Now that the deadline has come to an end, I wanted to see how we would all grade the collective work of Getz and the front office. Below is a summary of the players added & subtracted from the organization:

Added:

  • Luis Castillo, SP (26 man)

  • Huascar Brazoban, SU (26 man)

  • Brenton Doyle, OF (26 man)

  • Joey Bart, C (26 man)

Subtracted:

  • Sir’Anthony Dominguez, MR (26 man)

  • Everson Pereira, OF (26 man)

  • Duncan Davitt, RHP (40 man)

  • Boston Smith, C (minors)

  • Gabe Davis, RHP (minors)

  • Mason Adams, RHP (minors)

  • Carlos Vielma, IF (minors)

  • Zach Franklin, RHP (minors)

  • Nolan Jones, OF (minors)

B. Got better overall.

D

C. They did get pitching help, but the position player trades were very underwhelming.

MLB trade deadline: Give Getz, White Sox a C+

Average return earns an average grade

Fine. Nothing earth-shattering but also nothing to work myself into a lather over. I like the Brazoban, Bart, and Castillo moves. The Doyle trade confuses me, but the player dev side has earned some runway.

Hope they are in a position to push more chips in next season, but I get why they didn't.

C. I would vote F but I’ll give them credit for not moving any of our higher rated prospects trying to chase this season.

Im not sure our active roster is any better than it was Friday. In fact the rotation and lineup may have gotten worse. So D. The bullpen looks stacked at least.

It’s so hard to give a grade when you aren’t a part of the conversations. Take the catcher position, for example. I wanted Stephenson, but he didn’t even move, which tells me the asking price was too high. I think if Getz traded for Stephenson, my grade for him would be even lower because of who he had to give up. But do I know that for sure? Of course not.

Bart very well could have been the best option without giving up too much. And if you upgrade a position of need in the best way possible, then that deserves an A. But it’s crazy to give an A for a Bart acquisition.

In summary, I have no clue how to grade it. Strictly in terms of how much better we got, I’d give it a C.

Seemed like a bit of an overpay on Castillo since we took his whole salary and gave cash and I'm worried about how many home runs he's been giving up.

The reliever seems like a nice move and the bullpen looks set for the most part.

Bart is an improvement.

The OF move is perplexing.

I guess a C

No rentals

Sox have to get innings and quality from Castillo.

Brazoban only player acquired that's a clear upgrade, can't regress

Bart upgrade defensively and offensively but only because Quero was so obscenely bad.

Doyle 28 older project but great defensively but added to clusterfuck of RHH OF which led to the Pereira DFA who despite his injuries had upside and a lot of service time left but no options .

Leaning a bit too much on age and coaching staff . C-

Just curious, does the no rentals hurt or help your grade?

While I love the surprise of how well this team is playing, this isn't a give up prospects kind of season. After decades of watching horrible overpaying and head scratching trades, this seemed more restrained, and forward looking.

I appreciate the willingness to take on a bad contract over giving away prospects. They showed a willingness to really dive in and be active.

I think it's a positive sign of the direction the franchise is moving. I don't believe there was a realistic blockbuster trade, and again, I wouldn't give up 2028 for 2026.

Process - A

Immediate Impact - B

Future upside - A if Castillo rebounds into a solid #2

It's more surplus value but that depends entirely on how they perform the rest of the season to know if they are viable options for 2027 and beyond.

Turning Castillo around can be the most likely strength but also the biggest bust.

Don't have much hope of Brazoban performing well into his late 30's or Bart being anything more than Teel's backup next year.

Doyle has to rebound also, maybe not this year, but definitely next year when he turns 29 in May. Otherwise he's just another AAAA guy.

I gave many of you a C. And, like some are pointing out, it was a seller's market. We have no idea what the price tag for a player like Deitmers or Stephenson was. Angels are the Angels and the Reds decided to compete. I can't even blame them for that, even though I think it's unlikely they make the playoffs.

Castillo trade was an overpay. Castillo for Dominguez straight up would probably have been fine. Starting pitching is a premium, and if you think you can fix him, it's a risk, but sure. To me, throwing in Boston Smith makes it an overpay, and yes, I'm sure I am overvaluing Boston Smith.

The best trade was the Mets trade. Getting a controllable reliever, even at 36 is a nice addition.

Joey Bart- Whatever. Maybe is a marginal plus addition, but man, it would be nice to make a move for a more substantial catcher.

What I am happy about is that we didn't move off of any of our true prospects for mid-tier additions. At this point, If we can just get into the dance- that's a great season for us. The work to become a perennial World Series contender needs to come in the off-season.

Couple of thoughts that go into my grading process.

All four players Getz acquired are controllable. Castillo & Bart each have one year of control left while Brazoban & Doyle each have three.

All major areas of need were addressed to some extent.

The pitching staff is stronger, but the question is how much. I think Castillo will be an upgrade over Fedde and absorb more innings, but he’ll need to fix some stuff to make those innings materially better than what Fedde has given us. We only added one SP which means our weakest link production wise stays in the rotation in Schultz. With Fedde now moving to the bullpen we probably see a lot of piggy-backing with him and Noah. That may help us address the innings issue down the stretch, but the lack of a more impactful SP additional could really leave us disadvantaged come playoff time.

Brazoban is an upgrade over Dominguez which means the bullpen is obviously stronger. The core six late to middle relief guys are strong. Richards & Fedde give us two long men to help out as guys wear down. McDougal & Hagen are still here and could be significant reinforcements come September & October. I feel really good about the status of this unit.

The addition of Bart is nothing crazy on paper, but is a massive improvement over Romo & Quero. Would have been great to get Stephenson but he didn’t even get traded, which suggests a high asking price. Ultimately, we got to hope that Teel comes back and some point, but Bart at least raises the floor.

I still can’t process this Doyle move. We effectively gave up three players to add him if you count the DFA’ing of Pereira. I get he had a nice season a few years back, but he hasn’t hit for s%*# recently (maybe injuries are a huge factor) and he is now Peters’ platoon partner against LHP. I want to give Fuller and the hitting group the benefit of the doubt here, but hard to expect to fix his swing or approach amidst a playoff push. The defense will help, but doesn’t erase my concerns with the bat.

In terms of what we gave up, I don’t have a ton of heartburn on the prospect cost. Gabe Davis was my highest rated prospect, who came in at 10th in my rankings three weeks ago. The difference between him and the next half dozen guys below him is very small. Like the ceiling but there is a ton of reliever risk so not overly concerned given the return. Adams & Smith were ranked 15th & 19th respectively, although Smith would have moved up quite a bit given his continued AA success. No one else was in my top 20 although Vielma is a kid who could get there in a couple of years. Losing Pereira does suck as I still believe in his talent if given enough runway.

All things considered, I’d give the Sox a C right now but will say the ranking could change dramatically based on what Castillo & Doyle. Ultimately we appear to be a bit stronger without giving any major prospects, but didn’t do enough to materially improve our post season chances. Maybe that’s the right call for year 1 of our competitive window, but would have loved to found a way to add a SP to slot into between Burke & Davis.

The Doyle move was a head scratcher at best so that brings it down to a C. B without that move

B. Curious to know why the well-respected fathom went with D. Think back to the days the Sox were 'good' before the tank job. Sox rarely made moves at the trade deadline. I feel like Getz truly is moneyball baby. Modern GM who makes moves.

Castillo deal was the most lopsided of the deadline. Sox gave a prospect of equal value to the other similar rentals but also threw in 25 million dollars.

Best move was a reliever when they supposedly stopped all their prospects to make them relievers.

oDoyle in fact does not rule. Even in his "return to form season" he had a 670 OPS away from Coors. Adding in the fact that we also lost Periera in the deal, it was a real stinker.

Bart was fine, but the fact we needed a catcher after the resources we spent to acquire two of them in the past few years wasnt good.

F.

Don’t get Romo still being on roster. Overall, happy Sox made some moves.

B

Some of the guys we really wanted didn't move and that tells you something about what these teams were asking for. We are better then we were when we started.

C

ODoyle and Castillo requiring significant improvement over current performance lessens their value considerably. I don’t mind a project but odd time to commit to a couple of them, especially ODoyle.

Periera? Eh, whatever. Now leaving his, what, third org headed to his 4th? Could be more than just performance at play there.

C for the same reason. Could have potentially been an A or B if they used the Doyle trade package or comparable for a rental starter rather than a CF that can’t hit a lick. Having to DFA Pereira is the poop on the poopsicle of this series of deadline trades.

Gave them a D. Boston Smith hurt a little. I would have said B if Castillo was pitching like he normally does.
