Damnit, Ron. This isn't how it works. You're suppossed to talk about how awful and terrible he is so he performs like a star. You know, like you did/do with Abreu.3 points

lol buddy I've been compromising my values by voting D in every election since I was of voting age. I'll be the first to argue that voting is a utilitarian exercise in harm reduction rather than an opportunity to pat yourself on the back for staying pure and clean with a 'principled' vote who brought us to this point? who failed spectacularly at every level for a long period of time? who got outplayed by the GOP over and over and over again? who has had an economic platform that's helped to perpetuate our large and growing economic gaps, entrenching wealth and power in the hands of a few? who had no response to an increasingly unhinged GOP throughout the Bush years, culminating in Trump, the logical end-game of decades of GOP politics, not a bastardization? why should the establishment be trusted? why are they the safer option in the wake of their catastrophic failures in 2016? where have they shown that they've changed and learned? what, exactly, is inspiring and trust-building so far in Schumer's leadership? e: until you stop ranting about "Bering and his followers" and actually engage in what others are saying, which is broader and goes back farther than Sanders, I think I'm done with this convo.3 points

The thing that is so maddening about Giolito is it seems like every start is the first time he's ever been in his human body.2 points

What did Clinton do in the 90's? What about Obama's "Grand Bargain" proposal during his turn? I voted for Clinton in the general. I'll vote for Lipinski this fall as well, despite him being the worst Dem in the House and having to be dragged even mildly left from his anti-abortion, gay-hating, anti-health care stances of old by a legitimate progressive challenger this year. What if I want better than what establishment Dems have offered on abortion, environmental protections, climate change, and especially health care? Why is it always up to the progressives to compromise their views and stances in service of the centrists?2 points

The smartest thing would be to play Tim Anderson at catcher. If he sucks they can just draft Bart or if he's gone the next best catcher available and have him or her take Tim's place. The draft is the 4th through the 6th of June so that gives Tim a nice 2 week window to prove himself.2 points

This means he's not eligible for our playoff roster, correct?2 points

You're wrong. If you can get an Eloy like prospect or a package like the Nats gave up for Eaton, you do it. If he wants to be here for the competitive run, he can be resigned in 2020. I like Abreu, but stacking the deck as much as possible for 2020-2023 has to be the organizational priority right now.1 point

Bernie by his own choice isnt part of the Democratic party so hard to stab him in the back.1 point

That isn't mutually exclusive though, and Dems can get the message across to both suburbanites and rural blue collar people. They have forgotten how to campaign. When you go to urban areas, you talk about how your policies appeal to urban people, and when you go to rural areas, you talk about the things that benefit those people there. The huge issue is people who might vote Dem but are bigots. Those people are hard to win over and will lean GOP more often than not. I laugh at this, because you hear from GOP supporters all of the time that they don't play identity politics but they do. Their identity politics is I'm white and the riff raff is taking over the country. I don't want any riff raff! Also, there is a special place in hell for Libertarians. We should give them the area between San Bernadino, CA and Phoenix, AZ and bordered on the south by Mexico and the north by Lake Mead as their own little country and let them go play Hunger Games there. I'm sure they'll tell us how wonderful their independent state is and how everything works so perfectly and it is a utopia. FREE MARKET FTW!!!!1 point

Who cares what garbage candidate Republicans will go for? Stop chasing their votes! Get all your Democrats voting, and go after the people who are currently non-voters. That's another source of frustration among the left with the Democratic leadership.1 point

Right now, I'm too busy trying to punt Roskam from IL-06. He won't meet his constituents and uses the Scalise shooting as an excuse. He won't hold a town hall with his constituents because he claims he fears for his life. I don't get to tell him that I fear for mine because police don't have the proper training to deal with Autistic people. BTW, Reddy, as an autistic white male, there is overlap on 80-90% of issues minorities face, including the following: Not being paid a fair wage or being given an opportunity to prove myself at a full time position(AKA workplace discrimination) having to decide practically whether to work or give up my government benefits and fearing for my life in an encounter with law enforcement, as well as not having most people, even people who care about me, understand what it is like to have a disability. I have been disenfranchised too, and I understand the struggle. I could go on. I unilaterally support movements that seek the civil rights of diverse groups, and hope that as more minority groups that have a larger percentage of the population win their civil rights, I will then have the platform to win mine. I have personally spoken with the Democratic nominee for Kane County Sheriff on a training program to help police officers better understand how to deal with an autistic person they may encounter when on the job, so I'm hoping to somewhat help that issue here in Kane county.1 point

We have to start in reality. The system is not likely to dramatically change soon. You are most likely going to have 2 options when youre time to vote comes. The second part is, most candidates are going to be beholden to someone. The real players give money to both sides. Lets look at Sanders: https://www.opensecrets.org/pres16/contributors?id=N00000528 Every candidate who gets to that level is going to have corporate masters.1 point

How do you propose to control candidates in other states? You act like its simple to just tell everyone to vote like robots. You also seem to be forgetting the rules of the game that is being played. Even if every Democrat voted no, the bill still would have passed. Look at the states where the "Yes" votes are from, places like ND, MO, IN, AL. These are not exactly Democrat strongholds, so they also have to play the game to try and keep their seats. I get that you want something more, but sometimes you have to be pragmatic.1 point

Most pitchers wouldn't be upset their BB/IP was similar to their ERA. Not true for Lucas1 point

If we were to be offered a guy like David Dahl, we would be insane to pass that up. I think that could be about the top end of what we get with maybe little else involved. And I'd be fine with that. Even that may be too much1 point

Good thing pitchers do not bat in the AL then, if Verlander came up to bat he would likely go Juan Marichal on Anderson behind the plate.1 point

Randy Johnson was called up when he was 24 years old. Pedro was used mostly as a reliever initially. Kopech is averaging 5 innings a start. That would most likely go down if promoted. I would think at the very least, you would have to be pretty sure he can average 5 innings a start before a promotion or you will be killing the rest of the staff, just so you can show off the new toy to play with.1 point
-
How about Randy Johnson another hard thrower. He had 6.5 BB/9 in 91 games in the minors. Once he got to the MLB he lowered it to 3.3 over time. Or pedro martinez who had 3.7 BB/9 in the minors for 71 games and an MLB of 2.4. My point being that in this style of pitcher it usnt uncommon to have a higher walk rate yet they can be successful and they may not wait until he is the total finished product to promote him, if they feel he is ready. Especially if his only weakness seems to be a high walk rate.1 point

The Cubs called up Soler and Baez in 2014. They called up Bryant, Russell, and Schwarber in 2015 and started competing. That’s five of their major prospects with several (Almora, Torres, Jimenez, Contreras, etc) still in the minors. Moncada, Lopez, and Giolito are already up. Jimenez and Kopech will be up in 2019 at the latest. That’s five of their major prospects with several still in the minors. Not sure why you’re projecting the Sox will need four years after their first main core is called up to compete—that really has no precedent. This doesn’t even count Anderson as a “major prospect,” or account for the fact that Collins and other prospects may be called up in ‘19 as well. That’s a lot of the core talent. You shouldn’t need to fill the entire roster with 40 hot prospects within a 6-month window to get your rebuild going.1 point

Why would we pay him $40 million the next two years ($80 total) when we’re probably not going to be able to win the division until 2021...?1 point

Hell no - let every player do it and it will improve the game. Like the 90s.1 point

I don't mean this sarcastically- does this affect his recruitment of Machado at all? Would we cut him, paying all of his 2019 guaranteed salary, before the season?1 point

And this was against a line up that featured Caleb Jospeh batting clean up. He set a major league record in 2016 when he had 141 plate appearances and didn’t have any runs batted in. That is the most plate appearances while getting shutout of a RBI in history.1 point

You will never be as cool as Yolmer Sanchez, it's really as simple as that. Dude is the embodiment of what baseball is meant to be in basically every way.1 point

If the Sox had more Yolmers between 2009-2016, they would have made the playoffs at least once. Unless you trust the front office to have suddenly learned how to develop more guys like him, you keep him.1 point

I think everyone understands the concept, they just don’t buy it will work. In the past, it has worked 1 out of 3 when the extended Freddy Garcia. It was a bit different because he was really tight with Ozzie and he didn’t become a free agent, and signed a slight discount. Samardjiza, Bartolo Colon are 2 guys who didn’t seem to find it a place they couldn’t leave, plus it would have cost good prospects. Right now Russell and Schwarber is what I hear it is going to cost, so they would have had to beat that. I personally think the whole point was he was going to like losing so much in the frigid empty GRF, that they would convince him to take a discount. It wasn’t going to happen. If they offer him the most money this winter, I like their chances. I don’t think they have a chance if they don’t. And I don’t think they would have had a chance if they traded for him during the winter and didn’t offer the most cash.1 point

Dont agree with the more pure form of basketball than college. What makes college basketball so great is that you actually see different types of offenses/defenses being run. NBA is dominated by on ball screens, pick & roll and iso. Sure you will see some teams run off the ball screens, but you dont see one time running swing offense while the other team runs motion. NBA is dominated by stars, most teams design their offense around the star dominating the ball or shots in some way. College is more of a team sport, which I really think is the more pure form. Im also confused by the "actually play defense" as if you look at Kenpom adjusted defense many of the top teams are defensive powerhouses https://kenpom.com/ In comparison, NBA teams today arent really that good historically defensively : https://nbamath.com/adjusted-team-ratings/ Only the Spurs in 2016 come in the top 15.1 point

I still think there's a #2/3 starter in there somewhere. Everyone compares him to Floyd. Floyd had lost considerable velocity when he was traded here(was throwing 89-91 and maxing at 93 vs 94-96 as a top prospect, similar to Giolito) and eventually after being able to finally repeat his mechanics was able to get it back. Floyd struggled during his first stint with the big club, and made great strides his second year with the Sox, even at lower velocity. I think the same will eventually happen with Giolito. We probably won't see the best of Giolito until the 2nd half of 2019 or 1st half of 2020. I'm willing to be patient, because Coop has a track record with Floyd.1 point
