I will be honest, it might have gotten him in the door at the beginning, but it is no where near why he is one of the best in the business. I can't think of another person in sportscasting who has the versatility that he does. He sits down in three different sports and sounds like he does any particular one of them all of the time. He's sits down with different partners and sounds like he has been on the air with whoever it is, forever. He has a light touch, and is perfectly willing to get his partner engaged as much as possible. Dude is one of the best in the business.13 points

What? You don’t think the great Schriffdawg will ever be the voice of Sunday Night Baseball on NBC?4 points

I'm pretty lenient on this team but letting him go was worse than losing the most games in baseball history.4 points

I think a factor that should be considered is that high school kids would follow suit. The kids on my baseball team certainly were 20ish years ago and several of them developed drug additions as adults. It makes sense when considering that a trusted adult is encouraging you to inject drugs when you’re 14. It’s not worth it for a couple extra homers or whatever.3 points

We've been robbed of Schriff yelling "[home city] staaaaaAAAAAAAND UP!" becoming a beloved, shared experience across baseball.2 points

I will leave on an NCAA basketball game with two teams I have zero interest in, just because he is calling it.2 points

But he's never growled upon seeing a great play. In all seriousness, though, you're absolutely right. I watched a few NFL games with him calling the play-by-play, and he sounds like a natural. He's just really freaking good at his job.2 points

Oddly enough, here's a nice explanation as to why a team WAR range may sit 19-23 while all being 67 win teams or why, possibly, a 22 WAR team might be projected to win fewer games than a team with 20 projected WAR. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/hey-fangraphs-your-math-isnt-mathing-or-is-it/2 points

I don’t think mid season transformations for minor league pitchers are all that rare. Mechanical & repertoire changes can suddenly click for a young arm and immediately unlock better results. Guys can change their hitter strategies (i.e attack the zone more) or their pitch sequencing and get better results. These guys are literally developing in real time and should get better as the season progress. IMO, using full season production to project go forward expectations is way too simplistic.1 point

You know Schriffen has fantasy dreams just like this, and is all pissed off when he wakes up from them.1 point

I’m not sure how your follow-up question even relates to the Simpsons gif Tony posted or why you are specifically calling him out. This is from Jason Benetti’s Wikipedia page: While I’m sure Benetti would rather not have to live his life with cerebral palsy, it sure hasn’t stopped him from being more successful than many people without a disability. Schriffen has no disabilities that I am aware of and he’s still a worse baseball announcer than Benetti.1 point

I'm expecting less than 70 wins but last year was obviously an improvement and the talent on roster should only increase over next couple years, so I'd say things are looking up at the least1 point

It is amazing how often Tom Tango's work comes up still in 2026. They are still using a variation of his original "Base Runs" formula.1 point

BA has a nice piece today on Roch/Lebron, as well as super-hot Will Gasparino. There's also a bunch of solid info on other hot college hitters. Only sharing the Roch/Lebron/Gasparino stuff. https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/mlb-draft-buzz-roch-cholowsky-vs-justin-lebron-will-gasparinos-hot-start-18-more-prospects-to-know/1 point

As I said you can make a case for concussions. One thing we do know is that taking PEDs exacerbates the incidence of CTE. In fact some research shows that drug abuse can cause CTE without the head trauma due to its effect on brain chemistry. The incidence if concussions is about 7 in 10,000 in soccer and about 10 in 10,000 in football. Even fewer develop CTE on average based on post mortem research. I agree its a significant problem but its not really that common of an issue. With new equipment and rule changes we have seen about a 20% decrease in concussion even with more detailed and consistent reporting.1 point

Which they dont really care about at this point of ST . I think that was the point you were making. The main guys will eventually pitch in their assigned roles this spring. Right now its a hodge podge. While we often cite the improvement in close games as a key component to improving lets not lose track that we're talking about the regular season .1 point

The only way you dump Benny is if you take on another bad contract in return. If he was a free agent, what kind of deal would he get? Looking at his offensive numbers and adding to it he is borderline unplayable in LF for a team with aspirations, would he even get a true major league deal? Dude is a replacement play who can't play defense. He doesn't hit enough to hide at DH or 1B. Cut him and move on. He's a waste of space for the White Sox.1 point

Fully agree with all of this. Chase needs to live up to his AAA hype and fast or could be relegated to reserve infielder status once Antonacci is ready. That being said, Chase was dealing with several injuries last year and it certainly impacted his performance as the season progressed. I expect improvement in terms of both impacting the ball and getting on base next year. His BB rate has significant room for growth and that getting closer to 12% is what will make or break him.1 point

Another hot take. Benetti is fine, but he wouldn't be as revered and acclaimed if he didn't have a disability.0 points
