Brooks BBQ is about 15 minutes away just outside of Oneonta which is very good. If you want a nice dinner, and by nice I mean elegant 5 star quality, the Otesaga is amazing. There's a farmers museum in Cooperstown as well as the Fennimore house. I actually havent been there in a couple years. I gave a presentation during the annual symposium a couple summers back. Just walk around downtown and there are cool shops all over. There's a wax museum and a place to get a bat engraved if either of those interest you. There's a Cider Mill up there as well as a winery. I'd also suggest checking out the two breweries. Cooperstown Brewing Company is one of them and Ommegang is the other. CBC makes a beer called Pride of Milford which is probably my favorite. They have several IPA style beers. A tour/tasting is like $5. Ommegang might be $10, i havent been a couple years but they make Belgian style beers. I think its the oldest belgian style brewery in the states. I'd recommend checking that one out in particular. Also, about 20 minutes away in Oneonta is the National Soccer Hall of Fame if that is of any interest to you. I grew up in Binghamton and went to school in Oneonta so i used to go up at least once a year, but i'm further downstate now and havent had a chance to go back. Unfortunately i cant remember the name of the little restaurant on Main St i used to go to. It really is quite exceptional.

QUOTE (scenario @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 08:56 AM) Makes me wonder if they plan to stretch him out to compete for the 5th starter position. I wouldnt mind giving him a ST invite with a chance to win the long man spot next year, but i dont want him anywhere near the rotation however.

We should just trade for Hanley Ramirez . That'll have our middle infield set for the next 5-7 years

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Oct 15, 2008 -> 08:23 PM) I like Duke's chances this year. Whole team back except Nelson, and then add on another year to the annual-better Paulus, Singler, Scheyer, Thomas, and Smith, and then freshmen Plumlee, Williams, and Czyz. I think they can make an Elite 8 run. I'm not sold on Duke. Very erratic, lack of athelticism, lack of size (and especially depth of size). I bet they go Sweet 16 but I wouldnt put money any further. I havent looked at all the teams too closely yet but an intial Final Four prediction of mine would be UNC (shocking) UConn Oklahoma Tennessee/Louisville (i cant chose between the two) -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 17, 2008 -> 11:58 AM) I wish I had 1/100th of the investment knowledge that Buffet has. I try to follow his advice often, and got myself back into the market with my "side money" on Monday. It's not a lot right now (only $1k), but its something. My parents got themselves out of the market about 9 months ago. Not terrible timing considering where we've gone over that period, but now the problem is convincing people like to reinvest now. I'm about to receive some money from a will any day now (about $2K, so not a lot) and I plan on putting it all directly into stocks. I'm going to follow some advice I found online about a 6 month plan over 10 stocks and change every 6. I figured since i've never really had the money, its kind of like getting into the market for free. Hopefully, like Buffet is hinting at, I can catch some of these stocks on their low end just before they start to rise. He is right though that in the long run the stocks will go up. So with the market down right now it does make sense to jump in. But then again, I'm just a couple years out of college with very little market history or experience so what do i know

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Oct 15, 2008 -> 10:11 PM) Everyone here knows McCain won this. If not go hang with AHB. NSS, at least you admitted the obvious. McCain did win, IMO obviously too. But he could have won by more if he appeared as if he respected Obama and didnt give the looks he did. I was glad with a lot of his answers, but as I saw him while Obama was talking I kept shaking my head. He came across poorly, IMO. I also find it funny (well, more like discouraging) that so many people are either ignoring or failing to see how Socialist Obama is in many ways.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Oct 14, 2008 -> 09:56 AM) Anyone watch HIMYM last night? I thought it was one of the funnier episodes of all-time, especially with "old" Barney. Haha agreed. The intervention stuff was great.

I'm really not liking Earl this year.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 9, 2008 -> 01:34 PM) Somewhat suprising given that Poreda was sent to the AFL to work on his secondary pitches. The face that he's working in relief, however, gives me the clue that he's no longer being groomed for the starting rotation, and will instead fill the same function as Matt Thorton in the sox's bullpen. Or they're just protecting his arm by limiting the innings he pitches this year...

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 8, 2008 -> 08:35 AM) Alright, the wife and I are heading to Vegas for our 2nd Anniversary. We are staying mid-strip (recently renovated Mirage) and I was curious if anyone had some recommendations for bars/clubs to hit up. We're 25, so open to anything (other than swinger's clubs you assholes, lol), and we want to really experience the "musts" of Las Vegas. Money isn't much of a concern, and we don't want to hit up things we can do here (ie Second City and ESPN Zone)... we have tickets for a Cirque show and are going to the fake Italy area for dinner, so you needn't recommend those. Anyone have a review of the Pussycat Dolls club? I'm not goin gto kid myself that I'm cool enough and I don't want my wife to flash a boob so we're not going to worry about the Playboy Club, haha. So anyway, let me know what you guys recommend! http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=66178 Check that thread for ideas people have mentioned in the past. I'm goin there in about a month and half so i'll monitor for responses too, haha

I was sent this in an e-mail a few days ago, kinda funny. Don't know whether anyone actually said this though. "On television today a Democratic spokesman pointed out that when Obama holds a rally 25-30,000 people show up, whereas when McCain holds one he only draws 10-15,000. The Republican spokesman replied, 'That's because McCain's supporters are at work.'"

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 7, 2008 -> 10:01 PM) Who Would Better Handle Iraq? Obama - 51 McCain - 47 I really don't see how people would believe that. Like or hate McCain, agree with him or not, someone with his experience (both in and out of the military) better equips him to handle a military situation by far, IMO. I'm not surprised by the results of any of the other polls, I just think the results of that one are surprising.

I only watched it for about 45 minutes because thats all i could take. The format was poor. Neither candidate really ever answered a question. I'll just say Obama didn't answer questions a little less obviously as McCain so I guess you can say Obama "won"

I'm gonna be in Lake Havasu City for 10 days in November. Would that be near anywhere where they play AFL games?

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Oct 6, 2008 -> 02:29 PM) I understand your point Balta but how many people out there are thinking "Gosh I really love all of McCain's positions but he's just too old"? Well I know I am very uncomfortable with McCain's age and if I agreed with Obama's positions a little more my decision on who i'd be voting for would be a lot more difficult. I'm sure there are those who, if McCain was 10 years younger, would vote for him who arent planning to right now.

His Bush and Madden impersonations are great, and i think they're very funny. They have him on the comedy stations on Sirius sometimes, but not in moderation he can be very annoying. He does seem to re-hash things a lot. For example, he uses his Adam Sandler "want a piece of pie?" line in many of his acts and it gets annoying. I would listen to him doing his John Madden/Pat Summerall play by play any day though.

I was in Astoria, Queens Saturday afternoon. Place called the Beer Garden at Bohemian Hall. Its mostly outside, modeled after a German beer hall. Folksy type music, small wooden dance floor with a stage. Food vendors around the outside. The beer was kinda expensive but they had so many good european style beers there (Hoegaarden, Spaten, Stella, Heineken, etc...) It was a lot of fun. I lived in Germany when i was younger and have vague memories of being at a beer hall and the moment I walked in there was an immediate sense of recognizing that type of atmosphere. Highly recommended to anyone who lives around NYC

I have a Garmin Nuvi i think the 780. It's expensive but it is great. It can double as a music player if you'd like and it is bluetooth compatible. I've only had to use it a handful of times. I went to Atlantic City a few weeks back and it worked great and I drove around downtown/midtown manhattan this past weekend and it worked perfectly there too. No real negatives yet, IMO. If you're willing to spend some money, i'd definitely recommend that model.
