Ishbia increasing minority stake in Sox

I am wary of a private equity investor who lays in wait for years holding a minority stake rather than simply making a public overture to purchase the team outright, or alternatively, explain what his game is here. At some point perhaps Hobson/George Lucas decide to combine shares with Michael Reinsdorf and just box him out.  That would be beating Ishbia at his own game.

The idea that he might actually buy the Sox almost sounds too good to be true to me.

My concern is that Ishbia will be a short term owner, a private equity investor who improves the value of the franchise and then flips and maybe relocates the team.  In some sense, that is what he does for a living.

Did he do that with the Phoenix Suns?

He's made it no secret that he wants to own a team, that baseball is his passion.

Nothing you're saying makes any bit of sense, knowing what we know about the team ownership stakes he's already been involved in.

You think he's building his Winnetka estate to flip it, too?  That's what he does for a living, after all.

I dont think the Sox will move any time soon, especially if Ishbia is the next owner. That said, never rule out a move completely. If they were starting an MLB tomorrow, there's no way Chicago would have two teams. It's just not where we're at

Despite an atrocious year for the Sox, the two Chicago teams had almost 4.3 million people attend games.  And before last year, they saw 4.5 million+ annually.  I might agree that Chicago wouldn't get two teams if MLB was to start today, but there are more than enough baseball fans in Chicagoland to support two teams.  If (hopefully) the Sox get a new owner that actually wants to spend and put a good product on the field, the Sox could get back to having attendance of 2 million or more.  Build a new stadium along with a better team, and attendance won't be an issue.

That depends, is the chipper owned by private equity?

I feel bad explaining to you that Non-Disclosure Agreements are a thing.

Which makes total sense with his flagstar business and a new $80 million house being built somewhere else... oh wait.

Bob Nightengale was on 670 this morning and speculated that Justin Ishbia has close to 40% of the team now.

Wow. This would be huge if true. I'm assuming at 40%, he would own more shares than Jerry, correct?

He's gotten much more correct on the Sox than he's ever gotten wrong. That trade was done but I believe Matt Foster or the pitcher in return was hurt and Arizona backed out.

Jerry doesn't own very much of the team. Under 20% I believe.

It wouldn't have the 1 team shoehorned near the lake, 20 minutes from the Kennedy either.

Typically the out of town guys do much better reporting big Sox info than the locals, as they aren't scared about losing access.

Bob has been Reinsdorf's mouthpiece for ages. If he said it, I tend to believe Jerry wanted it out there.

I think Justin bid on the Twins while he was building Mara-lago-Chicago.   I'd bet he loves Winnetka's North shore more than the South side of Chicago.  But who knows what anyone's long term intentions are? Nevertheless, the old axiom that money talks may apply, especially to a billionaire corporate raider.  I agree with Reinsdorf on one (and only one) thing - The White Sox are worth more out of town than they will ever be worth here. No amount of money can change the dynamic here with the Cubs as the dominant baseball franchise in town.  Ishbia knows that which is one reason that he may seek greener pastures.
