Good weekend to choose with all the focus on football...Sox/Detroit must have been the very last option for anyone paying any attention to the sports landscape.

https://sports.yahoo.com/hiring-chaim-bloom-signaled-a-change-in-the-boston-red-soxs-philosophy-firing-him-signals-the-lack-of-one-001854554.html

Bloom built a Top 5 farm system in less than four full years but two last place and now another out of the playoffs doomed him.

Similar payroll to the White Sox...just right above them at #12.

Ofc Rays and O's #28/29 in spending.

The Red Sox have the outline of a core forming in the big leagues, with international hit Masataka Yoshida and homegrown young players in first baseman Triston Casas, pitcher Brayan Bello, outfielder Jarren Duran and newly promoted center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela. Behind them, there are several exciting prospects within shouting distance of Boston, most notably shortstop Marcelo Mayer and surging outfielder Roman Anthony at Double-A.

.....

To be sure, the next executive in Boston will have a lot to work with. The farm system is one of the top five in baseball, by FanGraphs’ estimation, and there’s plenty of offensive talent in the majors. But the defense is dreadful, and the pitching staff needs more robust patching than James Paxton, Corey Kluber and a wave of other early or late-career fliers can provide. That could be easily remedied, assuming said executive can get past the big Green Monster — no, not the wall, the payroll question.

1. Still has no concept of getting on base more as a priority for the worst team at it.

2. Where does he plan to get these more athletic players before next year? They have a handful of trade resources but not a lot, they have some money to spent, but they are already talking about their bullpen needs when they have about 0.75 starting pitchers out of 6. Presumably this would involve trading all their tolerable prospects considering they’d need like 15 players.

Obviously here's no way to fix this team for next year, regardless of the path. But yeah, they need to move away from the Hahn/KW model of building half the team from 1B/DH types. It seems obvious, but I think it's one positive thought process.

More speed & athleticism would be great, but plate discipline & power are far more glaring holes.  And realistically, where is speed and athleticism an actual problem?  Robert is an all-world athlete in CF.  Moncada & Anderson are great athletes when healthy on the left-side of the infield.  Colas is fairly athletic for a guy of his size.  So basically that leaves LF and 2B where you have your highest paid player in franchise history (who doesn’t fit this new focus) and a kid who is one of our few major league ready young players.  Honestly, they’re simply going to trade Eloy for a guy to replace Colas in RF and call it a day.  Throw in a Perez trade and that’s your 2024 positional group.

Salvador Perez just had a concussion or concussion-like symptoms as well.

Wonderful.

Sounds like most of the 2000's and early 2010s when we kept drafting football players such as Courtney Hawkins and Keenyn Walker and trying to refine them into baseball players.

I think if Courtney Hawkins was drafted by another team, he would’ve been a MLB player. They ruined his development by rushing him and they couldn’t develop an approach at the plate

Pretty sure most White Sox fans could agree we could wait a few months for the right hire.

Six of the other fourteen American League teams have a longer current streak than the White Sox.

Seattle, Baltimore and Minnesota have a shot to break the streak this season.

Longest number of years between American League Pennants (1901-2022):

  1. 49 Washington Senators II / Texas Rangers (1961-2009)
  2. 46 Seattle Mariners (1977-2022) Current
  3. 45 Chicago White Sox (1960-2004)
  4. 43 Milwaukee Brewers / Saint Louis Browns (1901-1943)
  5. 41 Los Angeles Angels (1961-2001)
  6. 40 Cleveland Guardians (1955-1994)
  7. 40 Philadelphia / Kansas City / Oakland Athletics (1932-1971)
  8. 39 Baltimore Orioles (1984-2022) Current
  9. 39 Chicago White Sox (1920-1958)
  10. 32 Oakland Athletics (1991-2022) Current
  11. 31 Minnesota Twins (1992-2022) Current
  12. 31 Washington Senators I / Minnesota Twins (1934-1964)
  13. 29 Kansas City Royals (1986-2014)
  14. 29 Toronto Blue Jays (1994-2022) Current
  15. 27 Boston Red Sox (1919-1945)
  16. 27 Cleveland Guardians (1921-1947)
