship rules comparable to the Olympic games (players must be a national of the country they represent) should minimally be implemented. Otherwise the thing is a joke. I think there was some utility in allowing mlb players to express pride in their native country. However, in the current political climate, some people might not have even appreciated that. Edited Tuesday at 07:14 PM1 day by tray
Tuesday at 10:16 PM1 day The over/ under for Teel has now moved from June 1 to July 1. With it now being July 1, I still feel confident taking the over.

Yesterday at 01:09 PM1 day My biggest concern with the WBC is with pitchers. I think teams really need to continue to keep guard rails up on how they are used.
Yesterday at 01:28 PM1 day Interesting that Teel is traveling with the team now too. Vasil might have kicked the door down on that situation lol

Did the quick math before and it was one of those days.

And it seems like the evidence shows most people took the WBC seriously, not as a whimsical joke tournament. Looser rules for participation allow teams like Italy to field a competitive team. That helps grows interest in baseball in Europe, which is the whole point. Guys like Jac Caglionone and Vinnie Pasquintino actually saw spikes in Italian fan interest during the WBC.
