Quote The A’s told MLB they plan to play in a revolving series of sites until they move, one MLB owner told USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred has yet to publicly address the plans. As much as I feel sorry for A's fans, maybe its time for Oakland to accept that it is not a major league sports town and try to develop a thriving minor league sports scene. Build a nice 10,000 seat ballpark and try to get a AAA or AA team. I see a lot of people complaining about MLB on this, but the reality is Oakland has had teams in all four major sports and couldn't make it work for any. South Side Hit Men Posted November 16, 2023 Share Posted November 16, 2023 Las Vegas is my home away from home, visiting 62 times since 1991, typically 2-3 weeks a year (have family there, did gambling trips when I was young). Really embraced the Vegas Golden Knights who did everything the right way, and converted the 3-4 thousand max fans of their minor league team (the Wranglers) into I’d say Top 6 NHL US market in terms of knowledge and fan base interest. City is NFL crazy because gambling, so they would embrace any team even Mark Davis’ now pathetic organization. When it comes to this team and this owner, not sure if this will be a good long term move or fit. Fischer had much better offers on the table he passed on then this. The site across I 15 would have given him the real estate empire he was angling for, and this site gives him nothing, barely enough room to fit the stadium. They need to tear down the second oldest casino on the strip to accommodate. Local fans really try to avoid going to the strip, a traffic nightmare, and this is in the heart of it. The Raiders stadium is far enough south to accommodate 215 traffic, the hockey stadium on the strip though with 1/3 less capacity and enough infrastructure to accommodate fans. The A’s will have none of it, will be playing in a dome for nearly all of the season, will have the lowest TV market and will struggle to sell seats after a possible initial honeymoon phase. Fischer took the worst possible alternative because he overplayed his hand. Reds' owner wasn't that far off Fisher's burning in effigy status before 2022...then an injection of exciting young talent turned everything around. They get $70M from Comcast for their $43.1M payroll team for every year they remain in the Bay Area. They are jeopardizing their announced 2028 move to Vegas if they don't secure financing by early 2025. I personally hope the deal craps out and either MLB takes ownership as they did with the Expos, forces a sale to competent ownership or they end up in Salt Lake City so Las Vegas (and Oakland) can start over with a clean slate. Oakland brought the Wild Wild West site to Carson City, on Tropicana but like the Rio also west of I-15 / the Strip. This would have given them the second highest real estate development acreage. However, it is owned by the anti-union scumbag Station’s Casinos, so the collective unions were able to block that deal in the Nevada assembly. The Tropicana site was given as a CV last minute alternative before the end of the Spring Session after the WWW site was defeated. It took a lot of arm twisting to barely pass this revised bill. It is a very bad parcel for all parties involved. First the Strip is already an absolute cluster F , even before you factor in Formula One which will continue to devastate traffic and the overall Strip experience over the next nine years. Second, this is the worst site for the A’s (even worse than building on the Coliseum land) as there is no wiggle room with the adjacent airport. They have no renderings at this point, because you can’t fit a retractable roof with height and space limitations on the site. And there is little additional room for additional resort development. Ultimately I see the current plan either being changed or rescinded by the assembly, moved to a better location within Vegas, or falling apart due to Fisher’s incompetence and lack of securing $1.1B to build the bad stadium plan. Would say the teachers union (isolated vs. the trade unions who want it) is a longer shot to block it in the courts, or get a referendum on the ballot for voters to block funding in the upcoming 2024 general election. I'm also guessing that MLB is guiding the A's away from a couple targeted expansion cities, too, like Nashville and Portland, OR.
