Really? You know the dodgers, red sox, and Rays all tried to acquire Kimbrel. The Rays Reportedly offered Tyler Glasnow for him. So no, we couldn't just have got him for Heuer, or a bag of balls, The trade didn't work out, but come on Kimbrel was the best reliever in baseball at the time. Why must we continually beat the dead horse on this trade?4 points

Or it shows how little (pun intended) other organizations valued Nick Madrigal and this was the best trade they could make.2 points

Hahn : "Jed, is it possible you could part with Craig Kimbrel? We'll offer you a bounty, Codi Heuer plus" Hoyer, on mute, howling at his fellow coworkers: "These miserable sacks of shit! Oh my god, tell them we need madrigal so they don't get embarrassed" Hoyer, composing himself, turns off mute: "Yeah uh, Hahn we're gonna need a Madrigal or that type" mutes again Office breaks up laughing, its pandemonium. People clutching their stomachs in pain from the stitches of laughter.2 points

@bmags used the term fanfic for the Machado negotiations, but my god the fanfics for Hahn trades is nauseating. How half this board thinks the trade went down:2 points

You can't please some people as you well know. Madrigal will probably be a star for the Cubs and the same critics will be calling for Rick Hahn's head. If Kimbrel goes on to be his old self next year for some other team...RH will be portrayed as dumb as a box of rocks.2 points

The White Sox are in the playoffs back to back years, in a measure thanks to this trade, and you still don't know.2 points

Let’s get through another full season before confirming that as a universal phenomenon…most teams still don’t follow the Rays’ path, and they have suffered a number of very high profile pitching injuries as well. Glasnow, McKay, Honeywell, etc.1 point

If you asked me this question before picking up Kimbrel's option I'd have said no. The $6 million or so in arbitration that he'd be paid in 2022 while on the IL is money the White Sox really can't afford, and although he'd be useful and cheaper in 2023, there's not a lot of upside in only 1 year of him for $12 million+. Plus, there's a risk that the next CBA could change the rules for how long you have control of guys, so there's a nonzero chance he could never throw a pitch for the team acquiring him. Glasnow is right on the edge of a non-tender candidate, especially for the Rays. Right now? Sure, getting "anything" back for Kimbrel now that his option is picked up is fine.1 point

He's done this for a long time now though. He's a win-now player and does not like dealing with young players not knowing what to do. Obviously he's not alone there, Butler and Wade big-timed young bulls roster and Butler did same in MN. But in Miami, where the org does such a good job controlling culture and getting young guys to understand what's expected - it doesn't come up. But Lebron basically runs the orgs he's in where the energy is keeping Lebron happy, who likes to win and wants everyone to be 100% dedicated to winning but at the same time needs to take time off to ensure he can still go in playoffs - it's difficult to hold both of those. He's the biggest person in any org he's in, except when he was in the org of Pat Riley. I hated Riley as a kid, but holy cow do I respect what he's built in Miami. And how he groomed Spoelstra to takeover to, and supported him. How he rebuilt Miami without ever tanking, how he's kept the org modern in fitness and player dev. Truly amazing stuff to be that good for that long.1 point

Boy does it make me feel old that we're now OK Boomering Lebron James ? Totally agree, though. The Lakers roster is such a weird 2011 all-star team.1 point

Tyler Glasnow, who has never started more than 14 games in a season, who has never been worth more than 2.3 rWAR in a season, who is out for all of 2022 after Tommy John Surgery, who will have a total of 1 year before free agency to actually pitch, while coming off TJS where he probably won’t be fully effective? Man the Rays didn’t think very much of Kimbrel if that was their actual offer.1 point

Every time I hear Kimbrel's name, I shudder. I would love to have been a fly on Hahn's wall when he was discussing the trade last summer. Here we had an expensive Cub relief pitcher who they obviously did not want or need, and Hahn walked into the void. You would think that Heuer alone would have been more than enough, because Heuer was, in fact, struggling at the time. But no. Hahn wanted to give more, so Madrigal's name got thrown in there. I still wonder if Hahn wanted to give up yet more to the Cubs, but they felt sorry for him and said no, that's enough.1 point

The % used to make the point is inaccurate. More like 50%. It takes both sides to make this mess.1 point

The 25 man roster in both leagues was set in 1914. https://www.baseball-almanac.com/articles/baseball_rosters.shtml it became part of the CBA in 1968 (per wiki). The roster was limited to 24 from 86-89 due “escalating player salaries.” It moved back to 25 until the recent increase to 26.1 point

More than anything the benefit of the trade was a clarity of direction that the org could get behind. It's maybe surprising that Yoan is still putting it all together, but that's why you bet on talent like that. He has become very good defensively. His OBP has given him a high floor. And if he can once again pair the high OBP with 25 HRs, then you have an MVP candidate.1 point

Is it $30 million in addition to Craig Kimbrel because that's doable for sure I'd think. Maybe something like this: Trade Craig Kimbrel and Matt Foster to Philadelphia for Jean Segura, Jose Alvarado and Rafael Marchan Trade Gavin Sheets and Zack Collins to Oakland for Sean Manaea and upside reliever of some sort? Sign OF Michael Conforto to 4 year $88 million deal. Backload the deal. Re-Sign Ryan Tepera for 2 years $14 million 1. Tim Anderson SS 2. Yoan Moncada 3B 3. Luis Robert CF 4. Yasmani Grandal C 5. Jose Abreu 1B 6. Eloy Jimenez LF 7. Michael Conforto RF 8. Andrew Vaughn DH 9. Jean Segura 2B Bench C Rafael Marchan INF/OF Leury Garcia OF Adam Engel LHB Bench bat of some sort Rotation 1. Lance Lynn 2. Lucas Giolito 3. Dylan Cease 4. Sean Maneae 5. See, sometimes spreading the same amount of $ across a few players is better than breaking the bank on someone like Semien. Not a guarantee either way, but different ways to attack things.1 point

Everyone needs to chill. We have a great team as is. I truly believe there will be great deals to be have in the $5-10mil a year range. They might not be the headline deals but can end up yielding better results.1 point

Gloom and doom and let’s get desperate is what I read here. The Sox haven’t misread the market and I don’t think paying salary amounts that these guys were signed for would be a wise move for the team1 point
