And I took that personally -- Late Stage Hawk Harrelson3 points

What JR has done to the White Sox franchise in his 44 years of ownership is despicable, it’s amazing that there are any Sox fans left at all because of this man, what’s more amazing is that the Sox will draw close to 1.5 million this season.3 points

It's not. What experience did he have before he took this job that qualified him to be a major market PBP #1 guy?3 points

I'm not absolving JR of jack crap but the Sox have been hurt considerably by structural changes in MLB: namely the competitive balance picks and the draft changes. You have every other team in the division getting additional picks and the Sox for all intents and purposes operate as a small market team, MLB just doesn't qualify them as one given the current rules.3 points

Those of us around long enough know that he's been a PR disaster almost from the get-go. He's been alienating fans since 1982 and his late partner Eddie Einhorn was just as bad if not worse. There was a brief respite in 2005 before the franchise has gone into the ditch over the last 18 or so years culminating in last year's all-time record loss total. Disgraceful.2 points

Was thinking that too, and today is the 20th anniversary of the walk off homer vs the Indians.2 points

And it helps a lot that those franchises have been winning games. As a broadcaster myself I can tell you there is nothing more difficult then trying to keep fans interested in a bad team/program as well as keeping yourself enthused and willing to put the work in over the course of a year. As Charlie Finley once said of Bill Veeck's White Sox, "You can't ballyhoo a funeral..."2 points

To give an example of a couple TV teams I like I'd throw out the KC crew and the Mets' team. KC crew is a former low level minors guy, position player, dad played MLB ball so familiar with the game, but he also has a great voice and call; he's paired with another former player, forget his name, who was a pitcher so has a pitcher's perspective and those two can bounce things off each other naturally during a game. Mets crew is the best mix of serious baseball and fun. It starts with Hernandez not taking himself so seriously even tho he's more of a legend in his home town than Stone will ever be. The more I consider it the more I think Stone is just as big of a problem in the booth as Schriffen. There's only one way to work with Steve and that's to kiss his ass and just ignore his sour puss inclinations while flattering his tired talking points. Really straight jackets the play by play guy.2 points

Not even close to reality. This is from my story in November 2022 from one of six sources I spoke with: “Jason Benetti’s deal with the Sox is up, the Sox hold the option for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He went to Fox to negotiate that deal with them after he was told to do it and then come back to the Sox and they’d work something out. Jason wanted to get the deal done with the Sox first and then go to Fox or ESPN or whoever. Turns out when he came back to the Sox and said that he needs 40 days off so he can do the Fox work he was told, ‘no, that’s not happening.’ So I don’t know what’s going to happen to him or Steve Stone.”2 points

The Sox told him to look for a new deal and then told him to leave when he got it.2 points

We need 30+ homer guys in outfield corners. Beni should be the LH DH and will still get plenty of bats as there are more right handed pitchers. It will be interesting if JR gives the OK to bring on some free agents, if not then the Sox will be facing another year of losing baseball but probably avoid 100 losses. Of course we are dealing with JR so my guess is no significant free agents will be signed and it will be more of the same with 2nd and 3rd rate free agents brought aboard.2 points

He doesn't rack up Ks, but I'm pretty fond of Martin and his ability to generally keep the team in games for 5+ This was start #24 for him and his 9th QS. It was #31 for Cease, who has 8 quality starts so far. Martin has failed to go 5 IP only twice all year while Cease has been chased early 10 times, so even with ~6 weeks of missed time Dart still has more 5+ inning starts on the season. Not bad at all for a 14th rounder.2 points

Don’t get to many games, commute is 1,300 miles. We do take in games when the Sox play the Rays at the Trop, 90 miles door to door. I have watched just about every game this year except when they’re out west, you are correct, they have been very entertaining and these young guys should only get better and I think it would be a crime if they don’t bring in some quality free agents this off season.1 point

I think you've been pushing this narrative way too hard. TV deal issue past 18+ months been tough, but theres no chance this team lost money in playoff years. Jerry wouldnt continue to increase payroll if he was losing money badly. It also makes zero sense that the team would be bleeding money badly yet Jerry has no interest in getting out from under it. Has this team taken on debt the past few years? Absolutely. Does that mean they're bleeding cash and have to act like the cheapest org in professional baseball? Obviously not in my opinion.1 point

Expected. I still can’t believe there were some posters that thought they would spend money just because the payroll is so low. It’s like people forgot who the owner still is. He has no incentive to spend any money until he sells.1 point

Agreed. Plus, I don't care what jobs Schriff had before he joined the White Sox. I said he's unqualified, not inexperienced. I don't care if he's finishing his 2nd season and is less bad than last year. He was unqualified when he was hired and he's still a really bad announcer. If the Sox fired him tomorrow, would any MLB pick him up as their PBP man? I highly doubt it.1 point

If you have a differing opinion and some stats to back up your view, fine. But no need for personal insults. I'm not going to stoop to your level..1 point

Benetti had experience calling baseball games for the Windy City Thunderbolts, the Salem Avalanche (HOU Single-A affiliate in '06), and Syracuse Chiefs in addition to other gigs in various sports before landing the Sox job. He was far more experienced in calling baseball than Schriffdog.1 point

Haha, I love your accusation of racism when Schriffen was literally commentating fucking SlamBall prior to the White Sox. Do you even know WTF SlamBall is Tray? Are you truly this naive? Jerry is fucking cheap and so he obviously went cheap to replace a better announcer in Benetti, or am I also being racist? Am I now anti-Semitic for calling Jerry cheap? No, I’m not. He IS fucking cheap. Meanwhile, no one cares if Schriffen is a “great guy” if he sucks at his job. Only a truly clueless Sox homer would think he is a good commentator. Your passive aggressive hints that everyone else is racist when they disagree with you are an embarrassment to this site and humanity in general. You play this game that everyone is out to get you and any of your awful takes when people disagree with you. No, they aren’t. Stop making bullshit whiny excuses because you can’t convince anyone else to agree with your ridiculous takes on everything. That means your arguments are weak. Tray constantly defends Jerry and thinks Schriffen is great at his job. How can anyone take him seriously at this point? This is either conspiracy level trolling at this point or Tray has achieved greater White Sox homer status than Hawk Harrelson. I desperately await your “Fvk you” post… 😉1 point

I have zero interest listening to the broadcasts anymore, he is so corny and hard to listen to1 point

What was Benetti's experience before the Sox job? A little bit of KBO. ESPN3. Very similar to Schriffen except Schriff did work for ABC News. They both did radio broadcasts for their college. "Experience" is kind of a weird argument. You're either good at the job or you're not, you don't need a 30 year track record to be "good". Mind you, while I think Schriff is actually good at being a commentator, I wish he knew more about baseball. Had actual takes beyond what he's told by producers. He's done it a couple of times this season where his 'eye' offered a little bit of insight. If he spent his free time researching baseball like Benetti obviously does, he could be really good. It would be a shame to just fire him. McKnight isn't any better. Schriff's energy appeals to a non-boomer crowd. But it's like caulfield said, baseball fans can tell the difference between someone who knows what he's talking about and someone who doesn't. But baseball isn't rocket science, I suspect if he made an attempt to be better, he could be. Something that still sticks out to me from last season is him talking about how he wishes he had time to research the minor leagues. I think he should find the time. I listened to some semi-recent Tigers broadcast where Benetti was talking about the 'pitching lab' at his alma mater, Wake Forest...seemingly just random knowledge, but actually insightful. I think Schriff tries to be insightful about the players' personalities or whatever, but I think we would all like it to be about baseball. He could be genuinely good at the job. But, like, management needs to light a fire under him a little bit. Contract year might do that.1 point

I don't disagree that it would be difficult, if not financially impractical, to fix some of the biggest structural flaws of Rate Field. I just think it's a possible outcome that they could remain at Rate Field long-term. I for one will be very unhappy and disappointed if that happens since IMHO it'll doom the Sox to pretty much their current, reduced market share (a small market team within a major market) and to recurring attendance issues for decades to come. When you say "take away the parking that most fans like", by "most fans" do you mean the 17,000 that show up for games now or the fans that say they'll only attend games if the Sox make the playoffs in multiple seasons? I'm sorry, but the Sox have been catering to fans who want nothing more than a ballpark right off the expressway and surrounded by acres of parking lots and it's obviously not working and it goes against what just about every other MLB team has figured out over the last 30 years. Plus, it's not like they'll eliminate all parking if they redeveloped the area around the current stadium. They'll also have parking if they move to the 78, too.1 point

You're right! I'll fix the original post. They're a good role model for the Sox -- it only took them two years to turn things around and get back in the playoffs, and they've been a perennial contender ever since (cheating notwithstanding).1 point

Teel and Colson literally both project those WAR numbers right now, I don't understand your comment. Its happening, right now. Unless you assume a major drop off from both of them they are proving it. Teel has 2.0 fWAR through 70 games, Montgomery 1.9 fWAR through 62, in their rookie debuts. The bWAR numbers are even better for Colson. I don't see anything wrong having the expectation they can be 4 war players based off what we have seen so far, although Colson seems to be the one who may fall short on that if he doesn't make some adjustments.1 point

Your first four words are key - PART of the issue. We can all agree that JR has made misstep after misstep in his 44 years of ownership that has left the White Sox franchise reeling. At least it looks like he's doing one right thing at the end by lining up a local billionaire to be the next Sox owner after he's gone. But it's going to take a lot of work on the Ishbias part to right this ship. It won't be as simple as just cranking out checks for free agents. They've probably already learned that with their first few years of owning the Suns. Yes, this team needs to eventually start spending on premium free agents just like the big boys but there's a lot of leg work that needs to be done before we get to that point such as rebuilding all the scouting, player development, coaching, etc. that has been a failure over the last 2 decades. IMO, while the on the field stuff is of primary importance, there's other work that needs to be done to win back fans. That includes the ballpark experience and yes, even down to jettisoning that incompetent clown in the broadcast booth. It's not just that White Sox fans are angry. Worse than that - many are just indifferent and really don't care anymore. That's what the new owners need to overcome. Also note that the people who remember the White Flag trade, the 1994 strike, SportsVision, etc. aren't the future. The youngest of us are pushing 40 or 50. What have they done to attract any younger fans in the last 15 years who don't even remember the 2005 WS win let alone all the pre-2005 missteps?1 point
