Iconoclastic defender my ass. What tends to make things a drag here is actually the reverse of what you allege - it's the constant drone of sarcastic trolls, cub fans, and know-it-alls hating on the Sox, or trying their best to depress true Sox fans, their friends and even their own children from attending White Sox games or enjoying the players and the games. Not worried about seeing any of those keyboard commandos at Sox Fest, Camel Back or at the park this season.4 points

So they can drop a few hundred million dollars and still lose 100 games? Great story, all while giving up multiple draft picks.4 points

We’ve been checking out the Chicago Dogs instead. Far cheaper and great family fun.3 points

Can I let you in on a secret? Anthony Santander doesn't change that.3 points

There are many players and prospects that the WSox have to cheer for. Lighten up, enjoy the game and I bet your children will follow your lead and do just the same.2 points

Imagine someone making snide comments about another poster’s children just because they have the strange obsession to defend Jerry and Getz, an awful MLB owner and GM, to the bitter end. I won’t even try to understand that sort of insanity.2 points

Thanks but I don’t need life lessons and parenting advice from @WestEddy asshole2 points

cutting marinaccio, a made-up player who doesn't exist. getz playing some 4D chess over here.2 points

I'd give Schultz a decent chance . But I can understand not being the #1 guy that soon. They'll still likely be handling him delicately. Hope he and Hagen Smith both are healthy and lights out this year, along with the Montgomery Twins. Then things will start to heat up .2 points

I’ve conceded that they will never be a real contender as long as Jerry owns the team so I’m not worried about future hypotheticals. Under that premise, at least give me a few players my kids can cheer for today and a non embarrassing mlb product.2 points

Translation: By the time that we may actually need a Santander, Santander probably won't be a Santander anymore, and more like a Chris Davis.2 points

This isn't a bad take. We are happy, but they don't deserve extra credit for doing the obvious thing. We're conditioned for them to do the wrong thing, because we live in Chicago, but they did the right thing, and it's a good first step. But drafting Caleb and hiring Ben Johnson quite frankly is the easy part. They haven't shown us they can do the hard part.2 points
-
Of course, but it was the obvious choice according to just about everyone. Let’s also not pretend that Ben Johnson didn’t specifically want this job, again according to all the rumors. And it sounds like that was mainly due to having Caleb. So it all kind of fell into their lap. I’m happy with all of this. I’m just not going to give them too much credit for making the obvious moves. So far, so good.2 points

I don’t know enough about them in that regard - but the staff is better already than it was under Flus. Johnson is a proven good offensive mind with playcalling experience and Allen is a two time head coach who has a history of being a good DC. If they get the Saints interim HC as special teams coordinator that is another solid experienced get. Flus meanwhile filled his defensive staff with position coaches and has far less depth. Now I don’t know how Johnson will do as head coach and none of his assistants are officially in but I’m hoping we see him pull a strong staff. I think his contract and message bears sent bringing him here is a good start though. I like how they aggressively handled this.2 points

Both Sosa and Cory Snyder simply could not adjust to the way Hriniak wanted them to try to hit. Snyder at least tried, did an interview with him where he talked about the issues but Sosa I've been told simply refused to go along. He wanted to be a home run hitter and pull everything. That wasn't Walt's way and at that time Hriniak had a lot more power than Sosa.1 point

I’m guessing you don’t go around telling people that they should send their kids to therapy in person, just on the Internet. That’s how someone gets smacked upside the HEED.1 point

When somebody whines about the same dumb thing for over a week, then blames it on their kids, then your main reason for the dumb thing you want will be mentioned back. Nobody "took shots" at your kids. You brought it into play.1 point

Combine the above with say a big free agent oline signing (even if you have to overpay say the Chiefs guard) and signing the Lions center to a short-term deal (and draft his replacement in the 3rd - 4th round) and add at least one 1st or 2nd round pick on the oline to go with Wright and that is a better line. Bring back Pryor as a depth move and you still have Jones and Kiran, plus Bates I suppose (if you think he is healthy) and that is a much improved line and the interior would be pretty strong. You than can take one more bite at the apple in terms of pass rush too - maybe its a shorter term deal on Mack (or someone else - until you have enough draft capital) and than add a speedy wideout, certainly a running back (in the above scenario I would be on board with a RB in Rnd 2 or 3), a db or two and a dlinemen plus some more free agent moves and I'd feel like that is a HUGE step forward.1 point

Think I’ll save the money, like Jerry likes to, and take them to a few Chicago Dogs games again instead. Much closer to home and easier to get to while saving a lot of money with great seats to watch a game.1 point

You are already far ahead of many posters at the acceptance stage. Take your kids to the nearest ballpark and one-handed swing a few dingers. They can cheer for you over the Sox current collection of scrubs.1 point

That would make sense if Scholtens was any good to begin with, but he isn’t. Marinaccio is better.1 point
-
Only thing I can think of is they will 60-day IL him in a month and will open up a 40-man spot while holding depth. Granted, he’s not that special and can be cut anyway.1 point

Too late for half assed measures. This is already the most embarassing team in baseball. A few C list free agents doesn't do anything to fix that. Its the draft picks we punt on and resources we giveaway for those players who might actually make this a worthwhile franchise in a couple of years, assuming Chris Getz found someone way better at player dev than he ever actually was.1 point

Cool. I don't buy that for a second. Projection systems like ZIPS have problems with historic outliers. Why? Because by their very definition, they are historic. Statistical models by their very nature regress to norms, not dealing with the worst team in 125 years history of baseball. Literally no one, or nothing, projected 41 wins last year, and we have already significantly subtracted from that team at the major league level. There is no real bullpen, and a AAA starting rotation, if it stays healthy. Getting the offense back to zero would be an improvement, while adding nothing to the offense either. Even with "regression" and luck, that isn't enough to make up 25 games. That's a joke. Nor do I think the idea of trying to take a shortcut around taking the time to actually build a real player development system, and not taking the short cuts that led to to Chris Getz is a good idea. Look, if you want to sustain actually winning, you have to be cranking players out of your minor league system on a regular basis. If you are robbing yourself of draft pick to sign 2nd and 3rd tier free agents, while robbing your minor league system to do it, you are just redoing exactly what got you here in the first place. Once we actually show our player development team has been significantly improved by replacing Chris Getz, there will be the next group of mid tier free agents to choose from. Our next Andrew Benitendi awaits soon enough.1 point

Santander, Alonso, and Kim starts to change the story though. Have to start somewhere and get past the one year rentals eventually.1 point

Eh, there is one MAJOR difference here. ONLY the Bears had access to the #1 pick. Literally anyone could have negotiated with and made offers to Johnson. The had to beat out the rest of the NFL to get him. They didn't need to do that with Caleb.1 point

Just heard the news and am devastated. Jeff, Billy Pierce and Roland Hemond were three of the finest men I ever knew. Words fail me right now. We talked often over the years and he was always gracious with a lot of stories. I'll call the family on Monday. Just terrible news.1 point

I don't know if this deserves a new string. For the last few weeks, my brower will refresh, or something, and I go to this page: https://www.soxtalk.com/forums/?app=core&module=system&controller=ajax&do=instantNotifications&csrfKey=10d66629f674db7bc25c7d32b97f9e00¬ifications=0&messages=0 I end up having to cut everything out after "forums" to get the site back. Just information for you guys.1 point

I have no idea if Nicky is or will be a good hitting coach. One thing I do know, if he didn’t have his cup of coffee with the White Sox, he would have a different job now, and that, in the past, has been a huge problem. So the skepticism should be understood. I do believe he is a coach’s son, so he may have some of that in his DNA.1 point
