Colson Montgomery to AZ Complex

The list of high draft picks that turn out to be great at the MLB level is shorter than the list of those who don't even make it to the MLB level.  While about 70% of first round picks eventually make it it the bigs, how many turn out to be stars?  Colson is more likely a case of not being as good as the Sox thought he was when drafted vs. him being ruined by the Sox.  Plus, his back issues didn't help.

The Sox don't have a great track record of first round picks, especially for position players.  Colson is probably just a bust.  I could, however, see him up with the Sox after the trade deadline to "see what he's got."

  • Get him squared away, and then send him to Birmingham. They have 2+ years before they really have decisions to make. Drop him back a notch, and let him get comfortable with the changes.

I think it has to do with the back personally. Most of the scouts loved him until he started having issues, and it seems to have really curtailed his performance. When his back was acting up this spring, the Sox gave the "its no big deal" response. I'm sorry, 22 or 23 years old with recurring back problems is a huge issue.

Yup. I wonder if some of the swing changes they made with him were to reduce the stress on his back, too.

Or the back injury caused him to make swing changes to reduce pain.

Or if his back is bugging him again.

He has been getting a number of days off recently, even beyond the HBP injury.

Yeah, I'm not counting on this guy at all, but I'll root like hell for him.

Wouldn't  it be something if they brought up Colson Montgomery (who hasn't hit) to the majors  and kept Baldwin and Elko  in the minors. (Both have hit in the minors)

Colson and Elko had good games last night, Baldwin was 1-4 with 2 RBI as Charlotte won.

Last 7 games for Montgomery....

27 AB's     3  Hits   0 HR   2 RBI   12 K's   2 BB

Maybe I spoke too soon

5 for 9 in last 2 games with 2 home runs

He needs to start consistently hitting

I'm hoping that bad stretch is because he had to keep starting and stopping after getting hit twice, and now he is finding a groove again.

Make me think of Joe Crede.  back issues often end a career in any sport

Thank you to the posters for declaring him a bust/cooked, the anti-jinx was just what the doctor ordered!

Sample sizes still matter.  He is still OPS’ing under .700.  Same goes for dick-riding guys like Vargas, Slater, and Tauchman.  Those numbers are dropping fast.  And Colson isn’t even doing it in the majors.

both are true in this case. good news bad news sorta thing. but we'll take it even if he's rob deere at like 210/270/430 that's a 3 WAR player assuming he can play an average or so SS.

His OPS is up to .708. I’m not saying that as a counter to the overall point you are making, but he’s not under .700 as of now.

The ACL tune-up games are omitted bc who cares about those, but it's a significant improvement over the absolute train wreck he was in the early going. Hopefully he can sustain the success without HBPs getting in the way.

Annnnnnnnd 2 more homers today. He is on an absolute tear

Probably time to come up soon

In only four games, he raised his OPS from .622 to .741.

You're welcome all. I did my best to reverse mush this and it's been beautiful!

On the road, too.

f*** it, call him up. He’s hot and gives him a chance to reset his stats. Worst case scenario is you option him again.

Agreed.  May as well challenge him.  They should also call up Baldwin as well.

Noda, Capra, Rojas — take your pick of which two scrubs to cut loose.

I'd cut Rojas lose and bring him up for LA. We could use that power in the lineup right now.
