I'm not praising the guy. The White Sox aren't going to have a team of 13 Chris Sale's and 12 Jose Abreu's. A guy like Danks who gives the team a chance to win with a decent enough game has a role, I'm not enthusiastically awaiting his starts but I'm also not just burying the guy. It can get worse, people. It can get so much worse.

Danks gives the team no chance to win long term none.

If you wanted to get rid of Danks, we should have traded him to the Angels for Josh Hamilton and gobs of money.

Seems Texas might be the ONLY place where Hamilton has the support system in place to succeed...not sure a city like Chicago would be the best landing site.

It would be interesting to see between Reinsdorf, Hahn and KW how much, if any, interest there was over the off-season.

Probably not very much (obviously) after Melky Cabrera/LaRoche signed....but was it Plan B, C, D or not even a consideration?

Chicago also doesn't have at the same state income tax advantage TEX does...

So does Josh Hamilton (instead of Melky Cabrera) and us paying him let's say $17.5-32.5 million over the next 3 years and DUMPING Danks to the Angels (who don't really need him, they already had Joe Saunders and suffered with him) and going with Rodon/Johnson/Beck/Penny put us in a better position?

Not so sure. MAYBE. But it's not the type of risk JR will typically take on. (Of course, so was Melky with his PEDs history).

If they used that "new money" created by the savings to add one more veteran starter (and didn't sign Bonifacio) just to get us through this season, probably.

McCarthy out for season now. Between him, Ryu and Anderson's consistent dl record, maybe they could use a Danks at some point.

The Dodgers have a comp pick (#35 overall) and it is valued at $1,756,100.

I'm not sure we have the depth to give up Danks. People are already calling for Noesi's head. Danks might be the best out of the Danks/Noesi/Rodon trio...at least this year.

No way Hahn has to give him away if needs him. Price might be steeper than many of you are suggesting.

They could always trade John Danks for Homer Bailey.

The White Sox would assume Bailey's $81 remaining from 2016-2019 (Reds would pay 2020 buyout of $5 million or White Sox would pay $25 million for that season).

In return, the Reds would take on Danks' contract through 2016 (essentially $26 million).

The White Sox would be taking on $55 million in extra salary, paying Bailey roughly $20 million per season.

So you could look at it as paying Bailey $13.75 million per year for four years....or they could use that $26 million in "new/created" money by dumping Danks to improve the club in 2015/16 cycle.

(Of course the problem is that would make keeping Samardzija impossible....but that's probably true regardless.)

1. Sale

2. Quintana

3. Rodon

4. Noesi/Sox prospect OR use the Danks money for a veteran placeholder along the lines of a Haren/Vogelsong/Volquez/Liriano

5. Homer Bailey

Then you'd still have this year's first rounder (likely another pitcher if not Happ or Tucker), Erik Johnson, Montas and Danish for starting pitching depth (not to mention the 2016 compensation pick...or they could end up trading Samardzija for another pitcher/catcher/3B/SS/OF).

It's also POSSIBLE Montas and Danish are ready to start for the Sox in 2016...but I wouldn't necessarily count on that happening, either. Plus breaking in another rookie to go along with Rodon in his first full year and Bailey coming off surgery would necessitate adding one more starting pitcher.

Finally, it's also another possibility Hector Noesi is still a part of the starting rotation in 2016, but I'm not counting on that, either.

Wasn't McCarthy hurt before? I feel sorry for the guy. His career has to be over, right?

McCarthy endured an injury-plagued season in his first year for the Rangers (and his first full year as a starter) in 2007, most notably dealing with a stress fracture in his right shoulder blade that kept him sidelined for nearly 2 months.

In 2008, as he developed inflammation in his right elbow during spring training. He began rehabbing between July & August and finished the season making 5 starts for the Rangers. After opening the 2009 season in the rotation, McCarthy went on to pitch 17 starts in a row before undergoing surgery in July.[4] He missed the remainder of the season. He missed the whole 2010 season recovering from the surgery on his right shoulder, though he did make 11 rehab starts in the minor leagues, going 4-2.[2

On September 5, 2012, he took a line drive to the head off the bat of Erick Aybar of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. McCarthy subsequently underwent surgery for 2 hours to relieve cranial pressure after CT scans revealed he had suffered an epidural hemorrhage, a brain contusion, and a skull fracture.

In June, 2013 while on the disabled list for continued shoulder problems, McCarthy experienced a seizure related to his head injury the previous year. He was placed on medication and expected to return to pitch as his shoulder allowed.

He'll be fine, with everything else he's gone through. Back in 2016 around May or June.
