Good Lord, how the f*** did this thread get derailed about a player that has never been linked to the Sox in any rumor mill as far as I know.....and for whom it would make little sense for the Sox to acquire since they'd have to give up a ton of their existing young talent to get him?9 points
-
At no point do I ever want Matt Shaw on my team because I will always actively root against him.9 points

I’m not trading our best trade asset for an infielder when you consider what we have in the pipeline/draft.8 points

If you think Matt Shaw attended that funeral for anything other than outside of baseball business interests you are a rube.7 points
-
Welp, it's over. None of us should ever have morals or standards again. This is absolutely a copout.7 points

I love a run this long about a potential trade exactly zero industry sources are speculating about. It’s not a rumor. It’s baseball fanfic. It tells how long the wait until pitchers and catchers report is going to be.7 points
-
Yeah, no idea why we’d waste trade resources on another infielder.7 points

I do not want Matt Shaw on this team. I don’t think he could stomach being on the south side anyway… for reasons. Plus, he puts himself before the team.6 points

He needs to spin a tale about a Korean player from 1973.3 points

Seriously. We need @caulfield12 back to keep the thread on topic.3 points

Oh hey aren’t you the guy who knows for a fact what Eloy’s motivation is for playing winter ball?3 points

He clearly wants to be a conservative influencer as much as he wants to play baseball.3 points

The specific scenario we were talking about was a baseball player getting permission from his team and confirming that his teammates would be okay with him missing a game to attend the funeral of his friend. The guy did not potentially commit a crime, which was one of the comparisons made (Clevinger). I don’t feel I need to comment on this any further because quite frankly it’s ridiculous.3 points
-
The front office gave him the ok…I haven’t seen anything to suggest the players supported it. Pretty sure I read or heard somewhere that many didn’t.3 points

So the White Sox should do whatever it takes to obtain an obstinate rookie who bails on his team when it's go time?3 points

1.5 fWAR. Considering his sub .700 OPS, and filtering out the hype that accompanied him, the 1.5 is more believable.3 points

No idea why they'd rather have bregman than tucker.3 points

It was a great game to be at. Not as good as the podsednik HR in the world series. But close.3 points

I never said anything about not upholding ones standards. I just noted, accurately, we all root for people we disagree with politically because frankly, we don't know where everyone stands. I find it absurd to root against someone because you disagree with their politics but to each their own.2 points

Were his teammates supposed to tell him not to go? Lol What a weird position to put your teammates in..most guys dont need to double check with their teammates when they attend a funeral because people naturally understand. The fact he even had to ask shows what a pantload he is.2 points

Damn. Can't believe we did SoxMachine dirty like that.2 points

I get to dictate how I feel about a person's commitment to their job. I'm probably a workaholic, so there's that. I recognize my politics are different from a lot of athletes I root for. You posted a blurb from Keith Law criticizing Shaw's coachability. I would think that being very present in your kids' life regularly trumps going to a neighbor's rock concert/memorial, and practically every ballplayer sacrifices the former on a yearly basis.2 points

This gets sillier because we all know whose funeral it was, and pretending that's not a flash point for some of us here is provocative, itself. I missed my aunt's 70th birthday (huge deal in my family politic) because the cabinet shop I worked for was burglarized the night before, I lived the closest, and I met the police, and boarded up the point of entrance. I missed most of a cousin's wedding for work. I finally threw down and left to make drinks and dancing. My wife and I have juggled countless wakes and funerals around our work schedules. It was controversial at the time. Nobody makes anything about a player taking time off to be with their child for an operation, birth of a child, or family member's death. Tim Anderson played a whole season after his best friend from childhood was killed, and I remember the response in other online communities being mixed.2 points

To fair, he asked a total of 5 teammates and you have no idea what they said other than what Shaw is alluding to. Just weird you are trying to spin this thing into this big positive thing that everyone was behind. I assure you that’s not the case.2 points
-
So? Is that for any of us to judge? It’s not like he just attended without permission from his team and the wife of his dead friend actually invited him. Imagine someone telling you that you shouldn’t attend a friend’s funeral. I mean what is going on here?2 points
-
I’m sure most players miss funerals of friends they’ve even known longer for their team.2 points
-
I mean, we literally live and learn. It takes once of burning yourself on a stove to think "maybe I shouldn't do that again" and not "well I am sure others have burned themselves, so why stop now?"2 points

And it's not like it was his mother's funeral. It was a memorial for a neighbor he only knew about a year. And really, normal, busy people split up, where the wife hits the wake and the husband hits the funeral, and everybody's checking email and texts at the after-luncheon. Shaw was there to "support" a national celebrity he was a neighbor with for a year at a stadium. His absence probably wouldn't have been noticed, you know, with the President and others attending. Normal people would have sent a card, then called, if they were that close. It was a serious character issue with the choice Shaw made.2 points

Vargas had a higher wRC+ than him last year and nearly the same fWAR. I get the prospect pedigree, but let’s not pretend this kid is some sure fire star because of his 2025 season. Given the players that we currently have, acquiring a RH hitting infielder with baggage who won’t come cheap seems like the worst move we could possibly make.2 points

I think it’s more likely Cubs keep him in semi-regular bench role or trade Hoerner and open up 2B for him.2 points

Honestly, rest of the playoffs are gravy. I will be disappointed when/if they lose, but they LOST 10 IN A ROW LAST SEASON. I'm all about making the most of your window, but they just won a playoff game against the Packers.2 points
