    The GRE

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Feb 7, 2006 -> 11:52 PM) Just wanted to know if anyone has taken the GRE (Graduate Record Exam). I need to take it in the next month or so for the program I am applying to get into. It's actually the last thing I need to do in order to get accepted. I understand it can be quite tricky. I've gotten one of those Kaplan books and have started to look over things and brush up. Anyone have any advice on how to study for this thing, how difficult it really is or any other tips. Thanks in advance if anyone can offer anything. I haven't found much if anything on the web in terms of discussion of the test from actual test-takers themselves. I took it a few years ago. I just practiced a couple times with the CD-ROM that was mailed to me by the GRE people. It was pretty much a replica of the actual exam. I'd suggest just working with one of those discs for a couple hours a day for a couple days and it might be enough. I think since then they've changed one of the sections from analytical (which was actually a lot of fun) to some sort of written exam. This seems to be an overly subjective sort of thing, but whatever. Overall I didn't think it was too difficult.
  2. So I understand if all these appeals fail, that the dancing mascot dude is gone. But will they also have to lose the cartoon Indianhead logo with the headdress?
  3. scotch. I thought it tasted really good as a 16 or 17 year old at a buddy's house. I have no idea how much I drank, but I proceded to throw up in their pool, in their bathtub, in the yard in front of his parents. I ended up at a pizza joint passed out and my dad happened to walk in. Fortunately he didn't see me, but just the scent of scotch now makes me queasy.
  4. Very solid analysis, but this is news to me: Jose Contreras' reward for going 15-7 and being one of the AL's best pitchers down the stretch last season was a move back to the bottom of the rotation. At least his matchups should be favorable (take note, Commissioner players and other daily-transactions leaguers). Isn't Count our #2 going into the season?
  5. Nirvana's In Utero in '93 at The Crow's Nest (in Plainfield maybe?)... I think the store is long gone now.
  6. Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, the guy who performs most Tommy John surgeries, suffered a heart attack Sunday night. It sounds like he's in critical but stable condition. This is a pretty big deal in my mind. http://www.deadspin.com/sports/baseball/is...c-ok-147685.php
  7. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jan 9, 2006 -> 08:34 PM) He did. His dad officially told us that Brandon is going to combine his two favorite numbers (35&20) and go to 55 I figured it was Big Frank (35) + Officer Karkovice (20). I assume Karko and Frank were pretty good friends. They probably hung out a lot outside of the clubhouse.
  8. I live in NY and therefore get the Yankees' YES network. I'm so hard up for baseball that recently I've been watching replays of games from the Yanks '96 and '98 World Series. The offseason sucks.
  9. QUOTE(WCSox @ Jan 2, 2006 -> 03:37 PM) You're mastery of the English language is very impressive. Irony. I'm against dealing Count at this juncture. I'd much rather see what BA can produce april-june. There's going to be a CF available mid-season for trade if he doesn't pan out. And I'm sure Oz would have no problem putting Tavares in the 9 hole. Hmmm... low OBP, low SLG defensive minded player in the 9 hole? I'm pretty sure Ozzie remembers a Sox player fitting that description batting 9th through the 80's-90's.
  10. Don't Reggie Sanders teams always make the playoffs? Consider yo'self warned. I actually really like this signing for KC. They have to overpay to get decent players to sign with them, but this is a reasonable contract.
  11. Brilliant insight from Texas Sen. John Cornyn: "At least two senators that I heard with my own ears cited this as a reason why they decided to vote to not allow a bipartisan majority to reauthorize the Patriot Act," said Republican Sen. John Cornyn (news, bio, voting record) of Texas. "Well, as it turns out the author of this article turned in a book three months ago and the paper, The New York Times, failed to reveal that the urgent story was tied to a book release and its sale by its author." Gimme a f***ing break. It SHOULD be a reason to vote against reauthorization of the act. It would have still been a reason had the info been released 6 weeks ago. or 6 months ago. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20051218/ap_on_go_co/cornyn_times

    Ipod Help

Here's a nice program for taking music off your ipod if you don't have any luck with the other. It says it's $15 but if you only use certain options (of which moving files from ipod to computer is one), it's free. I've used versions of it for a couple years. http://www.ipodsoft.com/index.php?/software/ipodagent
  14. so does he still need to stay on texas' major league roster all season?
  15. QUOTE(AnthraxFan93 @ Dec 5, 2005 -> 05:48 PM) What was it? Free agent Sidney Ponson is telling teams he would prefer to start, but would close under the right circumstances. A friend of Ponson's told FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal that the right-hander has stopped drinking, lost weight and grown his hair out. We were skeptical, but if he's really grown his hair out, a four- or five-year deal would seem to be appropriate.
  16. I never saw Anderson in the field as a minor leaguer, but I can recall him looking very average defensively with the big league club. If he's going to be replacing ARow's glove, I hope y'all are right about him being better.
  17. If we're giving up Duque and Marte in a deal with Philly (with their combined $6.75 mil 2006 salary), I wouldn't count on the Phils also eating half of Thome's salary. I consider Duque basically a salary dump. But if they were to pick up $5 mil (using most of maggsmaggs numbers from another thread)... Starters: C AJP- $3.5 1B Kong-$14 2B Tad-$2.4 3B Crede-$2.5 SS Uribe-$3.15 LF Pods-$1.9 CF ARow-$3 RF Dye-$5 DH Thome-$10 Bench: Widge-$.65 Ozuna-$.50 Anderson-$.35 Frank-$3.0 Harris-$.40 SP: Buehrle-$7.75 Count-$6 (Yanks still picking up $2?) Freddy-$9 Gar-$6 Bmac-$.35 RP: Jenks-$.35 Cotts-$.40 Clifford-$1.2 Hermanson-$3.0 Viz-$1.5 FA lefty-$2.5 Jurassic and Frank buyouts: $4 Total:$92.4 Would Frank come back in this role? Would they take him back? Probably not. So swap in Gload at $.5 and the payroll sits at $90 mil. A bit of a stretch, but realistic. It's amazing what a value the Sox bullpen is.
  18. I recently legitimately bought the new Coral album. Much to my surprise, I was forced to agree to some ridiculous terms of service deal where they installed some software on my computer (DRM) before I could even listen to the music. I then come to find out that this software is impossible to uninstall and leaves my computer subject to easy exploitation by hackers. Furthermore, I'm not even able to put these protected songs on my iPod, which is just about the only way I listen to music these days. This is not the way to get people to buy music legally.
  19. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Oct 26, 2005 -> 08:48 PM) Sam Adams OctoberFest has been the drink of choice to start each win. I just bought 12 more for tonight. QUOTE(guapotaco @ Oct 26, 2005 -> 10:28 PM) Sam Adams Oktoberfest its been good luck so far that's the s*** i've been takin in the whole playoffs, no stopping now.
  20. outstanding topic. i can't put a finger on why i'm not as excited as i should be. i've actually gotten less excited by the series. maybe it's in inverse proportion to how much i drink. i drink more now and am more numb to the goingson.
  21. They couldn't start their coverage of the game until FOX coverage was done, which it wasn't.

  23. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Oct 21, 2005 -> 03:35 AM) This Week in God is not the same with Rob. True. But I also think Corddry's remote pieces are almost always better than Colbert's.

    fidelity

Just got done watching the movie Closer again, mostly to allow myself an opportunity to look at Natalie Portman. It got me wondering how many people are faithful in their relationships. A recent Playboy survey (and this probably isn't the most scrupulously controlled survey) showed that: -75% of men and 82% of women had never cheated on their partner -almost half of men and 2/3 of women had never even considered doing it (which I find hard to believe) and most surprisingly (or impressively? or lame?) -60% of men and 77% of women said they wouldn't cheat even if they were guaranteed not to get caught Although the majority of Soxtalkers are pretty young, this could still be interesting.
